POTUS: $17 Billion is 'A Lot of Money'

May 07, 2009 11:24 AM

DeniesABC News' Yunji de Nies reports:

Speaking in Eisenhower Executive Office building this morning, President Obama touted the $17 billion in budget cuts as a step toward building, "a government of the 21st century –- a government that is more efficient and more effective. A government that does what we need it to do –- and nothing we don’t."

Flanked by the Office of Management and Budget's (OMB) Peter Orszag and Rob Nabors, the president said Americans are tightening their belts and making tough decisions and that Washington must do the same.

"We can no longer afford to spend as if deficits do not matter and waste is not our problem," Obama said.

The president laid out a number of examples of the more than 100 programs that will face cuts or termination, saying that many of them were outdated or ineffective.

The $17 billion in cuts add up to roughly one half of one percent of the $3.55 trillion budget. Still, the president said the savings are significant.

"These savings, large and small, add up. The 121 budget cuts we are announcing today will save taxpayers nearly $17 billion next year alone. That’s a lot of money, even by Washington standards," he said.

The president also spoke about other areas where his administration will save money, including healthcare, defense and the elimination of no-bid government contracts.

"All told, by the end of my first term we will cut the deficit in half. Over the next decade we’ll bring non-defense discretionary spending to its lowest level as a share of Gross Domestic Product since 1962. We will also continue to look for ways we can save taxpayers money. And I know there are many in both parties in Congress committed to cutting spending and eager to work with us."

An interesting article in the Canada Free Press: THE PRESIDENT WHO HATES HIS COUNTRY.

Too bad the news in our own country won't tell you the truth. We have to read on line news from CANADA and foreign countries to get some form of truthful news.

To clean up the Messes of the last 8 years, that cost money. This is why the Republicans did what they did. Leaving this mess for the president...But I know that 17 billion dollars is a lot of money....and nickles add to dimes and dimes add up to quarters, quarters add to halves, and then a whole. Start "whacking", Mr. President, to finally put our country on solid ground. Thanks.

Yes you are pure idiot to think $15b is no money. In a 14 trillion economy $3.5 trillion is not enough to stimulate it.

After bush doubled the national debt to $10 trillion by fighting a war based on lies and cutting taxes for corporate friends, where did you expect Obama to get money to stimulate the economy here in America.

Wonder what the interest is on 3.55 T? Seventeen Billion in cuts also lends to thousands of loss jobs which in turn lead to lost tax revenue...so 17 B in cuts really amounts to nothing..won't even cover the interest on 3.55 T..Yes, Bravo Mr. President...NOT

This is a good beginning. I think we'll see more as time goes by, but I am very pleased that a prominent politician at least began the process. I'm appalled that there are people in congress who are so small minded that they would fight to cling to these programs when they are such a waste of tax payer money and so ineffective. Time to clean house. I'm tired of politicians who pander for votes instead of doing their jobs which is to take care of the country. No more special interest pork. If a healthy for profit company wouldn't invest in these programs, then they need to go. Bravo Mr. President for making a start!

""THE DEMS ARE SPENDING LOTS AND LOTS OF OUR MONEY."

"Things that need to be fixed cost money.
I don't think there is enough free duct tape in TWO worlds to fix everything Bush broke"
DUMBEST COMMENT EVER. So you think Bush 'broke' things by not spending enough? Even though he doubled Dept of Education spending, added a medicare entitlement and increased spending overall? Now the Democrats are doubling down on that, with a failed approach to massively increase spending by double digits per year, increasing deficits and taxes. Now over $1 trillion this year alone. Obama is spending $3,500 billion this year. He has proposed literally trillions in new spending initatives. We will have taxpayer funded abortions in DC, a huge new healthcare entitlement, more spending on domestic issues, on top of one trillion in Government pork spending mis-labelled as 'stimulus'.

THE ONLY THING THIS WILL "FIX" IS ANY "EXCESS" IN PROSPERITY. WE ARE ENSURING THE NEXT GENERATION WILL BE POORER AND IN DEBT TO FOREIGN BONDHOLDERS.OBAMA LIED, JOBS DIED.

I knew you'd come after the very programs and ......why bother? This site will cut this run anyway because I am talking about the "BELOVED" Barry; Mister I Can't Do No Wrong!
My son wants to join the Marines but I'll do my best to keep him out while Barry runs amok with his cuts to the DOD!!
The military is no place for Social Engineering!!

Remember during the campaign when McCain wanted to stop all pork spending which was supposedly around $6 billion, and Obama said that wasn’t really that much money so what’s the big deal?

Ah, those were the days, eh?

Note he’s comparing the 18 billion to 300 billion in McCain’s tax plan. Now 17 billion is a big deal against 3 trillion.

Tammy, Your post makes me ask, can the current administration be charged with hate crimes against the American people?

