Spotlight on Non-Profit Work, Obama Calls on “Deep Pockets”
June 30, 2009 3:36 PM
ABC News' Sunlen Miller reports: With an ode to his grassroots community organizing days, President Obama called for a greater cooperation between non-profit organizations and the governments today in the East Room.
“Solutions to America's challenges are being developed every day at the grassroots. And government shouldn't be supplanting those efforts; it should be supporting those efforts. Instead of wasting taxpayer money on programs that are obsolete or ineffective, government should be seeking out creative, results-oriented programs like the ones here today and helping them replicate their efforts across America.”
The President announced that he is tasking his Director of the Domestic Policy Council, Melody Barnes, to lead the effort to scout out, and fund the most promising non-profits in America so they have the resources they need and can serve as a model to the rest of the non-profits community.
“We'll examine their data, and rigorously evaluate their outcomes. We'll invest in those with the best results; that are most likely to provide a good return on our taxpayer dollars. And we'll require that they get matching investments from the private sector, from businesses and foundations, and philanthropists, to make those taxpayer dollars go even further.”
The President said that the partnership between government and the non-profit can only be successful with…money. Cue the private sector.
“That's why I'm glad that there are some deep pockets in the audience here,” the President joked, “Foundations, corporations and individuals, you need to be part of this effort as well. And that's my challenge to the private sector today. Our nonprofits can provide the solutions. Our government can rigorously evaluate these solutions and invest limited taxpayer dollars in ones that work, but we need those of you from the private sector to step up as well. We need you to provide that critical seed capital to launch these ideas. We need you to provide those matching funds to help them grow.”
President Obama said that the need for non-profits is “absolutely critical” now more than ever because of the multitude of challenges the country is facing.
“While we're working hard to rebuild our economy and help people who are struggling, let's face it, there's only so much that Washington can do. Government can't do everything and be everywhere, nor should it be…..So if anyone out there is waiting for government to solve all their problems, they're going to be disappointed. Because, ultimately, the best solutions don't come from the top down, not from Washington; they come from the bottom up, in each and every one of our communities.”

I trust that President Obama can finally shine a little light on the unsung heroes that are overlooked who volunteer and fight for the cause they truly believe in. Non-profits such The Advocates Social Service of San Antonio, Texas which provide advocacy, education, support, and outreach to families and individuals in need of governments assistance in many social service areas. We advocate for those who have wrongfully government assistance or otherwise through our unique comprehensive case advocacy and outreach. Unfortunately, our 30 years of service is not given the respect our AntiHunger and Poverty campaign deserves;therefore we also struggle to provide the essential attention each case requires because there are no funds to pay a staff of caseworkers. We base our belief that "We carry each other's burdens..." GA 6:2 We pray that President Obama recognizes the many non-profit organizations overlooked by our State and local government officials and representatives.

toldyaso . . .
You might have missed it, but there was an enormous financial collapse throughout 2008. The Dow Jones lost 7000 points, hundreds of thousands, millions worldwide have lost their employment.

So Much for The "Change" in Washington! So Much For "Shaking Up Washington"!
Non- Profits & Donations From ALL Economic Walks Of Life Have Been The Main Safety Net For The Poor, Homeless, & Needy. Nothing New Here - Except The Gov't Has Managed To Make Things Worse For The People!!!

Jimbo. . .
"THE SAD REALITY IS THAT IF THE GOV LEFT THE ECONOMY ALONE WE WOULD BE MUCH FURTHER AHEAD THAN WE ARE NOW. OBAMA'S ECONOMIC PLANS ARE NOT WORKING OUT, SURPRISE???"
You're a brilliant economist . .. brilliant. You should be in charge of the Federal Reserve, clean out those old Prescott Bush banking crowd and German World War II funders.
What a brilliant solution - do nothing. Damn wish I'd thought of that.

Our founding fathers left us an estate.
It was to rise or fall on its merit,
guided by a constitution. Some elected
executors have husbanded the general
wealth and welfare of the estate and
others have caused some loss in its
value. But NEVER have we handed it over
to a group that plans to dissolve it
to pay off the enablers of the current
leader. Once this happens, there is
no do-over. Your "estate" is dissolving
in front of your eyes while the press
and airwave media hand out blindfolds.
"Nothing to see here...move along.."

