Deviating from Official Flu Warnings, VP Biden Suggests Americans Should Avoid All Mass Transit
April 30, 2009 8:48 AM
The White House was forced to issue a clarifying statement after Vice President Biden went a little off-message this morning about what he would advise his family in terms of the current flu crisis.
Asked by NBC's Matt Lauer what he would tell a member of his family who came to him and asked whether he should fly to and from Mexico on a commercial airliner in the next week, the vice president gave an answer that goes much farther than the precautions the president suggested last night, or the travelers' advisories given by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
"I would tell members of my family, and I have, 'I wouldn't go anywhere in confined places now,'" the vice president said. "It's not that he's going to Mexico, it's that you're in a confined aircraft, and one person sneezes, it goes all the way through the aircraft."
"That's me," the vice president said.
"I would not be -- at this point, if they had another way of transportation -- suggesting they ride the subway," the vice president said. "So from my perspective what relates to mitigation, if you're out in the middle of a field and someone sneezes, that's one thing. If you're in a closed aircraft or a closed container or closed car or closed class room, it's a different thing."

Elizabeth Alexander, the vice president's spokeswoman, quickly issued a statement saying that “the advice he is giving family members is the same advice the administration is giving to all Americans: that they should avoid unnecessary air travel to and from Mexico. If they are sick, they should avoid airplanes and other confined public spaces, such as subways. This is the advice the vice president has given family members who are traveling by commercial airline this week. As the president said just last night, every American should take the same steps you would take to prevent any other flu: keep your hands washed; cover your mouth when you cough; stay home from work if you're sick; and keep your children home from school if they're sick.”
That, of course, is not what the vice president said. In fact, he specifically suggested travel to and from Mexico wasn't the issue -- the problem was being in a confined space.
The CDC's advice is that Americans avoid non-essential travel to Mexico, and that those traveling to affected areas:
- Avoid contact with ill persons;
- When you cough or sneeze, cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or your sleeve (if you do not have a tissue). Throw used tissues in a trash can;
- After you cough or sneeze, wash your hands with soap and water, or use an alcohol-based hand gel;
- If you think you are ill with flu, avoid close contact with others as much as possible. Stay at home or in your hotel room. Seek medical care if you are severely ill (such as having trouble breathing). There are antiviral medications for prevention and treatment of swine flu that a doctor can prescribe. Do not go to work, school, or travel while ill.

Why not simply adopt the practice that the Japanese have done? They have mass transit systems that are far superior to any region in the US, as do most nations in the world, btw. They use common sense, if you feel like you may have a cold or flu, you wear a face mask.period. Now that the new flu season is upon us, this is the kind of advice that could really help. Those who dispute or deride Biden for his comments are very simply - incorrect. What he said is what the CDC recommends - "AVOID CLOSE PERSONAL CONTACT". Whether you exhibit symptoms or not, you can spread virus via the air - THE INCUBATION PERIOD IS TWO DAYS - meaning someone can have it and not be aware they have it - AND BE SITTING IN THE SEAT NEXT TO YOU ON THE PLANE AND COUGH OR SNEEZE EMITTING AIRBORNE DROPLETS CONTAINING THE VIRUS THAT YOU BREATH IN. That's how colds and influenza spread. Why is this so difficult for people to understand - and why is JB being crucified? Has America dumbed down that much?

What else are you telling your family Joe, buy a foreign made car - they're better quality? Joe Foot-In-Mouth Biden, what a kidder.

Bidens answer was truthful and correct. For those of you that dispute his wisdom I hope you enjoy your dirt nap.

I can't wait for the government to run our health care system. "Don't worry- it's not a problem. You don't need to see a doctor. It's just a little level 5 pandemic."

I agree with Biden, just because he's a political figure doesn't mean he's not human. I want safety for my family also. So, I personally think people need to stop pushing all of this.

VP Biden was asked a question and he answered it.
And his answer was right on target...so everyone, please stop making something out of nothing.

