Barack and the Giant Peach

July 29, 2009 6:03 PM

ABC News' Jon Garcia reports:

It appears that speaking and taking questions for 55 minutes can make a president hungry. And it might not help that he was giving his remarks in the middle of a grocery store.

As President Obama continued his health care reform tour, he took the stage in the produce section at a Kroger's grocery in Bristol, Va., where he was addressing store employees and executives. Surrounded by yellow melons, deep red apples, and greens a plenty, he joked that he doesn’t get to go the grocery store anymore--and that First Lady Michelle Obama might ask him to bring home some milk.

Almost one hour, 10 questions and dozens of handshakes later, Obama waved goodbye and ventured back by the fresh fruit. He spied the rack of peaches. As he picked one up, he called out, "what do you think?" as if to say "is it worth eating?" The store staff seemed to cheer him on. So the president put the piece of fruit up to his nose, took a big whiff and then took a big bite.

But the peaches cost money. So his trusty assistant, Reggie Love, whipped out a some currency (some say it was a dollar, but that’s not confirmed) and handed it to the president, who dutifully handed it to one of the Kroger's employees.

His appetite apparently satiated, Obama and his posse headed off to Air Force One.  (And it didn’t appear that he picked up any milk, either.)

"Obama, in 6 months time, has managed to create:2) A Trillion dollar deficit Stimulus???? Would that be to create jobs or destroy jobs, cause my kid just lost one today along with her 3 month old baby 2) Double digit unemployment 3)New group of unemployed 4) Race Relation problems 5)Wall Street bail-outs 6) Auto bail-outs 7) Foreign Relations, WHAT Foreign Relations 8) Record number of lost lives in Afghanistan 9) Gitmo."

Let's start with the easy ones #5 and #6. Wall street bailouts and the auto bail-outs were put in place under George W. Bush.

That leads to 1) "a trillion dollar deficit" - more than $700 billion of the current deficit came under the Bush administration.

2) and 3) unemployment - take a look around the world. ALL industrial countries are experiencing record unemployment, business closures and extreme stress on government budgets. This has been (and still is) a MAJOR GLOBAL economic meltdown and as you know - it did not happen on Obama's shift. Yes, it is his to deal with - and yes there are signs of improvement - but NO it will not be a quick, magic fix and YES there will be more unemployment before things turn around. Lots of the Recovery plan was to shore up programs to assist those being laid off, and to prevent as many lay offs as possible.

7) Foreign relations - international opinion of the United States has improved DRAMATICALLY. Even movement on the Israel/Palestine front seems to be taking place - that will be a miracle if it happens.

9) Gitmo - again, almost universal internation (and majority domestic) support for the closing of Gitmo. Obama has said it will be one of the most challenging aspects of his early presidency because of the legalities involved. A tough assignment he promised during the election, and has taken on.

Again..Danita...Yes, a functioning brain would help in matters such as these...You should try to locate one and put politics aside with a good portion of the population who fell for Obama's spin and elected him President...Obama, in 6 months time, has managed to create:2) A Trillion dollar deficit Stimulus???? Would that be to create jobs or destroy jobs, cause my kid just lost one today along with her 3 month old baby 2) Double digit unemployment 3)New group of unemployed 4) Race Relation problems 5)Wall Street bail-outs 6) Auto bail-outs 7) Foreign Relations, WHAT Foreign Relations 8) Record number of lost lives in Afghanistan 9) Gitmo.............AND HE'S GOT 3 1/2 MORE YEARS TO GO...Unconditional love is for family not politicians...

I think that was a .... smoke break...

No President is ever on vacation, not the prior President or this one.

A functioning brain can really help in these matters.

I'm pretty sure the secret service would have a lot to say on what type of compound, accommodations and facilities were required, as would the military for national security matters and communications requirements, as would the office of the White House.

"Contracts for the Blue Heron Farm show three leases for Mr Obama, the Secret Service and White House staff, WITH THE PRESIDENT COVERING HIS FAMILY'S BILL."

It would have been worthwhile for you to think the requirements and the costs through rather than just attempting to pin them on smearing the President.

And for you Republican hypocrites speaking out of both sides of your mouth whenever it's convenient - Bush travelled to his ranch 77 times during his presidency - or an average of close to ONCE EVERY FIVE WEEKS for an average stay of OVER SIX DAYS each time.

Bush was the god of self-serving vacations and vacation time; without question Obama shines in comparison and that is for the better.

A little perspective and thought.

This is a news story? Obama eats peaches. Fascinating stuff, ABC. What will you report on next, his flossing habits? The brand of deodorant he uses? I'm am waiting with breathless anticipation for your next hard hitting news story.

Here's a tip: Maybe you could wax less poetic about Obama's snacking habits and tell us a little more about what is in that health care bill he is trying to ram down our throats.

