The First Lady & First Tweens Take in Beyonce Show

June 24, 2009 10:30 PM

ABC News' Sunlen Miller reports:

While President Obama talked healthcare with ABC tonight, the rest of the Obama family skipped out to see the Beyonce show in Washington, D.C.

The first lady took first tweens Malia and Sasha to the Verizon Center to see one of their favorite singers, bringing along friends from Chicago as well as staffers from the White House, the first lady’s office confirms.

The Obamas are all well documented fans. Beyonce sang for the Obamas' first dance on inauguration night, as well as other inaugural events throughout the weekend in January.

Beyonce told Vogue Magazine shortly after that Michelle Obama said she was a role model for her girls.

"She told me she was very happy that her girls have someone like me to look up to," Beyonce said then of Sasha and Malia. "And I'm like, 'Oh, my God.' You have to feel fortunate to be one of the people whom parents don't mind their children looking up to. The older I get, the more I think about the amount of influence I have on these young girls, and it's scary sometimes. But I also understand how lucky I am to have that."

The Obamas are not only audience members tonight, but are part of the show -- of sorts -- according to an opening night review out of Beyonce’s show at Madison Square Garden in New York City earlier this week. Within a video montage including footage of President Obama mimicking the now famous “hand-dance” from Beyonce’s music video for the hit “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It).”

A role model is to be mimicked. I would
not consider Beyonce to fill this spot.I
do understand the decisions made when she was a child. Now she is an adult and things are even worse. I do not want my dayghter looking up nto a woman who globe-trotted around the globe with a man 11 yrs. older than she. I want her to look a little higher than that. We as African- American women need to remember is--We set our own path--not governed by others. Beyonce is not a good choice for role model

I think all of you need to stop hating on Beyonce. she is great @ what she does and if she wants to help stop hunger good for her. And yes she is a role model for alot of young women. she talks about being independent and striving for our dreams. and as far as her videos go as we all know sex sells.... Iam also sure that you have tried something or done something in life that you are not proud of. Are you saying that the presidents chrildren or Michelle should'nt look up to her cause of some of her videos then alot of people should'nt watch alot of things. She is the best all around entertainer that I have seen in along time and the tracks she is laying is for all people. You never hear anything bad about her. If she was or was'nt a virgin that is non of your concearn. THATS PRIVATE.

as a business role model B is certainly a success,as a singer, actress, wife also, is it surprising that young girls look up to her.All girls love to sing and dance

Geo...you sound a bit sad. Are you educated yourself? I don't recommend that our children spend so much time admiring entertainers including the others that you named.

On another note...Beyonce was NOT a virgin! Where on earth are you getting your information from? Have you spoken to any of her acquaintances in Houston? You are entitled to your opinion, but must you insult others because they have a different opinion? It sounds like you lack maturity which shows where your perspectives on Beyonce stem from.

Beyonce is a human being...an entertainer who has been dedicated and worked very hard at what she does.

But, when you examine the content of many of her songs and watch many of the videos with a critical eye, you have to wonder who is this helping? For example, the Soldier video that had the rap artists with smoke coming from their mouths (acting like they were smoking weed) while Beyonce talked about she wanted a Soldier who could give it to her good. How is this being a role model? Is this who you want your child emulating? Do you want your seven year old being Bootylicious too?

I want more for our youth. I want them to know their history...the rich history that we have as a culture that our children know little about and have minimal interest in. But, you better believe they know what the top videos are and the lyrics to Souljah Boy's latest song.

I am tired of people putting these artists in places they don't belong...namely on a pedastal. There are role models volunteering their time daily in communities nationwide who actually take social responsibility for those young people they impact. There are young ladies and men pursuing doctorates and working hard as humanitarians here and abroad.

I hope that Beyonce' is challenged by Michelle's statement to think harder about what she writes and how she performs in music videos. Her fan base is young and as a result, she needs to give young girls something that will prove to be more fruitful...education, spiritual enlightenment/empowerment (not with a single ladies song...come on now), civic responsibility, etc.

I see that Beyonce now has partnered with Hamburger Helper and this is the first time I have seen her promoting anything on television but herself. I am sure she has done things here and there, but you rarely hear about it. Perhaps she realizes that she has to step up to the plate since she has been called a "role model" by our refined and educated First Lady.

Perhaps we will see a changed Beyonce in the months and years to come. Perhaps we won't see anymore marijuana smoke in her videos and sexual innuendo.
Perhaps Michelle has inspired her to make a real CHANGE for the overall betterment of her fans, which are mainly young.

