A Memorial Day Goal for Bob and Lee Woodruff
May 23, 2009 2:59 PM
I received the following email today from my friend Lee Woodruff, and thought I'd pass it on:
"Hey Friends -- Would you give a dollar to someone who risked their life for you? We are in a big push this weekend to try to get every American to give $1.00 (or better yet $5.25 - to signify the date of Memorial Day) to help our wounded troops. This is what Memorial Day is all about.
"Yesterday by being on CNN and CNBC to talk about it-- Bob and I raised $21,000 just from people twittering and going to the website to give."
You may recall that Bob suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) while covering the Iraq War. The Bob Woodruff Foundation iworks to provide resources and support to injured service members, veterans and their families, and he hopes to raise $1.65 million by Memorial Day, May 25 -- representing the 1.65 million troops who have been deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan.
More on his foundation can be found HERE. It focuses especially on the 320,000 veterans who have sustained traumatic brain injuries and the more than 300,000 who have sustained psychological wounds.
Lee reminds us that "while we are kicking back this Memorial Day - there are thousands of men and women overseas serving their country, putting themselves in harms way. It doesn't matter if you support the war or not--- we are asking you to support the warrior when he or she comes home injured and forever altered."
One way they're doing this campaign is on twitter through the "Tweet to ReMIND" campaign, asking twitterers to tweet their support for www.tweettoremind.org, asking people to donate $5.25 (or whatever they want to give) to ReMIND.org, and asking twitterers to become a follower of @remind_org on twitter to gain updates -- and retweet and spread the word..
(Sample tweet: Please RT & answer @remind_org: Who is your hero? Please donate $5.25 to
support our troops. http://bit.ly/remind #tweettoremind)
"Thank you and have a great Memorial Day weekend!
"- Lee and Bob Woodruff"
A very worthy cause.

ABC will not allow a link to be posted, but I encourage you to look up GCS Distributing and watch their tribute video We support U.
It puts Memorial Day into perspective.

Done!
I didn't retweet, because I think everyone who follows me follows Jake Tapper. I'm not an exciting tweeter.
This was great of the Woodruffs to do this. So admirable.

Thank you Jake - I donated even tho I have no income, no retirement, no soc sec, only 1/3 of my IRA as of 2 yrs ago, NO descendants who fought in any war since the Revolutionary War and maybe not even then, because the ones I know about were colonial clergy. Plus I haven't liked Woodruff since Watergate. I put him in the same ballpark as Dan Rather. He's good as long as it fits his perspective.
If I worked, I'd rather have my taxes go to veterans programs.
So what's the story? What's up with the VA and taking care of vets? How come every administration since Kennedy (my 1st) says they're going to do , do, .. whatever for our veterans, but it seems that it doesn't get done. How come? Is there an investigative piece here? Or just a why?
PS - re:my finances - hopefully its not that bad - I'm like many wives,females so I live off my girlfriend (SO) for a while. ;=}

I was all ready to donate $5.25 when I read the mission statement and decided to go ahead and give $50.
My Dad, also a WWII vet, passed away last year. He was a Purple Heart veteran, having taken schrapnel through both legs while serving as an army medic.
I'm fairly certain he would have benefitted from counseling for PTSD, too, but that was a different time.
I miss you Pops. Thanks, Jake.

Thanks Jake. I donate my $5.25 in memory of my father who served in WWII in the Navy and was a proud American. Always had his flag flying.
