The Obamas Attend Sunday Church Service in D.C.
January 18, 2009 2:11 PM
ABC News' Jake Tapper and Sunlen Miller report:
The Obama family made the first step in finding a new church home in Washington, DC -– attending a Sunday church service at 19th Street Baptist Church in Northwest this morning –- one of the oldest and most historic African-American churches in the district.
Mr. and Mrs. Obama, their daughters, and Michelle's mother, Marian Robinson, received a standing ovation as they walked into the sanctuary as the choir sang.
A female associate pastor led a prayer which she ended –- appropriately using a campaign slogan from Mr. Obama –- “Yes we can, in the name of Jesus we pray, Amen."
During the service the president-elect sang along to well-known hymns such as “Blessed Assurance.” At one point the congregation burst into applause when, concluding a reading by the children's choir, a little boy stepped to the microphone and said, "Free at last, free at last, thank God almighty we are free at last."
Obama met with the pastor, Dr. Derrick Harkins, his wife, Juli Harkins, and the Harkins' two children, before coming into the sanctuary.
The Obamas quit their longtime church -– Trinity United Church of Christ in the South Side of Chicago –- in May 2008 amid controversial surrounding their pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Weight, and his incendiary remarks from the pulpit. Since then the Obamas have not been regulars at church. Aides say the Obamas practice Bible study at home.
While campaigning in late August, Mr. Obama attended church in Lima, but today marks the future first family’s first step in Washington to finding a permanent place to worship.
“The Obamas are honored to worship this Sunday at 19th Street and look forward to learning more about many churches in the District,” Obama’s director of religious affairs, Joshua DuBois said. “They will choose a church home at a time that is best for their family.”
In an interview this month with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, Obama said that he and his wife will be visiting some churches to see what’s comfortable –- not just for them but for the church’s congregants.
“It is tougher as president,” Obama said. “You know, this is not just an issue of going to church, it’s an issue of going anywhere. You don’t want to subject your fellow church members, the rest of the congregation, to being magged every time you go to church. And so, we’re going to try to be balancing, not being disruptive to the city, but also saying we want to be part of Washington D.C."

To those who felt Rev. Jeremiah Wright was a comedian, please remember that he was speaking the truth in so many dimensions that was way above the head of the press and most Americans. Rev. Wright was a prophet whose words resonate now in the aftermath of the economic collapse in the U.S. When the rich and unrighteous prey on the poor and helpless, God will avenge the greedy whoremongers in the end. Whether atheists like it or not, there is a God and he will not be mocked. And if you don't believe what I say, then you're toast because where you're going to spend an eternity is one hot hell hole. So, instead of spewing such ignorant judgmental criticisms at your next president, be grateful that the one national treasure in this country, the Christian community, will be praying that President Obama will keep God in his life because he probably knows that with God on his side, he has no one (bigots, anti-Obamites, cynics, et al)to fear. Peace and Love

This must be a difficult decision. Choosing a church that feels right for your family is difficult enough, but add on the invasion of privacy for the congregation, as well as the distraction of secret service agents and it becomes more problematic.

Afrocentrism and Black Liberation Theology is racists. Its bizarre that people feel the need to censors that fact.

I wish people worried as much about their own actions and faith (or not) than they do about others. Some just show how dumb they themselves are, from their public comments. One can tell, just from a few comments, which way the commenter voted. Lets not tear down our future president, before he even takes office. Those that dont believe in God, or any religion, that is your choice. Do not try to tear down those that do. They just might be right, and then where are you when your end comes?

The church Obama attended in Chicago was not a racist church. That was the branding the 'right wing' gave it in an attempt to smear Obama. Quit spouting catch phrases and nonsense.

Will Barry choose another racist, anti-American church to spend the next 20 years in? Probably not. He has too much attention on him now. The man is phony and will hopefully be exposed for what he is very soon....anti-American, socialist, anti-Israel, and racist.

Mark- No, he's not for abortion rights in all nine months. During his campaigning, he spoke out against late term abortions, saying that the mother's mental health shouldn't be used as a justification for termination. Some women and women's groups didn't appreciate his equivocation.

Obama is Pro-Choice.
Has voted to support abortion rights in all 9 months of pregnancy.

Why did Obama choose a black church? If he is half white and supposedly for all Americans, why is he perpetuating the black/white segregation we spent so many years getting rid off?

The Obamas are an African-American family. It was an historic African-American church. Seems fitting to me. Besides, it's not necessarily the final choice.
"The Obamas are honored to worship this Sunday at 19th Street and look forward to learning more about many churches in the District,” Obama’s director of religious affairs, Joshua DuBois said. “They will choose a church home at a time that is best for their family.”

there are some truly ignorant people out there. At first they didn't like his PASTOR at a Baptist church in Chicago, then they think he is a Muslim. You can't have it both ways. Like Colin Powell said, the real answer is "so what". You gonna crucify all highschool students for the acts of those two nuts at columbine? or Oklahoma City? I hope the answer is no. Hmm, lets see, a man who went to two prestigious universities, who has a true understanding of the U.S. Constitution, yea we sure don't want a guy like that in there (sarcastic for those dimwits out there). After three tours in Iraq, finally someone who knows which war we ought to fight.

The Obamas have a right to attend church if that is thier choice. After all isn't that a constitutional right. He and his wife are raising a family and there is nothing wrong in providing a church environment for them.

I don't know which group of respondents to this article scares me the most A) The angry Christian fundamentalists or B)the angry atheists who claim that they are right and everyone else is wrong. Please save us from both!

Hillary Clinton is very devout; I dare say, much more genuinely than our President Elect. He goes for show.
