President Obama 'Pleased' But 'Not Satisfied' With Administration's Progress
April 29, 2009 2:14 PM
ABC News' Rachel Martin and Karen Travers report:
ARNOLD, Mo. -- The marquee outside of the Fox School in Arnold, Missouri reads: “Character Trait of the month of April: A Positive Attitude.” It’s an appropriate welcome message for President Obama on his 100th day in office. And he seemed to take it to heart as he addressed the packed gymnasium in Arnold. He ticked off what he considers to be the accomplishments of his administration, everything from the economic stimulus package to the equal pay for women act.
"We have begun to pick ourselves up and dust ourselves off, and we've begun the work of remaking America," Obama said at a town hall event in Arnold. “I'm pleased with the progress we've made but I'm not satisfied.”
Obama defended his ambitious and costly agenda by noting that he inherited serious problems that required immediate action.
“We've got a lot of work to do because on our first day in office, we found challenges of unprecedented size and scope,” he said. “These challenges could not be met with half measures. They couldn't be met with the same, old formulas. They couldn't be confronted in isolation. They demanded action that was bold and sustained.”
And while he rebuffed critics who say he’s taken on too much, the president acknowledged his limitations. “And you know that progress comes from hard choices and hard work, not miracles. I'm not a miracle worker. We've got a lot of tough choices, and hard decisions, and hard work ahead of us."
Obama went through a list of campaign promises that his administration has taken action on, including steps to get the economy back on track, ending the war in Iraq and harsh interrogation techniques and closing the detention center at Guantanamo Bay.
“The priorities that we've acted upon were the things that we said we'd do during the campaign,” he said. “The changes that we've made are the changes we promised."
Obama took just six questions that spanned a variety of issues –- the auto bailout, foreign policy, and education reform. He spoke about paying good teachers more and on the flip side: "If you've got a bad teacher who can't, after given all the support and the training that they need, is just not performing up to snuff, we've got to find that person a new job."
But he spent a lot of time talking about health care, urging Congress to get a reform package on his desk by the end of the year.
“The Recovery Package put a huge amount in prevention. We are in our budget calling for significant increases in prevention. And my hope is, is that, working in a bipartisan fashion, we are going to be able to get a health care reform bill on my desk before the end of the year that will start seeing the kinds of investments that will make everybody healthier.”
In a lighter moment, one of the audience members who asked a question about alternative medicine told the president that she was an acupuncturist and massage therapist.
“I could use one right now,” Obama said. “My back’s stiff. I’ve been working hard.”
“I’ll be happy to help you,” Mary Wallis said.
Obama told the crowd of enthusiastic supporters in this suburb of St. Louis that his last visit to Missouri was two days before Election Day, one final push to try and flip the red state to blue.
“Some folks were surprised that we showed up in Springfield at the end of our campaign,” he said.
Missouri was the closest state in last year’s presidential election –- Obama lost to Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., by just under 4000 votes.
“We were here in Missouri at the end of a long journey to the White House, and so now I want to come back and speak to you at the beginning of another long journey,” the president said.
One hundred days down -- only 1,361 left to go.

For all Obama apologists, you have to admit there is quite a lot of grumbling among the ranks... and it's only been 100 days. I expect to see a lot of changed attitudes before the year is out. His scolding of those who don't agree with him will turn on you. How will he address you when your moral outrage swells up over his state secrets stance that mimic Bush Policy? I hope to see your outrage on this blog, but sadly I assume there will be some twisting of truth that the evil of Bush into something necessary for Obama.

From the Washington Examiner:
"Those who refuse to learn from history are doomed to repeat it, said George Santayana, the philosopher. But this familiar maxim is being ignored this week by President Barack Obama and his fellow Democrats on Capitol Hill this week as they complete action on the chief executive’s proposed 2010 federal budget. With its unprecedented deficit approaching $2 trillion, this budget proposal is a certain prescription for hyper-inflation. So every senator and representative who votes for this monster $3.6 trillion budget will be endorsing actions that will turn America into the next Weimar Republic. For those too young to remember, that was the period in Germany in the years between the two world wars when people needed wheelbarrows full of money to buy a loaf of bread."

obamablessedone should have gone into entertainment...that conference was pathetic. And to the hand picked journalists who were the chosen ones to ask questions...were those hand delivered from the potus? Not one question on the economy...shameful.

"Ms. California, how do you feel about gay marriage?"
"President Obama, what is the most enchanting thing that's happened to you in the last 100 days?"
slobber, slobber, slobber
This is pathetic.

Most of our troubles today are not Obama's doing, but Obama's initial solutions are so far off the mark, waiting for 2 or 3 years to see if it works is not good enough. Our country has been failing since Ronald Regan introduced NAFTA to Congress. After many years of haggling in Congress it was passed under Bush I, then signed by Clinton. As far as I am concerned our great country was brought down by our own government. It started with Carter, followed by Regan, Bush I, Clinton, Bush II, and now Obama. They all mismanaged our country into the mess we are in today. Obama's solutions are so far off the mark we won't see any improvement in our economic situation and because he just spent almost one trillion dollars beefing up all levels of government (city, state, and federal) he just magnified our problems by creating an even larger tax burden on our people in the future. Federal and state tax receipts have fallen dramatically in the past 3 months, retail sales have literally crashed and are continuing lower, unemployment in the private sector has been ignored by Obama's trillion dollar stimulus, illegal immigrants CONTINUE to cross our STILL OPEN BORDERS, durable goods and factory orders are in the tank, foreclosures on homes continues to rise, bankruptcies and businesses moving their operations over seas continues, unemployment continues to grow, crime is escalating, etc., etc., and you say give him time. No, we don't have time and we can't afford it. Time is critical and everything he has done to date has not changed the direction of our economy one bit. If we continue on this path the crash of 1929 is going to look like a picnic compared to what is going to happen to America.

