Palau Population, Anecdotally, Less Than Thrilled With Prospect of Uighurs
June 12, 2009 8:49 AM
The decision by Johnson Toribiong, president of the obscure Pacific nation of Palau, to take in up to 13 Uighurs -- Muslim Chinese -- currently being held at Guantanamo is meeting some resistance from the general population.
As ABC News' polling director Gary Langer points out, proportional to population, sending 13 Uighurs to Palau is like sending 188,993 Uighurs to the United States.
The Associated Press reports that Fermin Nariang, editor of the Palau newspaper Island Times, has "been stopped in the streets of the capital Koror by locals venting their anger. 'This is a very small country ... and some are saying if the whole world doesn't want these folks, why are we taking them?' Nariang said. The government has 'fumbled the ball on this one.'"
Yesterday the Justice Department announced that it had released six detainees. Four have been resettled in Bermuda, though as ABC News' Kirit Radia reported yesterday, British government officials are "pissed," according to a senior State Department official, saying they were not adequately consulted. The UK provides for Bermuda's defense and foreign affairs.
The Obama administration released another detainee in Iraq this week while a sixth was sent to Chad.

"These are not "innocent" people but hard core terrorists "
If they are not innocent try them and find them guilty.

All this sort of makes you wonder just who is running the world!

Gee, if I had known Obummer would pay me a couple million bucks, I would have taken a Uighur! I mean, they are just innocent guys who were picniking in Afghanistan during the Tora Bora fiasco.

These are not "innocent" people but hard core terrorists who chose to join al Qaeda and train with them. They weren't at al Qaeda training camps to learn to weave basketry and roast marshmallows.
al Qaeda is attacking and murdering Chinese. Why is America protecting al Qaeda from the Chinese? They aren't exactly our allies but China is not a terrorist nation. How do you suppose we would react if China captured Bin Laden and then set him free?
This is a disgrace

so now what? are they held indefinitely? are they going to be charged with something? Who decides when or how they are released? This is the great plan to dissolve GITMO? Pay struggling nations to take our prisoners? This is getting more and more ridiculous with each "careful, thoughtful" decision of the Obama administration.
This is change we can believe in?

Why are we trying to shuffle these terrorists off on other countries like Palau, just because they feel obligated and obliged to us to take them? What we should do is ship these terrorist back to Iraq. Aren't we trying to convince ourselves and everyone else that we have set up a stable government in Iraq? Then they should be stable enough to confine their war criminals. I say once we are ready to turn over to the Iraqis, the complete control of their country, ship them the terrorist, then run like hell.

So what's up with Hillary Clinton and her ignorance of the requirement to contact her British counterpart BEFORE the arrogant act of dumping some of these detainees in Burmuda? This is a regular keystone kops administration. What a joke. They are ALL Amateur Hour Oracles.

Would love to have been a fly on the wall when the conversation of what to do with these guys came up. "Eric, print up a suitcase full of money and send them to this island" as a dart is thrown to pinpoint the location. "By the time the money gets in circulation it won't be worth anything and I will have lived up to my campaign promise"

The United States and Palau are close allies. They are attempting to fix a humanitarian problem caused by the Bush Administration, pure and simple. Palau, like many countries, receives aid from America, and this is simply an extension of this assistance. Palauans have died fighting for America in the war on terror, including a young Army soldier who was killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan earlier this week. I think allies take care of one another. Besides, these are Chinese who have fought against the Communist government and were 'caught up' in the Afghanistan invasion. They should be embraced.

What's the big deal? No Uighurs have ever escaped from one of our atolls.

what's the going rate to buy a Uighurs today? How is Barry going to receive a tax on their transaction? If more states knew they could buy one or more, they might be more open to letting come visit.

On the other hand - the Uighurs are thrilled beyond their wildest dreams. Also, the Palau government did something the U.S. will never do - they balanced their budget with the swipe of a pen.

"if the whole world doesn't want these folks, why are we taking them?"
And the politics played against GITMO come to bear. Congradulations Democrats on the demonization of GITMO. You have created you're own dirty little bed to sleep in.