Jason: I can understand your frustration but to say Obama is living it up is riduculous. He has to live in the white house and what goes with it. He has earned it with the long hours he puts into being President. What you should be aware of is that he did not take the usual money for fixing up the white house as all other presidents have done and has kept most of the furniture that was there and any additional things he needs, he has paid for out of his own pockets. The trip to Paris, he paid for the additional room for his children and any other expenses connected with them. It is funny you never hear about these things. Michelle has not taken the money for new China but is paying for it herself also..I think this is a president and family who remembers where they came from and appreciates what they have. Yes, he does have parties at the white house but that is part of the package. Sorry you cannot see him as someone who really cares and is worried about the economy. I feel you have feed on the through of the lies which are bring spread about him. The economy is better. Housing is better, and may companies are showing profits and some record profits. The tarp money that is being returned is bringing profits back. Today, Amer. Exp. paid back the money with a 26% interest. That's not too bad an investment. The only concern is jobs. All economists say that that is the last thing to recover. Remember, it has only been six months and the recession started at the end of 2007. Unfortunately, some jobs will never return...that is why he has programs to re-educate yourselves for the future. As to the automaker bail out...if he did not do that the job situation would be worse and many small businesses would be gone. People don't realize this but it is true. His interest was not in saving the automakers but the jobs and businesses connected to it. I hope you understand.

I teach my kids to wash fruit before eating it.

danita..Here's a thought...Perhaps Obama is doing a pretty good job of "smearing" himself..I agree he needs down time with the family, but leasing a home for 45,000 a week is definitely in poor taste in these troubled times. I question his decision making process.. I can't afford to spend vacations at 9 million dollar Hawiian vacation homes nor a 20 million vacation home in Martha Vineyard's...I need to save up for my turn at the unemployment line..haven't you heard, 54,000 more unemployed last month makes a person wonder when their next..Just wonder how many of those 54,000 are from Las Vegas, you know the resort town in which Obama slammed as unnecessary luxary for convention goers...Should have spent his vacation time with the AFL/CIO and their family members, with VP Biden in attendance, at that expensive resort in Miami; probably could have gotten a ride with Pelosi on her Air Force private jet at taxpayers expense also...CHANGE???? Obama campaigned himself on being different...see any difference I don't just worse...Power Corrupts..

---Whoa! I just sounded like a liberal! (slaps self in face)---

Why beat yourself up? "Liberals" only sound like liberals too. Nobody ever actually practices what they preach. That's for suckers.

Sacrifices, Jason, sacrifices. "We" (meaning you) are going to have to make them. PS we're going to need more money from you...

Reminds me of a job I had with an insurance company when annual profit sharing was distributed. Regular Joes would get the pittance and the "we had a bad year so we gotta work harder" lecture while the execs split up their share and ran out to buy vacation homes along the shore.

Whoa! I just sounded like a liberal! (slaps self in face

"$45000 a week for a vacation rental. Pure arrogance, especially in hard economic times and it's no surprise to see liberals attempting to justify it."

That would provde health care coverage for quite a few people. Oh, well...Liberals will justify anything: private schools, Gulfstream jets, costly vacations, continuing wars, hanging with the brutal leaders of the PRC, payouts to Goldman...It never ends.

Man, Barry is running an excellent campaign with stops all over the country. He's sure to get the democratic nod, and has a really good chance in the general.

Oh, wait...

Because, of course, just because I slammed one president for his relaxation (ranch vacation) it does not necessarily follow that I have to slam the new president for the same behavior (Vineyard vacation).

Also, you may have commented unfavorably on the prior president's relaxation schedule. However, because you did not address the comment to me, I may assume that you did not make it.

Therefore, because I did not personally hear you pronounce dissatisfaction on the prior POTUS' ranch visit, I may point out that you never made any such statement.

It really is all about me.

I am looking forward to the keg party. It holds far more serious implications for American society than the healthcare plan, which is now DOA. (May it rest in peace.)

Here's what I want to see. Body language from Obama and Gates that shows apologetic deference to Crowley, who does all the talking. Sgt. Crowley decides when the meeting's over.

Then, Obama gives a speech about how regardless of your race, in a law enforcement situation, the police officer is the alpha dog, and you do as you are told. You are not to allow your obsessions with "historical wrongs" to color your behavior toward the officer. Know your rights, but if you want to live in an ordered, chaos-free society, follow that rule of good citizenship.

The cop gets to use his authority and judgment in deciding who to arrest, if anyone. You may not agree with that decision, but then you are not the cop now, are you? The President also may not agree with that decision, but he has no say in the matter.

Both men should apologize profusely to Crowley, who should now be made chief of Homeland Security.
