Sec. Clinton Announces $110 Million In Aid To Pakistan
May 19, 2009 12:48 PM
ABC News' Yunji de Nies reports:
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced today that the United States will give $110 million in humanitarian aid to Pakistan.
"We face a common threat, a common challenge and now a common task," Clinton said.
Secretary Clinton said the U.S. military will be involved in delivering many of the relief supplies that this money will pay for, but is not engaged in any military action on the ground in Pakistan. All of these funds will go to relief agencies and non-governmental organizations and will be used to pay for food, water and shelter for that country's most needy.
"I think it is fair to say that our policy toward Pakistan over the last 30 years has been incoherent. I don't know any other word to use," she said. The secretary said that the Obama administration is pursuing a new approach toward the country that is "qualitatively different."
"The humanitarian relief is the right thing to do, no matter what the politics," she added.
Mrs. Clinton also unveiled a new text messaging campaign where Americans can text the word "SWAT" to the number 20222 to contribute $5 to the United Nations Humanitarian Council on Refugees. She said that she had just left the State Department, where they tried out the number and made their own donations, and encouraged the public to do the same.
"Just think, if a million people in the United States gave $5, that would be $5 million," she said.
Mrs. Clinton was also asked about her husband's new appointment to as the United Nations Special Envoy for Haiti. The secretary smiled and said, "I think Ban Ki-moon has chosen a high profile envoy to raise the visibility of the needs of the people of Haiti."

we need all the goodwill we can send to allow mothers, babies and all refugees to regain their human rights as citizens of one planet!

I think the text campaign is a way of doing that, she is encouraging individual citizens to contribute so that she doesn't spend more tax money. Humanitarian aid is a form of National Security, it can be good for us. For more on this story check out this video it has more sources:

This is crap; stop helping other countries and help our own; we have people living in thier cars, on the streets. Families struggling each week to provide for their own. When will the government see this and help out the USA. We have and still continue to take in the hungry and the poor from other countries; it is time to stop and help our own. Maybe those in the government should take a pay cut or get laid off or lose their benefits; maybe then their tunes will change. Thank God my father is not here to see this.

I don't understand why America needs to keep bailing out everyone?? Our country is going down the toilet, businesses are closing, highest unemployment in 25 years and we have to bail out someone else! Charity begins at home, so stop helping out everyone else in the world. Keep the money here to help out Americans!

I hope that this money is coming out of our yearly donation to the United Nations. We as a country can ill afford to just give 110 million dollars to a country for displaced residents, the same people who have been living with and supporting the Taliban.

Shouldn't pakistan be using its own money to support itself instead of buying nukes? Thanks Obama for helping Pakistan arm with more nukes.

Oh geez, can't you kool aid drinkers follow the bouncing ball. Obama (who finally admitted we are broke) has been throwing millions upon millions of US $$$ at his fellow muslim socialists since taking office. Again Obama who somehow managed to get into pakistan while in college and who has been using the US military to attack its muslim socialists presidents enemies now gives them millions $$$$ after giving Hamas millions $$$$$ of taxpayer money. Funny what he considers so important to throw millions upon millions at.

I think it's fair to say that this blog is dominated by right wing ideologues. Of course, it doesn't reflect their proportion in the country. They're basically an angry, embittered minority -- that's easy to discern from their verbiage along with party and issue polling.

What happened to representing the people, washington should not be allowed to just give anything away and make decisions without the people voting, Americans need to get their country back!! Its our tax dollars they are wasting and someone needs to be accountable before Obama destroys our country completely.