"Not really since the Fed notes the problems with mortgages and unemployment which are big parts of the stim."
Which parts of the "stimulus" package have to do with mortgages- exactly, Ryan?
How much is for unemployment and how much is "refundable tax credits" for those how pay no taxes now?
What does paying unemployment benefits do to stimulate the economy?
When has any "stimulus" package ever worked?

soconfused:" I'm sure all those happy home buyers are public employees, teachers, firefighters or the Cal Trans workers building the freeways! "
I don't want to get into a battle of anecdotes here, but from my direct experience that's just not true.

Hey, Obie's doing a good job. Nice to have a president that can talk.
Just don't like what he's saying.
Jake, people are loose when discussing "torture" vs. "harsh interrogation". The two are different, and politicians are leaving themselves plenty of wiggle room as to where they draw the line. Outlawing harsh interrogation leaves you with a terrorist detainee who essentially has the right to remain silent.
Obama uses the two terms interchangeably (incorrectly). He has ordered all agencies to use the DoD and military's own guidelines - the Army Field Manuel -- but there are "harsh" techniques there, too. It's still not clear where he stands.

Jhw539: The Bay Area unemployment is the highest in the state. I personally know engineers, architects and lawyers who are laying off all their employees. I'm sure all those happy home buyers are public employees, teachers, firefighters or the Cal Trans workers building the freeways! What new jobs have been created under the chosen "One".???? Oh that's right the $10 hr jobs installing insulation that Obama brags about.

jhw, you didn't specify which fact you were talking about. None of the facts is unverifiable. Don't even try the Republican Deadender routine. Flattery will get you nowhere.
The Taliban have indeed gained alarming amounts of territory, and Iraq's drawdown was planned under Bush. All Obama has to do is step in front of the parade. Check Bill Roggio on the blow-by-blow between Taliban and Pak Army. Check ABC news to find countries that have volunteered to take detainees.
And I hope this isn't going to be another therapy session from Dr. Oprah Obama to fix our broken souls and teach empathy. We're empathizing just fine, and don't need the government to to teach us to act like a community. Americans volunteer and help all the time, without Obama's enforcement.
While I'm at it, why did he propose doing away with the tax deduction for charitable donations? Why do away with the successful charter school program in DC? Why propose that vets pay for their own combat related medical care? Why did the administration propose ideas like this? They seem inconsistent with his larger stated goals.

"No matter the facts or common knowledge such as political polls being known to be inaccurate they spin their BS and expect everyone to buy it."
You did not offer a single fact.
Claiming it as common knowledge doesn't change that.
"When that doesn't work, they resort to smears and belittle others"
Its not a smear to state that you have no idea what you are talking about.

"Which would mean that Obama was absolutely dead wrong about the need to explode the deficit."
Not really since the Fed notes the problems with mortgages and unemployment which are big parts of the stim.

You know I love the bots...Not. No matter the facts or common knowledge such as political polls being known to be inaccurate they spin their BS and expect everyone to buy it. When that doesn't work, they resort to smears and belittle others. This is a typical socialist tact and should never be tolerated.

I keep looking at the information being put out by my state and do not see a flood of new jobs being created. Every thing seems to be directed towards entitlement programs and not jobs. Citizens need the programs but what they need are jobs and if necessary training which they can count on for years to come.

drjohn:"What grinds Obama supporters (because they are the beneficiaries of the work of others) is that America sucks "
What a crock. I think America is the best country in the world, and am more than willing to defend it against the radical right who seems to think Somalia-like anarchy would be superior.
And I'm amazed by your arrogance to think you are not the beneficiary of the work of others. I know that I have my cushy life thanks to the work of others: My parents, a particularly good English teach in 11th grade (thanks Mr Curtis), most of the UW Engineering college staff from 1995-1998 (RIP Professor Calkins)- heck, even Cheech, my mechanic who was instrumental in getting my Porsche 951 track worthy.
I live in a modern world and am proud to rely on others and have them rely on me. Kinda the basis of modern society as we know it actually.

"So things ARE worsening, but just not worsening quite as fast. What Orwellian nonsense. You just keep on spinning like an Iranian centrifuge."
All I said was the Fed is seeing signs that the recession is ebbing.
"-just like FDR dragged out the Depression for years"
In the first 4 years of FDR's spending unemployment dropped from 25% to 10%.
When FDR ratcheted back government spending, unemployment crept back up a bit to about 17% in 1937 before dipping again to about 13 or 14% in 1940.
"and years with his spending sprees until WWII ended it"
And how did World War 2 end the Depression?
Why thru MASSIVE government spending and a government controlled economy including rationing, price and wage fixes.
Get some new material.
