On C-SPAN, Historians Rate W the 7th Worst President Ever

February 15, 2009 9:41 AM

This morning we learn that C-SPAN has surveyed historians to again come up with a President's Day ranking of commanders-in-chief.

Fittingly, for this Abe-a-licious year, the 16th president comes in at #1, with Honest Abe Lincoln retaining his top slot.

He's followed by George Washington, FDR, Teddy Roosevelt, and Harry S Truman in the top five slots. JFK, Thomas Jefferson, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Woodrow Wilson, and Ronald Reagan finish out the Top Ten.

The worst president, as judged by the panel of historians, is James Buchanan.

Second worst -- Lincoln's successor, Andrew Johnson.

Third worst - Franklin Pierce. Fourth worst - William Henry Harrison. Fifth worst - Warren G. Harding. Sixth worst - Millard Fillmore.

And there he is, George W. Bush, ranked as 7th worst. (8th worst is John Tyler.)

Reagan, Clinton and George H.W. Bush have all advanced in rankings since the last time C-SPAN did this survey, in 2000. Bill Clinton back then was ranked 21st; he's now 15th. Reagan went from 11 to 10. Bush Sr. went from 20 to 18.

Jimmy Carter, interestingly went down -- from 22 to 25.

"Bill Clinton and Ulysses S. Grant aren't often mentioned in the same sentence - until now," said historian Richard Norton Smith. "Participants in the latest C-SPAN survey of presidential historians have boosted each man significantly higher than in the original survey conducted in 2000. All of which goes to show two things: the fluidity with which presidential reputations are judged, and the difficulty of assessing any president who has only just recently left office."

This all gives me an excuse to show this video of the late great Peter Jennings asking Bill Clinton about the rankings -- in particular about Clinton ranking 41st on "moral authority," behind Richard Nixon. Compelling video.

Happy President's Day.

We miss you, Peter.

I think the verdict is still out on Richard Nixon. He did a lot of good things. While the Watergate coverup was unfortunate, we now know that other presidents have done the same kind of things.
I believe that he was one of the most intelligent presidents we ever had, and he was very good at, by God, getting things done.
He got us out of Vietnam. When The Soviet Union was considering moving in troops to the Middle East during 1973's Yom Kippur war, Nixon put American armed forces on worldwide nuclear alert and Leonid Brezhnev backed down.
Nixon's playing the China Card against the USSR was a master stroke of power politics and lead directly to Detente with Russia.
He actually did much for civil rights, for African Americans, while talking middle-of-the-road.
And I liked the man.
So overall while the jury is still out, I give him high marks in foreign and domestic policy.

These are the same GREAT historians gave Andrew Jackson a good rating, the guy that spat on the constitution and ignored the supreme court. Remember, those that cannot do - teach. Most likely taught all if those insatiable MBA’s on Wall Street. Go team!

What about Vice Presidents? Can Cheney and Burr shoot it out for last place?

In today's $750 million+ media extravaganza that we call the Presidential election, Lincoln would lose. With his raspy voice and homely physical appearance he would have been a "non-starter".

Is this American Bandstand? I found it Ok to listen to -- but I just couldn't dance to it!!

My first presidential memories are of Kennedy's funeral, then of President Johnson becoming President and drafting young men to go to Vietnam. I was a little kid, but I was horrified by the war in Vietnam. I remember Nixon, whom I hated because he kept us in Vietnam, and the Watergate hearings. I was shocked to think people at that level of government would actually break the law. The Nixon years turned me into a Democrat, but not before I voted for Ford, in my first election, because he reminded me of my Dad, I was only 18. I didn't cotten to Jimmy Carter, at first, but he grew on me as I saw in him a moral and principled leader. He warned us we needed to conserve energy, and pursue peace in the Middle east, but Americans preferred Ronald Reagan because he was an optimist, and an old school, John Wayne type politician. I disliked Reagan because I disagreed with his policies, but I didn't hate him. I didn't support Bill Clinton in the primary but I did vote for him for President. By his second term I knew he was one of the best Presidents we ever had. Then the Bush years came, and I honestly debated moving to Canada, (I already live in Maine, pretty close.) Bush moved the country so far to the right I questioned whether I wanted to stay here. But then, miracle of miracles, we got Obama.

I think Obama combines the moral principle of Jimmy Carter with Bill Clinton's political savvy. I feel good about my country again, because even if we are in a recession, we are once again a moral country.

Funny how people lack the basic knowledge of American history. Example, it was Eisenhower (repub) who first put troops in Vietnam - right after the French lost in Dien Bien Phu in 1954. JFK was not POTUS then. JFK gets credit for giving the nation hope and a cause, remember he started the challenge of putting a man on the moon? And don't forget it was a German from WWII who did the work (Warner Von Braun). Yes Lincoln was the best, he held this country together. Cost lots of lives in doing so. Washington as the first POTUS, give it to him. The remaining 3 on the list are Democrats. And yes, there were attacks on the American mainland during WWII, U-boats sinking ships right off the Jersey and Texas coasts, Oregon was bombed, German agents and their bombings. So bush is not the first POTUS to deal with attacks on American mainland. Get a grip folks and admit that this country has had it best times, economically, fiscally and socially, under Democratic administrations. And don't put religion into this, we are a secular country. You want a religious country then go to Iran.