Posted by: Sam | May 7, 2009 4:08:54 PM

jhw, well, if we are measuring, my spouse and I also paid several multiples of 11,133.33 in federal taxes last year. Do I mind paying taxes? Nope. It is indeed a privilege to prosper in the best nation on earth and thus to have the resources to qualify to pay those taxes. However, as Hyena, my hero, pointed out, much of America does not pay even a fraction of 11 thousand. The burden is unevenly spread-- and that is as it should be, to a degree. Yes, those of us who have higher incomes can and should afford to pay a higher percentage of that income in taxes.

However, every dollar any of us pays is precious and should be spent wisely, whoever is in office. The fact that I can afford to pay the level of taxes I pay does not mean that I do not miss it when the money leaves my account or that I do not care deeply about how the government spends that money. And it does not mean that raising my taxes higher will not have a negative impact on my spending patterns and my business decisions, and so can be done lightly, because high earners like myself "can afford it."

Scott, I hear over and over that the spending is necessary to "fix" what is "broken." But, first of all, we do not seem to agree on what is in need of repair and whether the proposed fix will be effective. In addition, we have to prioritize and to recognize that we cannot afford, as a nation, to do every good thing we might like to do because we, as a nation, can not afford it at this time. It is just like a family budget, as the president said today (although in the context of his remarks, the analogy made me want to throw something heavy at the television screen-- more some other time when my paper grading gets closer to done). Sometimes there are things that would be a good investment but you lack the resources to make that investment. Families actually make those sorts of "hard choices" that the president claims the government is and will be making. I want to see that happen, but so far, that is not what is happening.

Scott, What is President Obama "fixing".

The climate? His global warming bill will cost the the average American $3000 more in energy costs and do nothing to reduce co2.

The Car Industry: They are going bankrupt, thousands of jobs are being lost, Chevrolet is being handed over to Fiat, and President Obama is using mafia like tactics to strong arm bond holders to give up their legal rights so his favored few Union workers gets most of the spoils.

The Health Care Industry: President Obama wants to put them out of business to "level the playing field" so everyone will get little or bad health care as dictated by some government bureaucrat.

RE: U.S. PUBLIC DEBT

Sirs,

While we have enjoyed your significant fiancial support over the past decade in the form of purchases of our public debt, I would like to ask for a pause in the purchase of future U.S. bond offerings. While I am sensitive that this pause will impact the PRC's strategy to gain ever-increasing influence over U.S. policy (witnessed by Sec. of State Clinton's communication to you that the U.S. will no longer apply pressure to the PRC regarding human rights violations), we are led by a President who is intent on re-making the U.S. towards a Marxist state. Not so long ago, this radical move would have been viewed as a validation of the PRC's Central Planning system, but today's PRC is a believer in capitalism. Given the intertwining of our economies it is not in the best interests of either economy for the PRC to continue to lend us money. We are irresponsible and we are not a worthy investment. You have already provided warning - I now would respectively ask that you discontinue all purchases of U.S. Treasuries until we demonstrate that we can be trusted.

Best regards,

American Taxpayer

President Obama is trying to con the public into thinking he is fiscally frugal while spending the US into the poor house. Another President Obama con game is his global warming bill spear headed by Congressman Waxman.

The facts are "... looking at the Waxman-Markey Climate Bill that is now being considered by Congress, CO2 emissions from the U.S. in the year 2050 are proposed to be 83% less than they were in 2005 ... or a reduction of 4,980mmtCO2 ... [the models say,] even if the entire United States reduced its carbon dioxide emissions by 83% below current levels, it would only amount to a reduction of global warming of less than three-thousandths of a ºC per year. A number that is scientifically meaningless."

Ok Repubs here you go:

"THE DEMS ARE SPENDING LOTS AND LOTS OF OUR MONEY."

Things that need to be fixed cost money.
I don't think there is enough free duct tape in TWO worlds to fix everything Bush broke.

And YES we still blame him because no matter who the next president would have been, his/her job is to fix what's wrong with the country.

Why is that so hard for Repubs to understand?

Break everything in your house, then flood it with water, then start a war with the guy down the street and see how much money the next guy to own your house will have to spend.

3.6 trillion budget and Obama wants the congress to find 17B and calls that success?? Most of us in the sane world are laughing ourselves silly. Only a Liberal would call this progress. At least there is one thing both liberals and conservatives can agree on. Obama is bringing change as he promised and change is all that most of us that work will have left. Here's the facts that you liberals just can't figure out. Obama's plan makes the rich richer and the middle class and working poor poorer. Rich people can dictate where and when to spend their money and support the companies we work by spending their descretionary income. Again, my liberal friends, I have never worked for a poor man and I personally don't know anyone that does. Taking more money from those of us in the middle class just creatre another class of people who cannot get ahead. Then again, in the twisted reality of the Liberal mentality they would rather see everyone fail than anyone succeed so i don't expect them to understand simple economics.

"We can no longer afford to spend as if deficits do not matter and waste is not our problem"

Sounds absolutely Reaganesque... except I think President Obama actually MEANS it!

(...unlike Reagan, who swore all the right shibboleths but nearly tripled the national debt from $907 billion to $2.6 trillion during his term!)