May Michael Jackson rest in peace. I am saddened that he left here before coming to terms with the negative parts oof his life. May his music continue to be played and may we all learn lessons from his life (good and bad).

My prayers are with the Jackson Family and all of Michael's true friends.

Geo...if you want others' to respect your opinions, reciprocate!

Shouldn't a daughter's role model be her own mother?!

Michelle is a Princeton/Harvard educated lawyer, and now the first African-American First Lady. You mean to tell me that that is not a role model?

What college did Beyonce go to? None. She has only a high school diploma.

We hold people who are college educated to higher standards than entertainers. Michelle has just placed herself below Beyonce. Why? Because she has money?

I think all these commenters are forgetting that Beyonce HAS to wear these costumes, and really, they arent bad or raunchy at all. The bad girls in music are Lil'Kim, Madonna and Britney. For god sakes you idiots, its a well known fact Beyonce's first time was with Jay-Z and she has never been with an other man, i would even go as far to say that she probably kept her virginity till last year when they got married.
She is a perfect role model for girls and boys. She dosent dance in an unappropriate manner, she is a proffesional dancer that comes up with her own choreography. You are very PICKY people to bad mouth Beyonce. How dare you, shes made being a black woman more acceptable and has helped woman move forward and all her lyrics are with about TRUE love, heartache, feamle empowerment or fun "NOT TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY" songs. Michelle Obama knows what she is doing, shes a fan for a reason, have you ignorant people already forgotten her Inaugaration performance? She used her beautiful voice alone that night. When i say she is a good role model, i do not mean she is telling young girls, "come on, be a singer like me", not at all. Her morals (i.e being a good christian, only going with one man and marriage, female empowerment and showing people what real love it). For the commentors that claim to be "mothers" your very very ignorant or either so up yourselves that you just want to enslave your children or bore them to death with boring people. Beyonce is current, she appeals to EVERYONE (i wonder why? does her counterpartners Rhianna, Britney and all the rest who have no talent, appeal to everyone of every age, sex, size and shape?), she is a TALENTED all rounder, who can SIIIIINNNNGGGG, dance and put on a show like no one else can nowdays. She is also a very charitable lady, her and Kelly Rownland have opened up a youth centre in Houston to help the children, she has also been around the world helping childen and ALWAYS ALWAYS pleaseing her fans, she never lets (us) them down. Her concert is a world wide success, she has blown everyone out the competion, she is an amazing lady who will go down in history for her undeniable talent first and formost, then her amazing beauty. Michelle Obama, her husband and her children are fans FOR A REASON. I rest my case against you ignorant people, coudos to those defending Beyonce and the Obamas, also R.I.P Michael Jackson, if it wasnt for the KING OF MUSIC, there would be no amazing Beyonce.

Posted by: Geo | Jun 26, 2009 5:50:20 PM

I want to start off by saying that Beyonce has been dedicated to her craft is a hard worker. She is also very beautiful...

HOWEVER, I do not consider her to be a role model and especially for young girls. Beyonce' will go down in history for her beauty and her body, not her brains or ability to inspire and enlighten. Why on earth would our First Lady select her to be a role model for Malia and Sasha?

As an African American woman, I am very disappointed...we are leading in new cases of HIV and at the bottom of the totem pole in education. What on earth does Beyonce have to offer that will help to change these patterns that plague our people and our community? Nothing! I pray that Michelle (whom I am so very fond of) will reconsider her perspectives on Beyonce and instead challenge her to take more social responsibility in her lyrics, clothing, videos, and endeavors. Beyonce is not Little Kim by any means, but she is not my role model nor will she be my daughters should I ever have any. I don't even want my son watching her (or other half naked young ladies) in videos.

Women are objectified enough on music videos and in society in general. I want more for your children and mine!

I am embarrassed by Michelle's remarks about Beyonce being a good role model for her girls and to hear that she took them to a concert to see her live 2 nights ago...I am in disbelief.

Beyonce is so talented and has the social power to reach countless young people. Why not put some really educational & inspirational content to those tight beats? Why are you encouraging girls/ladies to have him put a ring on it while dancing half naked? If you put it all out there for everyone to see, why should anyone be challenged to prepare to "authentically" put a ring on it?

Michelle needs to think about how she would feel if she gets a call from her daugthers' school because they were dropping it like it is hot during recess or doing Beyonce's famous booty dance during lunch...

Need I say more...