The unemployment rate average for:
1997--4.94%
1998--4.50%
1999--4.22%
2000--3.97%

"Historically speaking those were very good numbers."
Except when compared with 97 thru 2000.
Also the U6 numbers were not very impressive during this low unemployment time indicating a very high number of underemployed people.

Ryan C:
From Nov 2003 through Nov 2005 the unemployment rate fluctuated between 4.9% and 5.8% with an average of 5.36%
From Dec 2005 through Feb 2008 the unemployment rate fluctuated between 4.4% and 4.9% with an average of 4.65%.
Historically speaking those were very good numbers.

"From September 2003 through December 2007--in spite of the mainstream media and the Democrats in Congress claiming otherwise--our economy WAS BOOMING! We had record revenues, record employment and even had two quarters where revenues exceeded spending, not to mention a net of 5 million American jobs being created."
Wages were stagnant, energy costs exploded and a housing bubble imploded.
The only reason revenues exceeded spending was because the Iraq War was no included.
Record employment? How clever and useless since that had much more to do with population increases than a reduction in unemployment.

@ Danita
"p.s. - yes I denounce the Bush deficits. The Republicans came into office on election promises of smaller government and carping about overspending in Washington."
I will not disagree with you here (there is a first for everything!)
"They then double the national debt."
Yes, and OBAMA is poised to DOUBLE once AGAIN! (for those keeping score, this would imply Obama would incur TWICE as much national debt as "Republicans" - To be fair though, keep in mind Democrats were running Congress two of those years).
"President Obama and the Democrats came into office promising action on clean energy, health care, the war in Iraq AND (as it turns out after the economy crashed) action on the crumbling economy."
Won't disagree with you here - they are taking action - time will tell if the actions taken will be the best (with a fundamental grasp of economics and a degree of objectivity, I'm not optimistic).

"If you've missed the people who come on here every day to call the President names and use cheap-shot insults and petty slogans against him and his family in order to SMEAR the President, then you're not paying attention."
Drink!

"And already you're blaming Obama for spending that money, and thus spending more than any other President - how sleazy."
Danita, Danita. These aren't my estimates, they come from the "non-partisan" CBO. Again, search for the Washington Post article "Deficit Projected To Swell Beyond Earlier Estimates" March 21, 2009 (I know you couldn't find this last time - Perhaps I've given you enough information this time). These estimates are based on the budgets Obama has proposed - And we know Obama never lies, right (wink)?
Also - Be sure to check out the associated graphs - In Obama's "best" year (2012 - coincidence?) of projected deficits, he is still higher than Bush's "worst" year (2009).

Most of us call them Democrats!...Opps, sorry...fell into a time warp there for a moment!
Actually danita, the ONLY ones who come here on a consistent basis attacking a politician’s family are indeed Dems & liberals who seem to have a very scary infatuation with Sarah Palin’s family.
Who exactly here has been "attacking" the First Lady or her kids?

So far who has done what they promised?

James Danley ... .
President Bush double the national debt from $5 trillion to $10 trillion. Who did he expect to pay for this? How do you think this can be paid for?

"I . .. am prepared for Danita to ramble on about how I'm a right winger who just spews hate"
moderate . ..

Those are the hate spammers. Pay attention, they're here almost every day.
You MAY be 'moderate' but you're comment was not fair . . . it was a cheap shot.

Projected debt by 2019 by Obama: ~$10T
2019!!! - As far as projecting budgets forward to 2019 - get a grip. Some bills will pass, others might not. There is no way you can accurately project to 2019.
And already you're blaming Obama for spending that money, and thus spending more than any other President - how sleazy.

"Just checking the White House site on the budget and the deficit for the entire 2009 year is projected at $1,752 billion"
You might as well checj the National Inquirer. Actually they have more truth than the White House!
Why would beleive ANY numbers coming form the White House. They are the ones who told us pass the great "Stimulator" and unemployment will top out at 9%....Opps...sure missed that one didn't they! Now the "party" line is...Well, without the "Stimulator" it would be worse!
