DNI Blair: Controversial Chas Freeman Comments 'All Been Out of Context'

At a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing this morning, Director of National Intelligence Dennis Blair said that the many quotes of Freeman's that critics are taking issue with are being twisted. "As far as the statements that have appeared in the press, I would say that, I would say that those have all been out of context," Blair said. "And I urge everyone to look at the full context of what he was saying." Every time we've written of Freeman's quotes -- "We have paid heavily and often in treasure for our unflinching support and unstinting subsidies of Israel's approach to managing its relations with the Arabs. Five years ago, we began to pay with the blood of our citizens here at home," he said, for instance -- we provided the links to the whole speech, if they existed. I agree with Admiral Blair: check out the context for yourself. Congressional Quarterly today reports that Admiral Blair has written a response letter to critics concerned about Freeman, writing that Freeman's employer, the Middle East Policy Council, received no more than a twelfth of its annual budget from Saudi Arabia, has never been a lobbyist, and would not serve him in any policy capacity, among other things. -- jpt
