President Obama "Furious" to Hear of Plane Incident
April 27, 2009 5:48 PM
A White House official tells ABC News that President Obama was "furious" to hear about the incident this morning when Air Force One and Air Force fighter jets appeared to be flying into the Manhattan skyline, scaring many New Yorkers into thinking they were about to face another terrorist attack.
Many buildings in lower Manhattan evacuated. Angry New York politicians lashed out at whoever was responsible for the incident -- which turned out to have been for a photo op.
An explanation was forthcoming in a mea culpa statement issued from the White House.
“Last week, I approved a mission over New York," Louis Caldera, director of the White House military office, said. "I take responsibility for that decision. While federal authorities took the proper steps to notify state and local authorities in New York and New Jersey, it’s clear that the mission created confusion and disruption. I apologize and take responsibility for any distress that flight caused.”
When President Obama was told about the incident, he was "furious," a White House official says.
Caldera was called into a meeting with White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel and deputy chief of staff Jim Messina.
"It didn't sound like a fun meeting," the White House official says.

"When one of the President's jets is out of service, many authorized contingency plans are put into place. These are not normal, everyday jets. They are always on the ready to carry our President in any situation. You can bet without a doubt that Obama was briefed as to what was going on. It's infuriating how he keeps getting a pass with this "I didn't know" garbage. Let's face it folks, if he didn't know he's incompetent. If he did know, he's corrupt. Either way, we're getting screwed! The press needs to start doing its job".
EXACTLY!!!
What did this cost $300K-$400K?Unbelievable with how the economy is struggling, people out of jobs, families losing their homes. What a JOKE! I'd like to really know who was on that plane.

I guess this is what happens when we rely on Democrats in the White house--people get scared because things do not happen as planned...ever

Has anyone wondered if it might be Obama's daughters that were going for a trip to see the statue on our dime (cost almost $400K) because their daddy is president. Honestly... it wasn't just a
'presidential jet', it was one of only two planes known as Air Force One... Yeah that plane. Obama's plane. I smell a coverup. Obama was furious that it made the news and made him look bad... I bet it was his idea.

The truth lies in the passenger manifest at Andrews Air Force Base. Common ABC...just ask the question: Who was on the plane?

Best commentary i've seen about this...why would they need a photo op?
Posted by: lazydays | May 5, 2009 7:15:46 AM
Firstly, if you need to film or photo shoot Air Force 1 juxtaposed to the Statue of Liberty, there is absolutely no need to do this in situ. Both subjects can be filmed or photographed and matted together electronically.
The only conspiracy I can think of is that it was a warning to the American public that 911 could happen again, that the terrorists are still at large. It coincides with the extra 10,000 US troops going to Afghanistan and could bolster public support for this.

You asked the absolutely correct question:
"why would somebody do something like that without full and absolute approval?"
And I am quite willing to bet that it was done with the "full and absolute approval" of the President.
The Administration tried to say it was to update their photo file.
That, Nicholas, is a big fat lie.
No one takes AF-1 on a "joy-ride" around Manhattan and New Jersey without having a very good and fully approved reason, period. Oh, they may have been taking photos . . . that is a virtual certainty.
But updating the photo file was NOT the reason for the flight.
The real reason is what they are covering up. and if they won't tell the truth about it, we're going to speculate about it.
The only suggestion I've heard so far that makes any sense at all, is the one about taking a group of supporters on the flight, perhaps as a reward for their help in the campaign, or, as a way to raise campaign funds for the future.
Or, BOTH!

No, it was probably NOT a fun meeting.
I'll also bet that the discussion turned quickly to the REAL reason why that flight was taken, and why that information can never, ever come out publicly!
Jim Messina being put in charge of the "internal investigation" tells me that the reason for the flight was not one people would tolerate. He is now the official White House gargoyle on this story. It must NEVER get past him . . . EVER!
Congressman Weiner called everyone involved -- from top to bottom -- a bunch of "boneheads." But you don't hear him calling for public hearings, now do you?
Well, why not? Aren't we all entitled to know the real truth about why this flight was taken?
I personally want to see a few of the principals involved put under oath and specifically asked exactly who was on that flight.

What if this would have been an enemy plane? Aren't they supposed to shoot them down?? He had to have known what was going on. If this would have been GW it would be the only thing in the news and internet.

now that i have actually read the other comments, why the hell would u do something like this? i mean im only 15, but even a baby would have more common sence then that. seriously, 911 is still recent! THINK FOR ONCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

why would somebody do something like that without full and absolute approval? does america have ANY common sence?

Dear Louis Caldera, i hope that the 300k dollars it's going to cost the tax payers is going to come out of your pocket and not mine! what a stupid idea, very tactless, and inconsiderate. anytime i see a plane fly over the city i think of 9/11. i would be happy if you my friend were out of a job at the end of today. P.S. use Photoshop next time!

I love all the ignorant comments on here. Nothing irrelevant - just bitter, slams from anxious Republicans.
"Well...your poodle is now a puddle."
Oh, ok. Thanks for clarifying. Problem solved, guys! He wasn't a poodle. He was a puddle. It's all so clear, now...

I can't believe our government would even THINK of doing a flyover on lower Manhatten. I wonder who the hell in Washington would even think of doing something as stupid as this and think Ah It Will Be Great...No Problem...If you want to do a photo op. on a National Landmark. Go do a flyover on Mt.Rushmore or The Grand Canyon...I just blows my mind to think that this was o.k. to do Mayor Bloomberg should let his opinion fly out of his mouth and not worry about being politically correct or pissing off someone in Washington...This is your City be censored when you speak

Never have written to a blog or for that matter any internet website…….but this stupidity of flying over NYC in the Air Force One jet…plus two “F whatevers” brings out the anger in me!
This is not only stupid…but given the reasons for doing it…I would say it is borderline insane!
Can you imagine what the New York Times editorial would print if this was a Bush Administration gaff? Don’t think so. If the editorial page writers do an editorial blasting the “Oh Bama” underlings….I will personally donate $10,000 to the New York Times Neediest cases…..
I think this is a safe bet!
p.s. I think Bloomberg should fire the idiot who didn’t tell him about the “exercise”….both in the N.Y.P.D. and his “Event” staff director.

Obama is probably just hallucinating because of his swine flu. There were no planes.

Last week Obama wanted it done.... now, "he never knew anything about it and is furious."
That's typical of this piece of garbage in the Oval Office.

I wonder how much this "photo shoot" cost?
They could've probably paid a high school kid $100 to create that whole thing on a computer. =\
