A Sarcastic John McCain Tweets Top 10 Porkiest Projects

February 27, 2009 6:18 PM

"Tmr I am gonna tweet the TOP TEN PORKIEST PROJECTS in the Omnibus Spending bill the Congress is about to pass," Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., wrote on his Twitter page yesterday.

And today he did.

They are:

"#10. $1.7M "for a honey bee factory" in Weslaco, TX

"#9. $475,000 to build a parking garage in Provo City, Utah

"#8. $200,000 "tattoo removal violence outreach program to could help gang members or others shed visible signs of their past" REALLY?

"#7. $300,000 for the Montana World Trade Center - enough said

"#6. $1 million for mormon cricket control in Utah - is that the species of cricket or a game played by the brits?

"#5. $650,000 for beaver management in North Carolina and Mississippi"

McCain had tweeted a question about how one manages a beaver, but he deleted it after the comment provoked a twizzard.

"#4. $2.1 million for the Center for Grape Genetics in New York - quick peel me a grape.

"#3. $332,000 for the design and construction of a school sidewalk in Franklin, Texas - not enough $ for schools in the stimulus?

"#2. $2 million 'for the promotion of astronomy' in Hawaii - because nothing says new jobs for average Americans like investing in astronomy"

And 30 minutes ago, Mr. McCain finally offered the big payoff:

"#1. $1.7 million for pig odor research in Iowa"

Fruit flies are one of the most common species used for genetic research, including research to cure autism. Saying that money is being "wasted" on "fruit fly research" is like saying money that we spent to build Humvee armor was wasted on "steel refinement".

Read some damn science before you criticize these projects.

Please realize the total costs of all these projects is less than one tenth the wealth of the rich twit who's twittering.

Several of these projects have the potential to save several times their cost. Pennywise, pound foolish.

Mr. Obama won't veto it because he loves the idea of more taxpayer money being spent on ridiculous nonsense. He thinks it will stimulate the economy. His failure to take action at a time when the country is bankrupt shows just how little Washington politicians think of taxpayer money. To them it is something to be played with, just like monopoly money. They absolutely no concern for the taxpayer and the money we give Washington to run this country. Both parties for decades have spent our money on garbage that really did not need to be spend by Washington. If the local people really needed it, they would find some way to pay for these pork projects. Why should someone in Iowa pay for some fruit fly research in New Jersey? Washington is out of touch with the citizens. But we deserve what we get.We keep re electing the same people expecting them to change their ways. That is like expecting a fireman trying to put out a fire with a squirt gun and failing every time. Yet, when he goes to his next fire, he does it again. Why are we so stupid to expect anything better than what we keep sending to the corrupt halls of Washington. God help us.

Have all of these politicians forgotten who they work for? Who pays the check, Who works our buts off? I can't believe what is happening. Put your personal ideas and personal goals aside and do what is right for this country and the tax payers who have kept all of you in a job.

You People are making a Hurricane out of a out of a [[Very Light Rain Cloud]]

--------------------

Billions in Earmarks contained in the $410 Billion Omnibus spending bill -- and campaign pledges to "Slash Earmarks by more than Half" -- the President would sign the bill.

----------
Taxpayers for Common Sense says the Bill contains [[8,570]] Earmarks at a Cost of [[$7.7 Billion]].

An estimated 60% of the Earmarks are from [[Democrats]], while [[Republicans]] requested the remaining 40%.
----------------------

Note: Wow Such Wasteful Earmark Spending...

Out of 410 Billion Dollars...

Only 7.7 Billion Dollars of Wasteful Earmarks...

Oh The Shame!!

Please...

You People act as if, Earmarks are 70% of the Omnibus Package...

I'm Not Impressed at all or Shocked at all.

From the Reaction
----
I was Expecting the Omnibus to be at Least 25-30% laden with Earmarks !!

7.7 Billion from a 410 Billion Dollar Package..Please

Such wasteful spending , How can the government get away with this? Don't forget to join the santelli tea party.

Actually, I was being inaccurate about hundreds; it's 8,750 earmarks and they're from last year. So it's all the more amazing that 5 out of 10 on McCain's Twitter list were identical to an earlier ABC report, down to the exactly misworded, "honey bee factory."

It is not surprise to me that those questioning the budget and supporting the McCain Tweetmobile are expecting things to be put to right in just over a month. Really folks, it took 8 years (count them) to get in this mess. A little research such that put forth by Willem van Oranje reminds us that there is sometime more to an issue that appears on the surface. I personally would feel a little foolish if I were McCain. Doesn't he do his homework before he votes? Evidently not.