I can't help but think, when the vice president - a person who has access to top secret information - says he's advising his family not to travel on airplanes and subways, that he must know something we little folk don't know. Even health officials are saying it's safe to fly .... so is this a "misspeak" or a warning?

"Ok ,that's it. Republicans are on ignore from now until they come up with something intelligent and meaningful to bring to the discussion ,which doesn't look likely in the near term ."

Why bring the Republicans into this? They didn't force Biden to make his comments and they've remained mostly quiet on the issue. It's the DEMOCRATS who are criticizing one of their own.
It's attitudes like this, posted by people who have no interest in the facts, that are driving this country into a pit of despair!

"rasmussen polling reports that 53% of people think next president will be republican, this is after 100 days. this is not good for DEms

If you're quoting Rasmussen polling, you obviously were never a BO supporter. Their samples are always skewed to the right from every other sampling.

First Biden tells everyone that something "big" will happen in Obama's first 100 days - now he is saying people shouldn't use mass transit - maybe he is "predicting" the future again.

Let me guess, Obama is "furious" with Biden! I've heard it all before. Kind of gets old.

Biden is for shutting school classrooms down but is against stopping flights from mexico.
Last week U.S should have told american citizens living in mexico they have one week to return home.
Last week our government should have stopped all non american citizens from flying into u.s from mexico.
There should be a travel ban on flights from mexico.
Almost all the people that have this are catching it from having traveled to mexico and they spread it further in the u.s.
Allowing these flights to continue only spreads the virus to more people in america.
Obama says the barn door is open but he is opening it even more by having napalitano have this passive screening.
So Joe Biden is getting praised for saying stop having our children in classrooms but continue the flights from mexico.
The flights from mexico are very damaging.
Airplanes are the worst thing to be on and the people in mexico coming on the planes to the u.s are spreading it from person to person on the plane.
Biden says it makes no difference to stop the planes from mexico but it does.
Those planes from mexico are spreading the flu.
Many people that have the flu in the u.s were on the same flights.
We are fortunate this didn't happen during spring break.

People are getting seriously sick from a flue that spreads rapidly throughout the body to the point of making people physically unable to move or even unable to open their eyes. The numbers of death are low in the USA. It could be because we do get our flue shots although not every single year. Common sense meassures are important to maintain. This flue attacks the entire body, and the bones. Would I ride in an airplane now? Not without a mask, a sanitizer, antibacterial wipes. definately wear my glasses, the eyes need protection. Would I ride in a subway now? Only if I wore a mask and opened all the windows and carried my bottle sanitizer and antibacterial sheets. Am I over reacting? I live in one of the south west border states. A few of our schools have been closed and we do have quite a few cases in our state. I don't care what you think, but So far, knock on wood after sanitizing it, I am not coughing yet.

Yes, Joe Biden did say statements were his opinion and his advice for his family only. Medical Research substantiates he is quite correct. Confined spaces are a problem.
Why the big scare now? Medical Community of experts do not have extensive knowledge about this H1N1 Virus, no vaccine available, and the death count in Mexico, etc. I live in California and multiple schools are closed for exactly VP Bidens same reason. No one knows how serious virus will be. Extreme caution is being taken all across the world. Mexico has now recommended all businesses to close in attempt to halt spread. Recommendations to all Mexican residents to avoid people congested areas.
VP Biden is quite correct when he states presence in confined spaces containing many people exposes a person more to this virus if unknowingly is present, and increases the risk to become ill themselves.
VP Biden is just being careful regarding his family. People have no way of knowing if all travelers are healthy, or in a contagious stage. Some people still ignore health alerts.
Unfortunately all news media are jumping on "stay out of public transit or other travel venues." His very strongly said this statement he made is "his" personal opinion regarding family only.
I see no problem with VP Biden's statement. His statement is an "at present" a good cautious common sense personal opinion for himself and his family.
Once we have more knowledge about this virus, then more expert medically appropriate care and advice will be implemented. There is a possibility it will be no different than the common flu viruses we normally see. Medical high caution is now present.
