Former Senator Daschle Apologizes to Committee Leaders for Tax Errors
February 02, 2009 6:11 AM
In a letter to the chairman and ranking Republican of the Senate Finance Committee, which holds a closed-door meeting at 5 p.m. today to discuss his tax issues -- first reported in this space and on ABC News on Friday night -- former Sen. Tom Daschle says he is "deeply embarrassed and disappointed by the errors that required me to amend my tax returns. I apologize for the errors and profoundly regret that you have had to devote time to them."
Following is a copy of the letter:
THOMAS A. DASCHLE
February 1, 2009
The Honorable Max Baucus - Chairman
The Honorable Charles Grassley - Ranking Member
Committee on Finance
United States Senate
Washington, DC 20510
Dear Chairman Baucus and Senator Grassley:
Thank you for the work you and the Committee are doing to move forward on my nomination by President Obama to be Secretary of Health and Human Services. I know that despite the heavy workload from both the Economic Recovery Act and SCHIP, as well as all the nominees the Committee is handling, your staff has worked diligently on my nomination. I also appreciate the strong commitment to fairness you both have expressed.
As you can well imagine, I am deeply embarrassed and disappointed by the errors that required me to amend my tax returns. I apologize for the errors and profoundly regret that you have had to devote time to them. I will be happy to answer any Committee members' questions about these issues. In the meantime, as a follow-up to our conversations, I would like to briefly review three issues discussed at my meeting with your staff and mentioned in our meeting on Thursday.
Last fall, when I was being considered for this position, the Presidential Transition Team's vetters reviewed my records. During the course of those reviews, the vetting team flagged charitable contributions they felt were deducted in error. When my accountant realized I would need to file amended returns, he suggested addressing another matter I had raised with him earlier in the year: whether the use of a car service offered to me by a close friend might be a tax issue. In December, my accountant advised me that it should be reported as imputed income in the amended returns.
At about the same time, the friend's company, a consulting client, informed my accountant of a clerical error it had made on the Form 1099 it provided to me and reported to the IRS for 2007. In an effort to ensure full compliance and the most complete disclosure possible of my personal finances, we remedied these issues by filing amended tax returns with full payments, including interest. We provided all this information to the Committee in addition to the completed Committee questionnaire and my responses to your staff's questions. I disclosed this information to the Committee voluntarily, and paid the taxes and any interest owed promptly. My mistakes were unintentional.
I am available to answer any further questions you might have and look forward to coming before the Committee in the very near future to discuss the critical health and human services issues facing our country. Should I be approved by your Committee and confirmed by the Senate, I look forward to working in partnership with you both to pass meaningful legislation that will help Americans get the health reform they need and deserve and to ensure that all HHS programs and activities reflect a commitment to responding to the needs of our citizens in a manner that is compassionate, cost-effective, and transparent.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Tom Daschle

I wonder who's making the giant sucking sound?

"He would rather spit in the face of all of the Dems who voted for a Democratic administration ... instead of nominating Dean."
The people LOVE Howard Dean, as nobody's gonna love The Puppet once the now-disappearing shine wears off -- AND he's actually a DOCTOR, instead of a corporate hustler. (And he won the election for the "Obama" organization, and Dean would have BEEN president -- instead of the neo-cons -- except for John Kerry's and the corporate media's sabbing of the Dean campaign.)
Whatever is WORST in the formerly-Democratic Party ALWAYS goes back to John Kerry -- who invented "Obama" as a national brand AND is all over teevee saying what a perfect prince his co-conspirator Daschle is.
Maybe we need a revolution. The Declaration of Independence DOES provide for that, when the government stops working.

jpt quotes Daschle
"At about the same time, the friend's company, a consulting client, informed my accountant of a clerical error it had made on the Form 1099 it provided to me and reported to the IRS for 2007."
Gosh, an AMAZING convergence of belated tax concerns! Too amazing to be believed -- and the teevee lineup of "Democrats" and hack analysts attesting to Daschle's non-existent "integrity" is at odds with, for example, an msnbc poll of mere citizens showing 85% of them AGAINST Daschle . . .
Even BEFORE Daschle's corporate hustles -- he has other outstanding problems other than not deigning to pay taxes, which he may have done to conCEAL some things from becoming public record -- became widely known, the "Obama" organization's drafting of Daschle for HHS stunk to high heaven.
How about this: give this corporate crook sodium pentothal and put him on CSPAN for a couple of days.