Kat the Real One, thanks for the info further identifying the honeybee lab in question. That simply proves my point. The earmark provides money for salaries and expenses at the lab. Folks around here are acting as if there would not be honeybee research if not for this earmark. That's simply not true. As you say, the lab has been in existence and doing research for a long while. All its funding in the past has not come from earmarks, but through regular channels. If more is necessary, they can obtain it through regular means. Using an earmark is not appropriate.
**************************************************
No, the folks around here were not acting as if there would be no research if not for the earmark. The argument being made clearly had to do with the Weslaco research center, deliberately misstated as a honey bee farm, having scientific and research merits. The thread of argument was obviously about how programs on the list with merit are dismissed and marginalized, not on earmarks per se-- something which certainly weren't absent from the Bush administration, any more than wasteful spending was.

It's also worth noting again hat the list bears an uncanny resemblance to the one from Feb. 23 in an earlier report on the ABC website. It's not coincidental that 5 out of 10 of the earmarks on the McCain list were found on the previous report, with the Weslaco lab being tagged as a "honey bee farm," which it clearly isn't. That's an especially high ratio when you consider that there were hundreds of earmaks on the Omnibus bill.

he media is a JOKE, I mean isnt it disgusting, how quickly Obamas racist church, terrorist friends, 830K to ACORN, sealed birth certificate, TAX FRAUD for Treasury Secretary, and his broken pledges of transparency, and open government all seem to go unchallenged after one stinking news cycle.

This resident of our country is pushing nothing but snake oil, while president Pelosi (clueless as they come), and vice president Reid (complete utter moron) are raping, and robbing america blind.

They are screwing up this country to the point of no return, and they are doing it on purpose. Can you say "one world socialist goverment?

Gotta point the finger somewhere
How about point the finger at a party that is severely inept and drastically out of touch with America. I don't need the media and obviously neither does the majority of Americans to see how dismal the GOP is and how we needed a CLEAN break from the decades of a do-nothing government.

Barack Obama has came in with unprecedented BOLD determination TO CHANGE AMERICA.

That regurgitated drivel that you mentioned was well documented by all news outlets even your coveted Fixed News. America made a decision that drivel was not going to take our eyes off the true need for this country and we DID SO. It's a shame that you are not one of those people.

Screwing up the country you say????? You must have just awaken from a eight year sleep have you?
Does the name George W. Bush ring a bell? One who is being argued to be the worst president in American history.

So Badger, it is you desire, please continue to fester in yesterday's news or you can get a clue and Join America

The Mack is Baaaa ummm no.

To RR GOP--

Well, you see, the difference between Democratic spending and Republican spending is that the Democrats will tell you during the campaign that they will do it while the Republicans tell you that they won't (and then do it anyway).

No one really cares if the spending is by a Democrat or a Republican, nor if it is for a Democratic district or a Republican one. That isn't the point. The point is that Jeb Hensarling (and all the other Republicans) is DISHONEST about it! Hensarling campaigns against big government spending, he goes on television complaining about big government spending, he votes against the bill... but he has stuffed it with projects that benefit his district!

Do Democrats spend more than you would like? Sure. But at least they told you up-front that they were going to do it. Hensarling and his ilk are lying through their teeth about it. And you keep voting for them! Why will you vote for a Republican who spends and lies to your face about it, but you won't vote for a Democrat who spends and is honest with you about his spending priorities? Really, what is up with that?

Posted by: Demesne Lord | Mar 1, 2009 2:33:35 AM

So, with some of these arguments I'm reading here I take it that the Libs love the current government spending, but hate the Republicans' government spending (which was far less at any rate). Yep, really makes sense. I guess also that the 60% Dem earmarks are all good and the 40% Republican earmarks are all bad?

Kind of like now how the war in Afghanistan is all righteous because The One wants to pour more troops in there? Guess it's like how JFK got us into Vietnam, Johnson increased the number of troops, but Nixon who eventually pulled them out was a 'pig' (according to John Lennon at least) and endured the greatest anti-war demonstrations during his presidency?

Personally, I believe each Congressman should get X dollars for earmarks every fiscal year, and when it's gone, no more. Anything more than that must go through channels and be voted upon by Congress and hopefully be judged to be in the interest of the American people.

The main reason these people exist is to manage America's Federal monies.

For the record, I dare so most of us Republicans/Conservatives were not and are not happy with the way our Republican congressmen have been wasting our money.

I can't see how the Democratic congressmen care about what you Lefties think about this any more than most of the Republican congressman apparently care what we think about it.

Wow. McCain finally learned how to use a computer? Guess his POW injuries weren't so bad after all.

That school sidewalk is an interesting one... Franklin is the county seat of Robertson County... which is in the congressional district of Jeb Hensarling. I wonder if anyone (like, say, a JOURNALIST) has bothered to ask why Nancy Pelosi is packing the stimulus bill with pork for Jeb Hensarling? Maybe some intrepid reporter (say, someone on the Capitol beat) should ask Jeb just how that got in there...
