PETA Says No More Fly-Killing, Sends Obama a Humane Fly Catcher

June 17, 2009 10:55 PM

ABC News' Sunlen Miller reports:

PETA has a few words for President Obama: Brush, don’t kill.

After the President very publically swatted and then killed a fly during an interview with CNBC yesterday, the outspoken animal rights group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) said they wished Obama had served a better example.

“We support compassion for the even the smallest animals," says Bruce Friedrich, VP for Policy at PETA. “We support giving insects the benefit of the doubt."

Friedrich says PETA supports "brushing flies away rather than killing them" and was disappointed that the President had gone ahead and squashed the pesky fly.

This afternoon PETA sent a Katcha Bug, a device which traps bugs and allows their safe release back into nature to the White House.

PETA hopes the President will use the catcher but has no far not received communication back from the White House, although they did not ask for specific correspondence.

Friedrich admits that despite his fly-swatting ways, the President has been a champion for animal rights in the past. PETA claims to be pleased by Obama’s denouncement of factory farming, Canadian seal hunting andMichelle Obama’s stance against wearing fur.

I used to support peta, because I do believe in some of their beliefs, but to go the extreme of trying to save a fly or a cockroch which promotes dieases what a joke!peta started out with good intentions at first but now has gotten to the point were you cannot take them seriously at all.

wow, what is this world coming to. we have animal rights control freaks on their knees searching for anything to flip out about. and apparently now the life of an animal is more important than human lives. why dont you put your money towards helping starving and homeless people or something.

Everyone says "it's just a fly" How many of you also say, it's just a fetus. It's just a baby, it's just your dog, it's just your cat. What gives us the right to devalue any life at all on this planet. Why does any human feel that they are entitled to choose to take the life of any living creature? Should we begin to slaughter people that are handicapped as well? I think we really have to look at what our society is creating by living each day nonchalantly with many of our actions supporting animal cruelty, drastic pollution, and adversely affecting our health. Reduce your meat consumption and use of animal products, for the sake of animals, the environment and your own health. Go vegan!

I lost all respect for PETA after this incident. They have gone down hill fast. They are becoming one huge joke.

You misspelt the word 'publicly'.

Posted by: blah | Jul 21, 2009 7:28:21 PM

Excuse me PETA but flies are not animals, they are insects. So--get over it and take care of the Amimal rights since there insects do meet your criteria.

PETA sure has some real nut jobs huh? I mean I do believe in animals rights but isn't this just a fly? I mean come on, really!!

PETA, you are being ridiculous! The President kills a FLY and you just had to comment on it. Stop being so childish and nit-picking at whatever you think will garner you publicity. You all NEED lives.

Posted by: Deecided | Jun 24, 2009 12:57:09 PM

It's not as big of a deal as it's being made into. Even though I do support animals rights, I would not back PETA in the fact that they want to make President Obama look like a murderer for the sake of being on the news.
I'm not saying that all creatures aren't important, but if I have to chose between PETA and Obama, I think I'll go with the President.
(Don't flies only live 2-4 weeks anyways? And at least it died quickly.)

PETA stop being ridiculous. By condoning the president for killing a disease carrying pest, you are alienating the American public and undoing any positive impact or effect you may have in the future. It is time to examine your extreme positions and weigh the cost-benefit of holding views so far from the public. Time to do a reality check. Are you to travel to developing countries and provide these fly catchers to all of the communities plagued by diseases carried by flies? Time to do a reality check, stop alienating the American public, and determine how to effectively educate and advocate about animal cruelty. Your efforts will not be effective while trying to force others to bear these proliferous pests.

It's become apparent that the Pagans Extending Totalitarian Animism care less about the welfare of humans OR animals than they do simply garnering as much publicity as possible. What sad little people they must be, that their attention deprivation drives them to such lunacy. I hope the President captures another fly in his new Katcha Bug device, and then stomps the whole damn thing--fly and all--into a thousand little fragments.

peta just motivated millions to kill houseflies.

Posted by: do be do | Jun 19, 2009 4:36:46 PM

What a bunch of wackos! Sad world. Abort a human baby-fine. Swat a germ carrying fly GASP! God, er I mean Allah help us!

Posted by: janine | Jun 19, 2009 8:35:34 AM

How hard is it to post a WORKING link to the 'catcha bug' ?

Posted by: Skizmo | Jun 19, 2009 5:28:59 AM

When do these wackos get painted as domestic terrorists, which they are? Google "PETA criminal activities" like I did and see what comes up.

As much as I don't condone murder, throwing PETA to the sharks could only be an improvement to the face of the planet.