Nice to know that our new President now has a Tammy Wynette complex! He going to Stand By His Man!!!
"Obama, speaking with reporters, said he "absolutely" stands by his Cabinet choice. Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., chairman of the committee, issued a statement supporting Daschle's confirmation.
"The ability to advance meaningful health reform is my top priority in confirming a Secretary of Health and Human Services, and I remain convinced that Senator Daschle would be an invaluable and expert partner in this effort. I am eager to move forward together," Baucus said."
Nice to know there is not another soul alive who can do this job either!
Very Good Mr. President...Very Good
No "Change' Here - Just Politics As Usual !!!

We're so sorry, uncle Albert.

Daschle is a Liar, Cheat and a Thief. Any IRS agent would be put in jail. New meaning for the word CHANGE = Do as I say not as I do because I won period.

Seems to me, that given that many of the nominees have tax payment problems, that it would make sense to investigate all member of both houses. Having turned up two tax-dodgers in such a small group of nominees, doesn't it make sense that they have to be more of them - Dems and Repubs!

So much for honest politicians and a government run by agents of "change" Not too many years ago the tax cheat, Tom Daschel, was heard to say that tax cheats should be punished to the full extent of the law.
this makes me sick. Why should any of the honest citizens who try to do right and pay their taxes and obey the laws continue to try to do the right thing.
Grow a spine!!!

$140,000 in tax evasion gets normal people jail time.
Not Democrats, apparently.
Do ANY Democrats pay taxes?

I love the way Obama is changing America's image.
Weaken our military, bow down to terrorist leaders, let tax cheats and Chicago thugs run the country, waste trillions on pork.

Obama has absolutely no integrity.
So much for his "era of responsibility".

Obama has been given a golden opportunity to correct a terrible wrong that he and his cohorts have committed, that is, the shutting out of Howard Dean and Gen. Wesley Clark from his administration/cabinet. He could address this wrong by nominating Gen. Wesley Clark as Commerce Secretary and Gov. Dean as HHS Secretary. But, of course, he won't. He would rather spit in the face of all of the Dems who voted for a Democratic administration, by nominating a Republican for Commerce Secretary; and overlook Daschle's tax cheating, instead of nominating Dean. Both Clark and Dean were instrumental in helping the Dems regain the House in 2006, and they both worked tirelessly for Obama during the general election. However, he has totally dissed them by refusing to nominate/appoint them to help him with the many challenges we face in this country. He should be ashamed of himself!

Even the hard left liberals must be disappointed with the Cabinet of Corruption. It's as if they have given up on hope and change and gone with fear and corruption (Chicago-style politics).
Actually, it's worse than that. No other administration has stacked the cabinet with so many questionable characters. Why doesn't Congress grow a backbone and deny confirmation for these crooks and cheats?
Love the term "Rationalized" Health Care but I think we are all going to hate the consequences.

shenanagans I say! Obama says if the stimulus doesn't go through he won't be re elected, hello putting a bunch of crooks in your cabnet seems fine to you, *slap hand on forhead*

OBama said he is closing Guantánamo Prison for terrorist that want to destroy America because it makes America looks bad. But Obama is hiring a bunch of crooks and tax cheats to run his highest cabinet positions
huhhh.

With the Treasury Secretary and nor good ole Tom - sounds like integrity is not part of the hiring crtiteria - but then look at Illinois politics

Thank you Mr. Daschle for another "unintentional" mistake - Your FAILURE to APOLOGIZE to the AMERICAN PEOPLE!
Yet Another Liberal Tax Cheat, Another Liberal Who thinks the Rules do not apply to him!
Obama was so concerned about lobbyists and people working for agencies & companies they rely on each other, that he forgot to add some BASIC ethics to his grandiose website & executive orders on ethics. I guess it was too much to assume that his nominees actually paid their taxes!
"Is Obama just another politician with a gift for speaking?"
Rueuhy - That is EXACTLY what Obama is!
Nothing more, Nothing less

The issue is really not what these nominees have done but rather the fact these actions are being totally overlooked by our legislative bodies. Hold the hearings and then go ahead and make the appointments. Sounds sort of stupid. No doubt that the (good old boy system is still working in Washington and has been imported from Chicago).

So, Tom Daschle is another dirty politician. When does this "change we can believe in" begin? I thought he was supposed to start changing things in Washington. Did he lie? Is Obama just another politician with a gift for speaking? Fortunately I'm from Illinois where we don't see this kind of blatant corruption in our leaders in the democratic party. Or the republican side either. With the exception of governors and politicians from Chicago. Wait a minute!! Obama's from Chicago isn't he? Maybe there's a connection? I predict a new third party will eventually rise up as a new powerhouse. The democrats and republicans have run out of good ideas and are too full of corruption.

If I failed to report over $300,000 in income, I doubt an apology would suffice. I would likely be on my way to prison. This guy gets a cabinet post. Is this what Biden was talking about when he said paying higher taxes is the "patriotic" think to do? The double standards coming from both the White House and Congress are shameful.
