President Obama Addresses American 'Arrogance,' European 'Anti-Americanism'

April 03, 2009 8:41 AM

STRASBOURG, France -- At a town hall meeting here before a mix of French and German citizens, President Obama just discussed problems between the U.S. and Europe.

"In America there's a failure to appreciate Europe's leading role in the world," President Obama said. "Instead of celebrating your dynamic union and seeking to partner with you, there have been times America's shown arrogance, been dismisive even derisive."

Continued the president: "But in Europe there is an anti-Americanism that is at once casual and insidious. Instead of recognizing the good that America does in the world," Europeans have sometimes chosen instead "to blame America for much of what is bad."

Both of these attitudes "do not represent the truth," he said.

"America is changing but it cannot be America alone that changes."

President Obama is here for a NATO summit.

i wondered on why President Obama has to defend the United States as being arrogant. in the world of Science, Unites States has every reason to be arrogant, for the fact that no other country i am aware of is as strict in publishing legitimate scientific data in their Scientific Journals as the United States. nevertheless, in the name of Democracy, it is important to come to terms with other Democratic Nations for the common good of the World.

Arrogant? Humm. America men and women have bleed on just about every continent in the world, provided aid, stood beside those who could not defend themselves - namely Europe, donated food, helped organize government, spent countless billions of dollars across the world. Americans ARROGANT? I can't remember any American President good or bad that would say such a thing.

WOW--with a President like this who needs enemies???

I am angered by Obama's speech that Americans are "arrogant". Sounds to me like he DID listen to Rev Wright in church all those years when he said "God Damn America" instead of God Bless America. This president needs to be impeached!

President Obama is right. The last government was very arrogant. Europe owes United States a lot of good but when Vice President Cheney was told about all the wrong that was happening around, his answer was "SO". This is just one example of the many instances of arrogance shown by the prior government like when they accepted ordering tortures in Guantanamo.

JWF : you are EXACTLY RIGHT.
Obama calling us arrogant is a laugh. He is the epitome of narcissistic/arrogance and he disgusts me. It is SHAMEFUL and the American people should be outraged.

BTW... It is truly amazing to me that anyone can call her a fashion icon. She looks DREADFUL, and the look on her face is one of hate. (I read some of the thesis she wrote while at Princeton)
She has a bad attitude.

THE OBAMAS ARE LAME.

This is intolarable, that a president that we elected would go oversees and insult americia in this fashion is the worst thing that we have had in terms of leadership since Benidict arnold lead the US. army. THere is nothing that we have done that makes us more arrogant than european nations. The idiotic president that would say this has obviously no national pride. Do we want such a non- patriot to lead us, I think NOT.

Seems to me that he is campaining for world leader. So far he holds titles of "Community Organizer in Chief", "Apoligizer in Chief", "Blamer in Chief", "Spender in Chief", "Delegator in Chief", and the list could go on. He is just getting us ready to accept rule by the UN since we are now being made equal to Europe and the rest of the world. Soon other countries will own our government as they hold most of our debt and soon they will call those debts. We will get placed in severship controlled by the IMF or UN and then assets will be sold off to the highest bidder. The new top lawyer in the stsate department will be glad to move that along. Now how is that for a cnspiracy theory? Now prove it is not possible by reading and research.

With respect to the Office of the Presidency, it is from the person, I see a lack of respect for the pedigree of governments and the people. In all governments around the world, there are differences, yet there are PEOPLE in their own respective nations born into a chain of generations that have fought to protect the values and interest of their sovereignty, while being denied rights as citizens. No man shall turn that page.

Every nation holds its greatness, not just America. No man shall turn that page. The greatness of every country must be at the forefront, yet being responsible and accountable for the errors that affected other nations. It is incumbent upon all great nations to correct their errors, not ask a world of nations to absorb the damages caused by one nation. No man shall turn that page.

Was Jessie Jackson right about Barack Obama?

The comments by Obama on American arrogance are some of the most embarrassing ever uttered by a sitting president (past president like Carter continues to spew such). He placed himself in the Dixie Chicks category.....had to say what he did overseas.

Europes Leading Role?
Europe hasn't had a "leading role"
since we saved them from Hitler and
the Nazis! Learn some history,
Mr President.
I wasn't aware of the fact that
the president has joined the
"Blame America First" crowd.
If that Boob, Joe Biden wasn't VP with
Nancy Pelosi next in line, I would
suggest that President Obama stay
in Europe with his friends and fans!
But having Joe Biden as president or
Nancy Pelosi as president is too
scary a thought!
2012 can't come soon enough,
Mr Carter, I mean Mr Obama.

From the Humility Department of the present Admistration: The Americans is a Nation of Cowards . Americans are Arrogants. The Americans are..... Well what they really mean is that we the american people should continually keep giving the other cheek so in this servil attitude, our democratic friends feel goooood...I personally can assured any of my fellow americans that our dear country is the best gift to any free soul in this very unjust world,a world full of white sepulchers. If you have any doubt you can ask every single soul running from opppresive tyrants (from the right or from left). Amen. May God Bless America the compassionate nation .

Obama's success on this trip, and the warm reception to Michelle, make me very satisfied that he is the president we elected. Rather than the clueless dude with the ice cold wife from the party that can't stand reporters who don't use as much product in their hair as Boehner.

Obama failed to get the NATO countries to send combat troops to help us fight in Afghanistan. The British have offerred up to 700 troops to help with elections and the Spanish are sending about a dozen trainers. The French, hosts to Obama today, offered nothing.

This means we will send our men and women to the battlefield by the thousands without additional support from our "allies'. America again will do the heavy lifting with the Canadiens and the Brits there now.

"Interstate highways are paid for with federal tax $$."

As should interstate train systems.

Posted by: Ryan C | Apr 3, 2009 7:25:07 PM

"BTW, that $8Billion in the stimulus for maglev train from Vegas to Orange County was a slick way to earmark federal funds to both Cal and Nevada for that project."

Ahhh still repeating that debunked talking point huh?

Not surprising, its not like you think for yourself or anything.

What the bill contains is $8 billion in funding for unspecified high speed rail projects (skip to p. 237 for the relevant section). The money is to be allocated by the secretary of transportation. A DOT spokesperson told us that it is “premature to speculate” about what exactly will be funded. Even vigilant pork-busting budget watchdogs agree that the "levitating train earmark" charge is without merit: Taxpayers for Common Sense, a nonpartisan group that scours legislation for earmarks, told us that there is "no way that this provision is an earmark for Sen. Reid."

ryan-

Local, State, and Federal government. Local roads, state roads, Federal roads (ie, I95, I20, I40).