Jason, go back and review the facts about inflation and unemployment during the Carter years! You need to educate yourself! I lived through those years, and the unemployment and high interest rates (over 20%)...Carter was the WORST!

Jason
How could you possibly say that JFK is comparable to JFK? Lincoln kept the democrats from seceding so that they couldn't continue their precious slavery. He also freed the slaves once he won the Civil War. What did JFK do again?

JFK was lukewarm on his civil rights advocacy up until his campaign. He also caused the Cuban Missile crisis by double crossing Cuban rebels at the bay of pigs. After that, he weakened America by removing our missiles from Turkey, which is why he is credited for "getting America through the cuban missile crisis".

After that political disaster, he decided he would get tough on communism. He marched into Vietnam, which ultimately resulted in 58,000 Americans dead, and accomplished NOTHING.
Liberals of that time were the same traitors they are today. They forced America's early withdrawal, which led to the SLAUGHTER OF MILLIONS OF SOUTH VIETNAMESE AT THE HANDS OF THE NORTH. Thank you Jane Fonda and the rest of the hippy idiots.

As to why JFK is not in the same boat as slick willie (the prez who was accused of rape by juanita brodderick, slept with paula jones/lewinsky ect), it's because liberal media refused to touch JFK's infidelity back then. Now, there some conservative news outlets- thank GOD!

So True that Liberals write history even in the case of Lincoln, JFK, etc... Lincolns republican party of the 1850's and 1860's was more comparable to the Democrats of today. Hence the Radical republicans I mentioned earlier. Buchanan may be blames in some view but he avoided an earlier breakout of war by providing some defense against the radicals ideals. Lincoln and JFK are two that are held so highly I feel as much in remembrance of brutal assassinations as they are for what they really accomplished. As far as the worst in history That's hard to choose among so many "do-nothings" that have held the office. but Surely Bill Clinton is not one of those solely on his white house affair if that is his biggest flaw then why isn't JFK in the same predicament.

Posted by: Jason | Feb 16, 2009 1:52:33 PM

George Bush's biggest failure was that he didn't do enough in fighting the socialist democrats in Washington. Those idiots (frank, reid, schumer, dodd, pelosi, waters) caused the crisis and history will blame Bush.

Liberals write history, which is why JFK is regarded as a great president by many. He is credited with "getting America through the Cuban missile Crisis", but no one seems to remember that he was the one who got us INTO that mess in the first place. He also took America to Vietnam where 58,000 soldiers were killed.

God only knows what the socialist liberals will write about BO. The man is nothing more then jeremiah wright and jimmy carter mixed together, but history will show that he walked on water.

The article didn't exactly go into any details as to why the ratings appeared that way. FDR, Lincoln, Washington, Truman, JKF. The beat Presidents (not in order). Nixon, Bush jr, Buchanan, some of the worst. Carter had morals and was ruined by that. Clinton was a man of the people, but he lost his path. Reagan was given many opportunities to succeed, but only managed to pass 2 tests of office. Bush Sr got out of office before he could ruin civil rights with his religious idealoge. Obama is trying to get both sides together, but he may find that a pipe dream so he may have to get tough and will be criticized for appearing to be too dictatorial.

W= won the Iraq war which = (4,243 US casualties and 30,928 wounded soldiers and still no end in sight)

W= wrecked Al Qaeda = (Al Qaeda flourishing in more countries than ever - Iraq didn't have Al Qaeda until we invaded)

W= wonderful husband and father (really?)

W= worked hard to restore dignity to the Oval Office - (by wearing long sleeve shirts and a jacket -- according to his former chief of staff Andrew Card)

Thank you George Bush for keeping us safe? these past years!

Posted by: snooch | Feb 16, 2009 1:05:45 PM

I'd agree with a lot of other people that George W. was the worst. He filled his administration with yes men, gave way too much power and influence to his vice-prez and the oil companies, made many appointments to vastly unqualified people, tried to bypass the Constitution, made decisions that defied logic and popular knowledge and spent our tax dollars so wildly he raised our national debt around 4.3 trillion dollars. And that's not even counting waging war on Iraq by mistake.
It is a crying shame he was our president.

Posted by: Lydia | Feb 16, 2009 12:56:55 PM

I'm not sure how accurately we'll be able to judge G.W. Bush until his presidential archives are released, and we're able to see what actually went on behind the scenes. Unfortunately, G.W. Bush and Cheney pushed legislation that restricts this from happening until they, and most of us are long dead, which I'm sure was done solely in the interest of national security, and not just to ensure that Americans don't show up at their doorsteps with torches and pitchforks...

are you people crazy obama is the 1# president

Posted by: josh | Feb 16, 2009 12:17:52 PM

"Dubya is the first president in American history to enter the White House by stopping legal votes from being counted".

Where do you far-left loons come up with this stuff? Do you realize that they did several recounts, and the messiah of global warming still lost!

Do you really want to talk about election fraud? How about BO's client in the early 90's- ACORN. Those people have corrupted more elections in the history of our country than anybody else.

Just because the mainstream whackjob media ignored barry's ties to that far-left group doesn't mean they didn't exist.
