D'oh! Caterpillar CEO Contradicts President on Whether Stimulus Will Allow Him to Re-Hire Laid Off Workers

February 12, 2009 6:16 PM

EAST PEORIA, ILL. -- President Obama today repeated the claim we asked about yesterday at the press briefing that Jim Owens, the CEO of Caterpillar, Inc., "said that if Congress passes our plan, this company will be able to rehire some of the folks who were just laid off."

Caterpillar announced 22,000 layoffs last month.

But after the president left the event, Owens said the exact opposite.

Asked if the stimulus package would be able to stop the 22,000 layoffs or not, Owens said, "I think realistically no. The truth is we're going to have more layoffs before we start hiring again"

"It is going to take some time before that stimulus bill" means re-hiring, he said.

Owens supports the stimulus plan, but said it would take some time to have an impact on his industry and "is a little light on the heavy construction."

my "fellow" cat employees were constantly telling me that I wouldnt be able to work there as I got "older".
I was 40 at the time. At 46 they got rid of me. I intend to work somewhere but it won't be for another company with no morals or scrupples.

At this point it would be best for Caterpillar to move all of its operations from north carolina back to Illinois. Closing the NC plants will help the company restructure and avoid chapter 11 bankruptcy.

I was laid off by Cat in NC and they were sending my work over to INdia.
I hope they close the NC plants and send the CAT managers and engineers to India also. Maybe send the rest to China.

CAT should be ashamed of their selves. While they are laying off AMERICANS they are moving jobs to India and Brazil. This is NOT RIGHT!!!! They don't want to make all this public but someone should do some investigating. These overseas plants produce shoddy products that break down or are not even made correctly causing their final products to be inferior in quality. All for the sake of making more money for the top dogs. Let's see what their bonuses are for this year???

Some focus should be on looking at exactly what CAT is doing with the jobs they are laying off. Let the American people and President Obama know what Mr. Owens has up his sleeve.

For those of you on this page who say CAT is not doing anything to increase sales in this tough period please do not comment on something you are not aware of. I am in the middle of trying to do just that with CAT. There is a massive plan in place be assured, and it has been deployed, any thousands are out there day and night trying to turn this thing around. It is very unfortunate people are losing their jobs. But, CAT knows its important to capture market in this declining environment.

I was recently laid-off from Caterpillar and don't feel recall is likely. While Cat is a great company to work for, they do reguarly lay-off employees with market fluctuation. And, yes, I would also like to know what executives received in bonuses.

I want my job back.

Caterpillar will not call any employees back to work. They are not doing anything to improve their sales, or business. They are worried about their dividends. When things got rough some of the major stock holders "cashed in". They received huge bonuses for their 2008 profits. Now the small guy has to pay. They not only hurt their employees but also their vendors as well. So many companies invested in Caterpillar through their pensions and lost everything. If all goes the way it should their stocks will be worth pennies. They will be on the pink sheets before the year ends.

I think Caterpillar along with some of these large manufacturing companies need to tell us how much money their bonuses were? Did they refuse them or take them? Maybe they could of saved some of those 20,000 people from getting laid off. Obama is doing more then Bush did.

Hussein,
You could do more good for this recession if you would just tell people to quit being scared and go out and spend money, the recession and slowdown will be over..finished...kaput

I offered the US Federal Govt a Recovery Plan Solution, in the way of new clean energy production...Incidentally, energy underpins the economy of every nation, and not really banks, or the auto industry like many seem to believe. So, you will see the US economy continue to slide, along with world economies no matter how much 'stimulus'occurs.

Do you really believe that 'economists' that totally failed to see a meltdown coming can actually 'fix' a global crisis?? Not likely. Sometimes it takes a fuller catastrophe for reality to dawn on people.

World leaders have lots of hot air, but no hearing, so perhaps that will improve with fuller catastrophe.

NEW Concept- World FIRST: The generation of unlimited , daily, clean electricity into the national power grid, in volumes that with implementation, will outstrip the combined power yields of wind and solar energy - Concept currently UNKNOWN as alternate energy source.

In the light of the energy problems being experienced across the globe, I would like to be afforded an opportunity to present a solution to lacking energy policy, under the framework
of a direct governmental agreement. I respectfully request such an arrangement due to the urgency of the global meltdown, avoiding the normal protocols of patents.

