Sin City Mayor Says Obama's Vegas Dis Ain't Worth Craps

February 10, 2009 10:31 PM

Oscar Goodman, the colorful mayor of Las Vegas, is outraged over comments President Obama made about his city, and has demanded that the president pay him an apology.

At issue are remarks about corporate responsibility Obama made at a town hall Monday in Elkhart, Ind., when responding to a question from an audience member.

“We’re going to do something to strengthen the banking system," Mr. Obama said, “You are not going to be able to give out these big bonuses until you pay taxpayers back. You can't get corporate jets. You can't go take a trip to Las Vegas or go down to the Super Bowl on the taxpayers' dime. There's got to be some accountability and some responsibility.”

Goodman responded today with outrage at Obama’s singling out his city in a negative light, dissuading -- in his view -- travel to Sin City.

“That's outrageous," Goodman, a Democrat, said to KLAS-TV today. "He owes us an apology. He owes us a retraction. What is a better place, I say, for them to come here. For them to change their mind and go someplace else and to cancel at the suggestion of the president of the United States, that is outrageous.”

Goodman is also the chairman of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority and asked the state’s congressional delegation to speak to President Obama about this matter.

Goodman last made national news for defending an earmark he wanted put in the stimulus package, a $50 million museum dedicated to the history of organized crime.

No superbowl parties... what about the one that was hosting in the White House on the Tax Payer's dime?

Dear Las Vegas,

The world already knows about the Las Vegas modus-operandi. When reference is made to "The Nevada Gaming Commission" it's made to sound like some kind of "holy alliance". "The Nevada Gaming Commission" is nothing more than the legal head of gambling tyranny and gambling greed in Nevada. If a gambler counts cards, he's labeled a crook and tossed out. (I guess he should be dreaming about prostitutes and free breakfasts.) If he wins by ANY method besides "LUCK", he's labeled a crook, and we both know luck hardly ever happens. (What a COINCiDENCE!!)

The Casinos are in business to make a profit, you say. Go ahead, and make a profit, unless you're talking about making it with our "government decision makers" and our tax dollars.
In that case, nobody owes you an apology or even a clarification, especially the President.

honestly,

The President of the United States, CANNOT tell anyone or any Company, what they CAN or CANNOT do!!

What are you going to do when Obama tells YOU ...that you make too much money & you can't take that holiday vacation!!

This is what America was built on, hard working American's...you can be as successful as you want to be or be a failure. Where are the real men anymore, they are all just a bunch of lazy wimps~ People are just getting lazy & want a free ride~

The president don't owe this guy NOTHIN'. Executives from companies getting federal bailout funds SHOULDN'T be going on corporate trips to Las Vegas or events such as the Super Bowl, and it's outrageous for the mayor of Las Vegas to think they should. Obama wants to cut off Las Vegas' biggest source of income. Oh no! That can't HAPPEN?!?!

The less-than-honorable Mayor Goodman owes us an apology. What part of "you can't go take a trip to Las Vegas or go down to the Super Bowl on the taxpayers' dime," is he having a problem with? Fatcat party is over for now, Mr. Mayor. Don't even get me started on what a blight on a blight Vegas is. Nice job, ABC, for digging up a speck of dirt---I can see Jake in full scramble mode..."hey, look, a Democrat is criticizing Obama...this is a meaty story..."

Though Mayor Goodman seems to be appreciated by the majority of his fellow Las Vegas citizens as "brutally honest", he should spend more time worrying about his city's economy rather than taking offense at President Obama's speech.

The heads of the SuperBowl haven't gone runningand complaining to the press like spoiled teenage girls suddenly deprived of their text-messaging minutes like Mayor Goodman has.

We're canceling our company's outing to Las Vegas if this is the kind of vapid showmanship the city's Mayor engages in.

context is everything. any person who heard or read what Obama said would understand that he was referring to CEOs blowing tax-payer monies at Las Vegas on fun trips. and besides rich people maybe not going to Vegas right now is a good thing. Las Vegas thrives when people have money to throw away. alot of people don't have that option now. but Obama was clearly sending a message to Wall Street executives, bank officials and TARP recipients not to the average American.

great.. when is the government going to take responsbility? yeah like that would happen.. Like always they will blame this that in the other person.. While entertaining whoever on a private jet... If a bank entertains someone to get business how is that wrong? I guess it's wrong unless it's on a commercial jet, to a library.

Posted by: george | Feb 11, 2009 10:43:28 AM

Hypocrisy it simply is. This kind of spending by bankers on taxpayer dime is bad-but its still spending and helping to keep and put people to work. The stimulus package-well isnt that what Obama and the representatives are saying about the huge porkulus pkg? It may not be appropriate spending but it still puts people to work on the taxpayers dime...

haha, some of you people make me laugh because what you say is pathetic. WHY are you people bashing Obama rather than people who have stolen your money and are using it irresponsibly once again. I agree with "outraged by people's selfishness". and hey if you see this, don't worry, i'm outraged too.

