President Obama to Announce 'Historic' Fuel Efficiency and Carbon Emission Standards for U.S.-Sold Vehicles Tomorrow
May 18, 2009 1:32 PM
President Obama will tomorrow announce a "historic" new policy involving new greenhouse gas emission standards and new Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards for vehicles sold in the U.S., sources tell ABC News.
The announcement will involve a broad coalition including state governments -- Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger from environmentally-conscious California and Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm from auto-friendly Michigan will be there -- as well as both the Department of Transportation and the Environmental Protection Agency, automakers, environmental groups, and others. The announcement was first reported by Politico's Mike Allen.
The Transportation Department will handle the new CAFE standards, while the EPA will handle the new greenhouse gas emission standards. They will be initiated through administrative rulemaking.
On January 26, President Obama issued a presidential memorandum requesting EPA administrator Lisa Jackson to reconsider the Bush EPA's 2007 denial of waiver California and 13 other states sought to set their own, stricter automobile emissions and fuel efficiency standards.
"This will help us create incentives to develop new energy that will make us less dependent on the oil that endangers our security, our economy and our planet," the president said. "As we move forward, we will fully take into account the unique challenges facing the American auto industry and the taxpayer dollars that now support it. And let me be clear: Our goal is not to further burden an already struggling industry; it is to help America's automakers prepare for the future."
He said his administration would implement new CAFE standards for model year 2011.
"Congress has passed legislation to increase standards to at least 35 miles per gallon by 2020," he said. "That 40 percent increase in fuel efficiency for our cars and trucks could save over 2 million barrels of oil every day: nearly the amount of oil that we import from the Persian Gulf."

"So you're saying that this proposition system is a way for the state government of CA to pass the buck?"
For this election today? Certainly.

OJ, wow, you have issues, huh? So everyone HATES Republicans? Here and around the world? Really? I'm sorry to hear that you are so filled with hate that you can't see any point of view but your own.
I came home from vacation this evening and saw this post and knew i had to respond. After all, I have posted on this site as "moderate" for probably close to a year now. And I have never ever hidden my association with the Republican Party-- I am a registered Republican. You seem to equate Republican with conservative, but I would argue that the republican "tent" is as least as big as the democratic one and has room for all sorts.
Your little "challenge" is juvenile and reductionist, but I will take it on anyway lest you crow that the moderates around here are 'ducking' your challenge.
Three times I have agreed with Obama (I'll ignore the "totally" because I rarely "totally" agree with anyone, including myself *G*):
1. The revival of the military tribunals for guantanamo prisoners
2. The decision to continue to fight the release of the pictures sought by the ACLU, reversing earlier statements that they would be released.
3. The appointment of Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State
4. Proposed a credit card rating system.
5. Increased troop levels in Afghanistan.
6. Instituted regular midweek social gatherings at the White House with a mix of people of various political persuasions.
Oh, wait, that's more than 3. And here's three things "the republicans" have done with which I disagreed. (Of course, there's a big problem with this half of the challenge, since the republican party is not, despite your insistence to the contrary, monolithic, and I'm not sure who you feel "the republicans" are.
So what are some things I disagree with more (mostly socially) conservative Republicans about? Well, for openers, I am moderately pro-choice (I wish there were no abortions but do not want to make them illegal). I thought the Terry Schiavo kerfuffle was ridiculous. I have no problem with limiting the sale of guns at gun shows or requiring guns to be registered. I do not think creationism should be taught in school or that alternatives to evolution should be taught. I have mixed feelings about the death penalty. Will that do for starters.
Now stop trashing the republican party and moderates.

I am glad BHO is so smart. He can rewrite the laws of physics and snap his fingers and we can all see the change.

We have that in Georgia now. If it gets any more complex the average consumer can't afford it. And especially newer cars. They should think of household budgets too. Great idea wrong time to do it.

I also say vote no on all proprs because they represent weak political will on the part of the legislature and the governor.

Look who just came out of the right wing closet. That was positively Reaganesque.

If cars all start getting 42 mpg, guess what? Less tax money collected. Gov't will then start doubling taxes on gas and want to put a meter on your car to tax your mileage.

My wife and I raised one daughter. If she drives a SUV which gets 20 mpg and drives it 20,000 miles per year she will use 1000 gallons of gas. A family with 8 kids will eventually grow up. If each of them drive a car which get 50 miles per gallon the same distance they will use 400 gallons of gas each. But there are 8 of them. That equals 3,200 gallons of gas.
As we see decreasing gas consumption while increasing population is simply (pun intended) spinning our wheels.
A family with 18 kids will use 1,600 gallons per 20,000 miles if each of them drive a car which gets 100 mpg!
Go ahead and make heros of those people if you want to. They aren’t part of the problem. They are the problem.

Obama is just attacking pollution the same way it has always been attacked, which so far hasn’t worked. This is change?
There is no way to reduce pollution levels or reduce consumption of natural resources as long a population continue to rise. Simply can’t be done.
Until we encourage population reduction rather than population increase pollution levels will continue to rise. Period. No other way to change it.

===Flying use the same amount of fuel per passenger per mile as driving a Prius.===
Isn't that commercial flying?
Posted by: Axey | May 18, 2009 9:21:45 PM
Haha, they flew! What hypocrites! Oh, wait. Flying use the same amount of fuel per passenger per mile as driving a Prius. Oh. If we had a functional train system that would be a better option. But we don't. Thanks again for that, Republicans.

See link above from Dept. of Energy. US has proven oil reserves of 21B (billion) barrels. US consumes 20.68M (million) barrels of oil per day. If we had to stop all imports, say WWIII breaks out, we have enough oil in the ground to last 1015 days. Thats 2.78 years. At our current consumption rate, even if we discovered a new Prudhoe Bay somewhere, we'd burn through the whole thing in 725 days (after it taking 5-10 years to develop it). Since Prudhoe is double the size of any US reserve found before or since, I'm not holding my breath. Never mind that we only have domestic capacity to process 5M (million) barrels a day, and it would take years to build that up. In 1973 OPEC cut production by 5% and global oil prices went up 4X. What do you think would happen to the US economy if we suddenly had a 75% shortfall in oil supply vs. demand? What if there was a major war on, and most of that small production was reserved for military use? Some people have figured out that as long as we are hooked on oil, the world owns us. Ironic that it takes a democrat to actually take action on this grave national security issue.

Finally !!!
Free our highways of gazzlers. Nobody needs more than 100 horses under hood to commute to work unless he/she is big time overweight. Why carry these tons of SUV metal around? Just get a smaller car and save BIG on gasoline.
Way to go Obama !

Another "historic" announcement. Whenever Obama uses the word "historic" it ends up costing the taxpayers money. LOL
Posted by: CW | May 18, 2009 8:49:25 PM
A litmus test for "moderates":
Ask them to name 3 things Obama has done that they totally agree with and then name 3 things the Republicans have done that they totally disagree with.
Most "moderates" (aka pseudo-Republicans) are able to do neither.
Moderates are Republicans that are ashamed to be called Republican ,mainly because everyone ,here and globally HATES Republicans.

"They are flying people in from all over the world? To discuss reducing carbon emissions?"
Do you expect them to all take sailboats to set a good example?
Posted by: Skip | May 18, 2009 8:40:34 PM
On second thought, it is even funnier than I originally thought. They are flying in for the announcement. LOL.
"Auto executives are flying into Washington from around the world for the White House announcement."

They are flying people in from all over the world? To discuss reducing carbon emissions? This is probably the most hillarious thing I've read yet.
