President Obama Signs LGBT Partner Benefits Memo

June 17, 2009 6:57 PM

ABC News' Yunji de Nies and Sunlen Miller report: Calling it, "a day that marks a historic step towards the changes we seek," President Barack Obama signed a presidential memo that will extend (limited) benefits to the same-sex partners of gay and lesbian federal workers.

"Many of our government's hard-working, dedicated, and patriotic public servants have long been denied basic rights that their colleagues enjoy for one simple reason -- the people that they love are of the same sex," he said. Still, the President acknowledged "this is only one step."

Surrounded by members of Congress, along with several lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgender (LGBT) rights activists in the Oval Office, the President said that he is limited in the benefits he can extend, due to legal constraints under the Defense of Marriage Act.  He has pledged to overturn that law, and today repeated that promise.

"I believe it's discriminatory, I think it interferes with states' rights, and we will work with Congress to overturn it," the President said. "We've got more work to do to ensure that government treats all its citizens equally; to fight injustice and intolerance in all its forms; and to bring about that more perfect union. I'm committed to these efforts, and I pledge to work tirelessly on behalf of these issues in the months and years to come."

But many in the gay and lesbian community aren't happy with the President.

Ron..

Ahh..duh. Start naming things legal for you (including HAVING a recognized spouse). You will see that it's not equal. Gays are looking for 'special' anything, just equal. It's that simple. It's no big deal for you, because it dosen't directly effect you. Open your eyes, and you'll see.

Homosexuals already had all the rights the the rest of us have; they don't need extra rights.

drdale - Federal employees do not get a "freebie" as you so eloquently stated. The employee pays a portion of the premium the same as those in the private sector who have employee provided insurance. Get your facts straight.

President Obama have you completely forgotten your Bible? Why would you want to reward this behavior and lifestyle?

Posted by: mom | Jun 18, 2009 8:58:02 AM

"all others are dysfunctional behaviors. Why homosexuals should have rights, being wrong?"

Well, then if your child has autism, it's a dysfunction so they should be denied rigths? Is this your line of thinking?

As far as I know, a real man goes to bed with a real woman...all others are dysfunctional behaviors. Why homosexuals should have rights, being wrong?

What a pile of crap. How do you define a "partnership"? Every housemate of the same sex will be lining up for more entitlements.

And now they are whining that it isn't enough. They want to have health care too!!! The rest of us who work in the real world "private sector" don't usually get health care for our spouses. Only in the government, or if you have a powerful union do you get this kind of freebee's. No wonder the country is in debt up to its ears.

The government chastizes people for living beyond their means but they are the worst example.

Give me a break! Panderers all.

Many republicans are still asleep. Get over it; the campaigns are over. Barack Obama is the President of the US and that memo he signed is for Americans whose rights have been denied. When I see some write-ups here, I feel that some just write/talk without a second to reason!

This ABC thing broadcasting from the White House and allowing no dissenting voices in adverts and picking the coverage is scarry.

ABC to take over the part of Leni Riefenstahl - who will play the part of Goebbels??

GO TO: "White House Press Release" date June 17, 2009 you can find the "immediate release" and a lot of information concerning this "memo". One of his statements follows: "That's why I stand by my long-standing commitment to work with Congress to repeal the SO-CALLED Defense of Marriage Act. It's discriminatory, it interferes with States' rights, and it's time we overturned it." He did not call it the Defense of Marriage Act which is the legal name, but SO-CALLED Defense of Marriage Act. Waffle.

While a nice gesture, President Obama really hasn't provided any great new benefits to federal employees. Congress allowed Long Term Care benefits to be extended to domestic partners when they passed the law years ago. President Bush's appointee to head the Office of Personnel Management, the office that manages the federal workforce, chose not to do so. And, in any case, the federal government doesn't contribute a single dime towards the Long Term Care premiums - the employee picks of ALL of the costs. When the family leave was instituted within the federal workforce, it allowed for use of sick leave to care those who were considered "family members" by their close relationship with the employee. And, it didn't provide any additional sick leave above and beyond what the employee normally earns. So no real new benefit here, either.

Oh Mr. Obama, when will the lying stop?

Posted by: young_voter | Jun 17, 2009 10:41:44 PM

He promises and does one thing to get you on his side and turns around and does the opposite. Then turns around promises and does something to get you back on his side. And you people are falling for it. Sorry state of affairs.

Another mess this prez is getting us into. O course it will never be enough to the GLBT crowd. He is wasting money left and right. This is a totally unnecessary benefit, it only increases the benefit expense to the government. It attracts every disenfranchised gay person to go work for the government. It will opnly be one more thing to turn back once we get a normal president on board.

Yeah, I'd like to see that memo too and when does it go into effect? We are being relocated and let's see if this will include me.

Obama once again demonstrates his priorities in the face of a deepening recession by pandering to a group who has become disillusioned with him and deficit spending even more taxpayer money while the combined unemployment and underemployment rate inches toward 20%.

We will Overcome. Ring a bell, Barack?

What if I am not a federal worker? My partner has didly squat. Not one more red penny to the dems!

"The book’s crude thesis, that gay men played instrumental roles in forming the Third Reich and carrying out the Holocaust, has been thoroughly discredited by real historians."

Who are these "real" historians you mention?

Posted by: Sigmonde | Jun 17, 2009 9:51:26 PM

He signed a "memo"??......What a joke. He is trying to pacify the gay groups.
