'Marvelous Malia' and 'Sweet Sasha' Retired
February 03, 2009 2:21 PM
ABC News' Yunji de Nies reports: Ty Inc. has retired their "Marvelous Malia" and "Sweet Sasha" dolls. The Beanie Baby maker earned the ire of the First Lady, after the dolls bearing her daughters names debuted. Michelle Obama's spokeswoman released a statement saying, "We believe it is inappropriate to use young, private citizens for marketing purposes."
The company refused repeated requests for an interview with ABC News, but had told reporters that the dolls were not inspired by the First Tweens, but rather that they simply liked the names. The dolls retail for $9.99 each and are sure to be snatched up by collectors. On last check, they were selling on eBay.com for as high as $129.00.

What is personal to some people is their prerogative. This doll incident is not an excuse to make unhealthy comments about the Obama's. If you agree or disagree this is not your fight, stay out of it, and find a cause worth fighting for. The world would be a better place for it.

OMG, Just leave the Obama family alone. They are making a great sacrifice to try to rescue our country from the mess that the cowboy left us.. Give them some space and don't forget to say thanks..

What genius came up with those dolls anyway? Pretty lame.

Giving parental consent for your children to be on magazine problems is far different than finding suddenly your girls have dolls named after them

Correction: Giving parental consent for your children to be on a magazine Is far different than . . . .

Liz- It's debatable if what was taken for granted earlier is still safe. I live in an urban, middle class area with a low crime rate -- where the streets tend to be empty on Halloween nights, and you'll see very few kids walking to and from school. Giving parental consent for your children to be on magazine problems is far different than finding suddenly your girls have dolls named after them. I applaud Michelle Obama for wanting to raise her kids as normally as possible under circumstances far from it. So far it's paid off, they come across as unaffected and happy.

Kathy -- My children walked to school in elementary school (the middle school is too far) and went trick or treating. These things are still safe! This isn't an exploitation issue precisely -- this is more an issue of Michelle Obama didn't like it and demanded it gone. In earlier eras, those who sought power didn't whine about the less attractive aspects of winning it. THe Obamas want everything their way. No exploitation of their children! But they're on magazine covers.

There were paper dolls of the Kennedy kids, plus Madame Alexander dolls of Jackie and Caroline.

That was fifty years ago before child safety and exploitation were big issues throughout the nation. There's a lot that was okay and appropriate half a century ago that no longer is, like walking to school or trick-or-treating.

"I also would like to know how she threatened them to stop. That is the scary unanswered part of this story."
What kind of scurrilous speculation is this nonsense? The is not the Jerry Springer Show. Her statement was calm, measured, and spot-on, and the Ty cmpany go the message. This is an example of "adult" communication. . . back to your twittering tweedle.

Obama derangement syndrome has taken such a hold right wingers are apparently outraged that the Obama children can't be exploited commercially.

"I also would like to know how she threatened them to stop. That is the scary unanswered part of this story."
psst: since the doll-makers didn't blow up or disappear, it's probable that some Obama "friend" -- like Daschle's "friend" -- probably threw the doll people a chunk of change to make 'em go away AND stop talking.
Or maybe the "Obama" organization's gonna put em in His cabinet.

But the Obama children are more special than most, apparently.

Good
TY should donate all profits

Michelle, you do NOT have trademark rights on the names Sasha or Malia.
If you think you do because you named your kids that, then pay up. My kid was born before yours and has that name. I thought is was nice to have dolls named after my kids.
I also would like to know how she threatened them to stop. That is the scary unanswered part of this story.

Now that the shine's off the "Obama" organization, maybe Pepsi et al. will also back off? Or is it just NON-corporate merchandising -- with the absence of immense political contributions -- that rattles the Dunbakus?
