Obama v. The Fly: “I got the sucker”

June 17, 2009 10:28 AM

Travers ABC News' Karen Travers reports:

President Obama sat down yesterday for two interviews to tee up his major announcement on the most sweeping financial regulatory reforms since the Great Depression.

But what are cable newsies talking about from those interviews?

An errant drysophila melangaster and the president's killing thereof.

During an interview with CNBC’s John Harwood in the East Room of the White House yesterday, Obama was defending his administration’s intervention approach to the financial crisis.

But a pesky fly kept buzzing about, distracting him.

The president paused in the middle of his answer, stared down the fly that had landed on his left hand and gave it a fatal slap.

He got it.

“Nice,” Harwood said. (Not the first time a member of the news media praised the president.)

“Now, where were we?" Mr. Obama continued. "That was pretty impressive, wasn't it? I got it. I got the sucker."

According to one person in the room, after the cameras stopped rolling, Obama grabbed a napkin, scooped the fly off of its death bed on the East Room carpet and said, “I always pick up my own trash.”

The fly had made his presence known before the start of an earlier interview with Bloomberg’s Al Hunt, but it did not interrupt the Q&A session.

Just a note to Karen,
The species' name is drosophila melanogaster not drIsophila.

Can you imagine the media having a field day if Pres. Bush #43 had swatted a fly, apparently with his hand or bowing? The media tried to make him look like an uncultured hick at every turn. Remember the media when Pres. Ford fell? (Pres. Ford was probably the most athletic president) How did the media react when Pres. Bill fell and now Hillary Clinton. Me thinks there's a pattern here.

His plan stinks.
Even the fly could smell it.

PETA Killed 95 Percent of Adoptable Pets in its Care During 2008

Hypocritical Animal Rights Group’s 2008 Disclosures Bring Pet Death Toll To 21,339

WASHINGTON DC – Today the nonprofit Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF) published documents online showing that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) killed 95 percent of the adoptable pets in its care during 2008. Despite years of public outrage over its euthanasia program, the animal rights group kills an average of 5.8 pets every day at its Norfolk, VA headquarters.

According to public records from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, PETA killed 2,124 pets last year and placed only seven in adoptive homes. Since 1998, a total of 21,339 dogs and cats have died at the hands of PETA workers.

Despite having a $32 million budget, PETA does not operate an adoption shelter. PETA employees make no discernible effort to find homes for the thousands of pets they kill every year. Last year, the Center for Consumer Freedom petitioned Virginia’s State Veterinarian to reclassify PETA as a slaughterhouse.

CCF Research Director David Martosko said: “PETA hasn’t slowed down its hypocritical killing machine one bit, but it keeps browbeating the rest of society with a phony ‘animal rights’ message. What about the rights of the thousands of dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens that die in PETA’s headquarters building?”

Martosko added: “Since killing pets is A-OK with PETA, why should anyone listen to their demands about eating meat, using lab rats for medical research, or taking children to the circus?”

CCF obtained PETA’s “Animal Record” filings since 1998 from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Members of the public can see these documents at PetaKillsAnimals.com.

Travers seems to be criticizing the media attention on this by continuing the attention. I always expect to be underwhelmed by Miss Travers writings and she never disappoints.

Some of these stories and comments get more ignorant by the day.Stores sell fly swatters all day every day, people kill flies in their house at cookouts etc what is the big deal people, what does PETA want now? Do they want all the stores to take fly swatters off the shelves LOL and the comment that Obama is more of a BET celeberty rather than being POTUS" What was that comment all about, what exactly were you trying to say? Have some of you not gotten past the color issue yet.

sometimes it seems obama is more of a BET celibrity rather than being potus, being presidential. the media seems to be cutting obama a great deal of slack rather than hard-core investigative reporting. perhaps, it's still the honeymoon phase but when will it end?

So what? The man swatted a fly! That is something we've all done hundreds of times! Why is that news? Next they'll put a camera in his bathroom and show us everytime he uses the bathroom or brushes his teeth!

Posted by: Sue | Jun 19, 2009 2:51:41 AM

His financial reforms stink to the point that they attract flies.

Pleae give our president some respect and love. This a country so full of jealousy and hate. Let us give him a chance and pray for him.

You can rest assured, ella, that Mr. Obummer is in my prayers every night. I pray for his corrupt soul, his pettiness, his vindictiveness and the larceny in his heart. I also pray that his Marxist agenda is defeated!

Holy cow. Slow news day, Jake?

Posted by: Sunnyr | Jun 18, 2009 2:22:38 PM

It's not Presidential or classy to use words such as "sucker". Often a problem with this President.

Posted by: K | Jun 18, 2009 11:06:56 AM

Very strange that this is news.

Posted by: LongT | Jun 18, 2009 8:55:01 AM

Oh come on Americans, give your president a well deserved rest! How does a fly finds its way to the headlines? Is it evidence of how low American journalism has become? Obama is a great president, doesn't matter what the critics say, all he needs is a little respect and an enabling environment. So people need to go back to journalism college or just shut up. I mean, don't people laugh anymore, this is supposed to be for a good laugh not all these battles!

Posted by: Tim | Jun 18, 2009 3:38:41 AM

Do you think obama appreciates this slobbering from the media!? It was sad to see. Such silly reporters over-reacting to a fly swatting. Last week I think one "newsman" bowed when he was shaking obama's hand. The news reporters are making me like obama less and less. They're all having Obamagasms.

Posted by: George | Jun 18, 2009 2:28:34 AM

oh god. It was a fly and probably half dead due to the tv lights. The media is ridiculous over this guy. It's embarassing to watch.

Posted by: Mary | Jun 18, 2009 2:13:34 AM

People, it's a fly...get over it
and go get outside for a change. It's
summer and you are sitting here commenting on a fly...

and while your at it, go on a diet.

Posted by: mitch | Jun 18, 2009 2:08:08 AM

The White House staff and the film crews (and maybe even the Secret Service, hehe) should be embarrassed and apologize for not better securing the room where the President was present.

I've heard from other sources, that PETA is sending the President a "humane flycatcher".

Posted by: Uncle_Milty | Jun 18, 2009 1:19:06 AM

Hypocrites! you read the story, comment on it, and then complain about people paying attention to useless news. If you don't like the news, skip to the next story

Posted by: goatherder | Jun 17, 2009 11:46:29 PM

It's not really a problem but when you see his anger face after he killed the fly, you'd know he actually got very upset of it.
Who says he has no anger?
Even to a small fly he got angry.