I would appreciate the opportunity to tender the concept, to be verified by any governmental team of engineers, planners, architects and scientists to directly present their verified findings to the relevant senate committee.

If interested in the proposal, I can more clearly outline the potential for massive job creation, financial stimulation and stabilization of the stock markets, and all related industry, and markets and ultimately the methodology that can be applied to achieving better energy security, helping wean economies from high oil dependance.

Consideration of this proposal may lead you to conclude that less can be invested in wind/solar/biofuels, and still have a more positive energy yield. You might also consider the impacts of substantially lowered carbon emissions and the related effects on climate change that can be more directly addressed.

As you see the nations of the globe deteriorate, in spite of every stimulus effort I would urge you to understand that liquidity, in this instance, can fix nothing.

Thank you for any consideration.

Yours Sincerely.

I beleive the Prez expects for the corporations to act in "good-faith" with the stimulus money, but there's a lot of naivety on Obama's behalf. He needs to stay on top of the Giant-Heads and put more accountability in the proposal, to avoid what went wrong with the TARP. Americans need the help more than the CEO's of these companies and their corp heads. There won't be a trickle-down factor, the country is in too dire of needs all-across-the-board.
Obama is trying, but what a "slap in the face" from the BIG CAT BIG-WIG. These companies will NOT do right by their employees, and that is the problems we are facing with these huge bail-out packages. "In good-faith" has long been forgotten by these types, and they only act in greed.

No es No!!! Venezuelan elections today to keep Chavez in forever. This is going to change Venezuela forever. Venezuela will become the next Cuba with economic problems and Poverty.

Politicians are by nature lying corrupt weasels, but this administration is already shaping up to be the mother of all political machines - precisely because they know that whatever this sock puppet of George Soros says, 52% of the country will believe it or turn a deaf ear to it because about the same percentage will be beholden to the feds for a handout or a job. This is ridiculous, people, it's Marion Barry - style cronyism about to be implemented on a national level - the USA as we knew it is truly over.

Under employed whose fault is that? This is the United States, at least for a couple of more months
before it becomes the USSA. If you are underemployed it is your own fault. Get off your butt and do something. If you are waiting for the "stimulus" package to bail you out you will be waiting for a long time. This will not create jobs or demand for goods and services. In order for govenment spending to stimulate the economy for every $1 of stimulus a dollar is taken from one american and given to another. In order for this to "stimulate" the economy the dollar given will have to be spent on something more beneficial to the economy than what the original possessor of the dollar would have, not a very unlikely scenario considering the recipient is from a lower income bracket and is there precisely because of their lack of monetary management abilities. The scenario becomes even less credible when you figure that what ever the recipient purchases must not only be of greater value to the economy, but must also cover the cost of the government redistribution of that dollar. Otherwise there is not a positive stimulus to the economy, and you are just running another failed ponzi scheme, which is what socialism is. Capitalism has not failed, the problem is we have burdened or Capitalistic system with a lot of freeloader baggage. Lazy people who think they deserve a free ride for some reason. We need to return to the mentality that made the country great, it is the pursuit of happiness. Pursuit means work, if our taxpayers and businesses are saddled with confiscatory tax rates there is no incentive to work. The nature of human beings is not to work to support the slackers who will not do for themselves, but to work to better one's station in life. The most sinister type of greed is the greed of those who want part of something they did not earn. Like welfare recipients and the government. Once we Americans learn that the big government and the slackers looking for a free ride are the enemy of economy, just as the founders did, the faster and stronger the economic recovery will be.

Jake,

Finally, someone in the main stream calling to question this president. Thank you. I really miss President Bush.

Posted by: crystalinwi | Feb 14, 2009 9:09:58 AM

Bush was the greatest President ever, and the Dem's are jealous of this fact. Because of the Dem's actions and inactions the mortgage markets collapsed, due to their pro-stance on illegal aliens. Iraq is ready to pump oil and pay for the war, but Dem's don't want their money --they want mine, instead I will not be paying taxes. Now they stick us with a Kenyan President who won't show his birth certificate!

To the Didohead;
Your reasoning to protect Obama is based on blind hate of the right. Just look at what your durning, siding with a man who has been caught in lie after lie. The caterpillar CEO exposed Obama because he is an honest man(CEO) who said "the truth of the matter is" etc. by the way the CEO backs the bill but not the lies. I once was blind, but now I see. Open up you eyes and mind.