Are you guys serious. I could see if the FIRST LADY Michelle Obama took the girls to see a Madonna concert or talentless Britney Spears, but Beyonce please. Beyonce is a great performer with great costumes. She wears just as much coverings as a ballerina, and I do not see anyone talking about ballet performers. Her concerts are VERY high energy; therefore, she has to wear things that allow her to move around freely. In her personal life, I love her style in clothes. I have seen some of the outfits these teen stars are wearing and my jaw dropped. Not to mention some of the things they say in their music. Most of Beyonce songs are about love, heartbreak and empowerment for women. I am an African-American mother of a sixteen-year-old daughter who loves Beyonce. Because of Beyonce my daughter thinks that if she stays focused, humble and put God first she can be just as success as Ms. B. I agree with her. She is a positive force in music no gambling, drug/alcohol or sex addictions. Here is the definition of a role model: a person whose behavior, example, or success is or can be emulated by others, esp. by younger people. Enough said because she fits the bill.

Some of you need to get out more and/or refrain from commenting on things that you obviously know little or nothing about. You seem to have Beyonce confused with Lil Kim.

Posted by: Brooklyn Democrat | Jun 26, 2009 8:57:54 AM

As a Christian and on the right I love Beyonce'. I attended the show with my two year old daughter, who is even a bigger fan. I started following Beyonce' because of her tight knit family and the values she clearly expresses. I would think the Obama's consider her a role model because she is empowering and clearly shows what you can accomplish if you put your mind and heart into to it. I totally agree with "me"@11:27AM. If you didn't go you wouldn't know. So, don't knock it. Judging someones parenting based on a show thats about so much more than just music is unfair.

What on earth is Michelle thinking? Beyonce is no role model these are the sprt of things that are bad for black america.Beyonce is an indecent woman what is Michelle teaching her daughters?

Posted by: Patty Jones | Jun 25, 2009 6:25:55 PM

What in the world is MICHELLE thinking!!! someone need's to have a long talk with the OBAMA'S, their is no way in the world a CHRISTIAN would take their young girl's to see a BYONCE CONCERT! these are little girl's, I am so ASHAMED, and I am a AFRICAN AMERICAN! I know the right wing is just sitting back with a list of thing's to attack the OBAMA'S with, and in this case they have a right too!

Posted by: MATTIE | Jun 25, 2009 6:05:16 PM

Wow, TRYTHETRUTH---calm down. This is a place for mature discussions, not for you to fire off your obscenities. Like I said, I am 23 years old and I love beyonce but, I wouldnt go so far to say she is a role model for young girls to immulate. Many people that are fans of Beyonce would say the same thing. I respect beyonce's talent, but I would want something different from my daughters....to go to college, dress conservatively (at all times!), and to not get caught up in the superficialness of this world. I think there are so many great african american women to look up too and we need to stop turning to some of these performers.

Posted by: ashley | Jun 25, 2009 5:41:52 PM

I am not considered on the 'right' and I love beyonce (as a singer and performer on stage) but its laughable to believe that she is a role model to young girls. She talks about being "that b*" (the b-word), have 'relations', and shaking parts of the body that no father would really want their young daughter shaking. She dropped out of h.s. (im sure she completed it while on the road though) but she never went to college. All that aside beyonce is a good person and its okay to like her, but for someone that flaunts her body and talks about this that are inappropriate for young girls isnt a role model. I think many of us forget what a role model is and its someone that we dont mind ourselves and our children to immulate.

I saw the Beyonce concert last nite with my daughter (33) and grand-daughter (12). It was awesome to be able to share such a special performance with them. We talked about how inspiring Beyonce is with her energy and talent and entrepreneurmanship and how much effort and work she has to put into her career.
She is an excellent role model for young (and older)girls on many aspects of her endeavors and I am proud that our First lady was there with her daughters and felt the same way.

Posted by: Joyce | Jun 25, 2009 4:53:30 PM

It is so nice to have a real family in the white house.
However I don't think that Beyonce is the right person for Sasha & Malia to call a role model.
Now Oprah Winfrey is a role model she demands respect
Beyonce has a ego problem. I saw a interview with her oneday and she was very nasty to the young lady who asked her a question that someone else has.
That is someon who have let her fame go to her head.
But absolutely not a role model.

Posted by: Yvonne | Jun 25, 2009 3:58:02 PM

Wow, they're bad parents because they took the girls to see Beyonce? The right will hate the Obama's for absolutely any reason whatsoever. Maybe Michelle will take the kids to see the hip, hot and cool Pat Boone next to ease the right wing who obviously have an ear to pop culture.

Posted by: Marco | Jun 25, 2009 3:25:43 PM

Umm, EGO is about his EGO! Wow, that went right over you head I guess.