How come you people aren't bitchiin about how Bush and his monkeys are the reason WHY over 3 MILLION are out of jobs. THE REPUBLICANS IN THE HOUSE WERE TOO GREEDY AND DIDNT CARE ABOUT THE PEOPLE THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO HELP. How come you right wingers didn't complain about Bush taking small trips on jets? the billions he gave out to banks and corporations who did not deserve a cent? how about the fact that bush used his daddy to get him out of serving the country? i understand Obama didn't serve in the military either, but at least he served his community.

how about how he cheated in his second election in florida? yeah republicans, keep talking crap on Obama who's only been in office for a month and has done more in that month than bush has in 8 years. the thing he's done? he's cared about lower and middle class citizens.

if you're going to criticize the perks of being president, you should of started a long time ago. MAYBE, Obama did use tax money for his party, maybe he paid for it himself. BAILED OUT COMPANIES USE TAX MONEY TO DO ALL OF THIS STUPID CRAP WHEN THEY DID NOTHING FOR THE PEOPLE. HOW CAN YOU HONOR TOP EMPLOYEES AND GIVE THEM BONUSES WHEN THEIR COMPANY ALMOST BECAME NONEXISTENT??

I don't see Obama's comment as particularly divisive in any way.
But as POTUS Obama needs to stop ####### on people all of the time with his condescending parental attitude.
This is what tees folks off.
This story in of itself is stupid & the Mayor of Vegas needs to get busy with something else more important.

I suppose it is too late for UNITE HERE (a union representing some 450,000 foodservice and hotel workers nationwide, including Local 226 of the Culinary Workers Union the Las Vegas-based chapter that represents some 60,000 people employed in Nevada’s casinos) to rescind its endorsement of Barack Obama for president?

Posted by: BadBet | Feb 11, 2009 10:09:55 AM

By how the article is written, you could assume Obama referred to Vegas as Sin City, which he did not. It was placed immediately after the quote, forming a suggestion that he said it.

It's interesting about the preceding reports--which for example, presented a GOP lamblasting of Obama from such dignitaries as Vitter and a headlines claiming that the stimulus bill "barely passed," even though it passed filibuster proof with 61 votes.

Most people remember the concerted Bill and Hillary Clinton attacks throughout the 90's, when the media and GOP were singing together in harmony. I have to admit, things are sounding really retro with the refrains at ABC.

"It means that a trip to Vegas or the Super Bowl is a luxury and that these jokers can't be taking luxury trips ON THE TAXPAYER'S DIME."

This policy should work both ways, if we are concerning ourselves about "taxpayer money". If you work for the government you should be taking boondoggles and and agencies shouldn't be attending or scheduling boondoggles in Las Vegas, Hawaii, Disney,..you get the picture. If you live in a glass house, be careful who you throw rocks at, or is this another example of BHO's duplicitous rhetoric of "do as I say, not as I do".

Obama won't apologize to the Mayor of Vegas--but he will apologize to Mahmoud Amadinejad in Iran.

Obama carried Nevada thanks to Vegas. The whole state is almsot entirely red except Vegas. You got DUPED!!!
That's change you can believe in

I think you people have forgotten who gave them OUR money in the first place (with no oversight I might add). Obama is now trying to clean up one of the worst messes left by a previous president in the history of this country. That is a FACT and you can try to naysay it all you want. Lemme guess...you've worked in the banking, mortgage, or financial industry for the past 10 years and now you are pissed off that a) you're not making a 6+ figure salary anymore, b) you've lost your job, or c) you're now afraid that someone might actually make you accountable for the money you've swindled out of people in your "career." If you don't like what's going on, take a look in the mirror and face the facts or take a hike. The faster people like you are gone, the faster our world will be a better place.

Posted by: outraged by people's selfishness | Feb 11, 2009 8:30:37 AM

The real story here is that POTUS is seen as justifiably telling private citizens where they should hold celebrations and how extravagant it should be? Is this what the role of POTUS is? This mentality is apparently backed by the view that TARP means Gov't can behave as a major stock holder in private companies. If TARP makes Gov't a stock holder with all privelages that you or I would have if we were a major stock holder then TARP is bad policy and contrary to the premise of a gov't presiding over a free, constitutional republic!

>Tens of millions of Americans retirement accounts are being depleated and the President of the United States LAUGHS?

They don't see this as a crisis - they see it as an opportunity to increase their political power. At least, that's what his political advisor Rahm Emmanuel said. What does it matter to Obama if your retirement savings are depleted? He's got his taxpayer-subsidized retirement all lined up, so what's the problem? Are you questioning the leader?

OMG. What idiots. Can't people see the comment "You can't go take a trip to Las Vegas or go down to the Super Bowl on the taxpayers' dime" is actually a compliment to Las Vegas and the Super Bowl!!??? Ok. I'll spell it out for you: It means that a trip to Vegas or the Super Bowl is a luxury and that these jokers can't be taking luxury trips ON THE TAXPAYER'S DIME. THAT is the point. Oscar Goodman should be issuing an apology for being an idiot. Or for trying to use the President as free marketing for people to come to Vegas.
