First Ladies Visit Quake Zone

July 09, 2009 7:43 AM

DeNies ABC News' Yunji de Nies Reports:

Following in her husband's footsteps, Michelle Obama made a visit to earthquake stricken L'Aquila this morning. The first lady and other G-8 spouses walked slowly through the town to the main square, on a street surrounded by crumbled buildings. Mrs. Obama was joined by the first ladies of the UK, India, Mexico, South Africa, Canada, and Gabon. French first lady Carla Bruni Sarkozy skipped the tour, but will visit the area on her own later this afternoon.

In April, a large earthquake devastated the city, killing nearly 300 people and leaving thousands more homeless. Much of the area is still unlivable. Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi moved the G-8 Summit to the region to help boost the local economy.

The prime minister took President Barack Obama to the quake-zone yesterday. The president stopped to take photographs with local firefighters, and expressed his sympathy.

"Obviously our hearts were broken by the death and destruction that took place after the earthquake. And I'm very pleased that the United States, like many other countries, will be contributing to help the rebuilding process,” the president said.

Later, the White House announced that the U.S. government, in partnership with the National Italian-American Foundation, will take a number of steps to help the region. Those include modular housing and classrooms for University of L'Aquila students, summer recreational activities for displaced children and year-long scholarships for University of L'Aquila students to study in the U.S.

The area is still seismic. Italian news agencies are reporting four small quakes in the region, ranging from 2.1 and 2.5 on Richter Scale. Summit organizers have helicopters on standby, in the event of a more serious incident.

FLOTUS Fashion Watch: Mrs. Obama wore a full yellow skirt, matching top and short sleeved J.Crew flower patterned cardigan. The cardigan was fastened with a large jeweled broach. She wore her hair in a small, high French twist.

She might as well be wearing a $300K suit bought with tax dollars no less, considering her "staffing" needs (see below). I've never gotten the "fashion" thing w/ Michelle -- she wears some of the most atrocious looking things at times. Modest, or E. Rooseveldt are not words that I'd use in the same sentence with M. Obama. Will she go down in history as the first First Lady to have a commercial sponsorship (J. Crew) using the White House for advertising?

The figures are in. As required by Congress since 1995, salaries paid to staffers employed in the West Wing of the White House must be publicly reported. Most of you won't be pleased to learn that your tax dollars are paying $1,448,500 annually to provide the First Lady, Michelle Obama, with the staff she feels she needs to execute her duties as FLOTUS. ....

"J.Crew, Diane Von Furstenberg, Gloria Vanderbilt - nothing makes that awful woman attractive - because she's unattractive on the inside."

More insults as hate spamming. Pathetic.

I voted for Obama and I can vote him out.
I'm disappointed at what he is doing,
nothing. The economy is get worse.
He travels all the time and takes his family with him. Please Mr. Obama get
to work for the American people.
Stop being so concerned about other
nations. Get off the TV and sit behind
your desk that I voted to put you behind
and show me something Please!
I'm thinking of voting Independent from now on. I mean really. Get America back to work and get our jobs back in the USA from all the countries overseas.
I hope that I voted for you and all you did was lie to us and talk the talk just to get elected.
Americans are hurting and we voted you
to help us now help us. I don't want to hear that you and Biden didn't know how bad the economy was. Come on!
Work harder for us or I will be one American who will not vote for you again in 2012.
Will never vote Republican ever.
All Americans should start voting
Independent and show the Democrats and
Republicans we are tired of the talk.

Some people on here will look for any excuse to attack the Obamas . ... basically hate spammers.

They hate on the Obamas for going for ice cream with their kids, hate on the Obamas for their fashion sense, hate on the Obamas for visiting an earthquake site, hate on the Obamas for having suitable wardrobes for international heads of state, hate on the Obamas for a kids skirt, hate on the Obamas because their families require security, soon they'll hate on the Obamas for taking a short summer holiday . . . you name it, they'll hate on the Obamas.

Transparent.

I agree with your sentiment but - after almost 6 months - The First Lady needs to stop touring and get moving on a "cause". I will implore once more on this blog to take up the cause of the sex traficking going on here from other countries like Russia. Does she have the nerve to do it?

Posted by: Traffic Cop Timmy | Jul 9, 2009 2:07:52 PM

I'm glad Michelle toured the earthquake area. THat is the kind of traditional role First Ladies play and she is doing it well, just as she did at the visit with Russian children. Thanks for letting us know what she is doing while the G8 leaders are meeting.

In May, Michelle Obama wore a $169 Talbots silk dress on a magazine cover. It was definitely free publicity for an American company struggling to promote a new image. Should she be charged with an ethics violation? No more than Sarah Palin promoting a parka.

However, the 1978 Ethics in Government Act requires members of the upper levels of all three branches of government (including the President) to file annual public financial disclosure reports that list sources of all income, including income to wives and children.

For example, Nancy Reagan's fashion gifts and loans were determined worth about $3 million, considered by some as a violation of the Ethics Act. If (and I say "if" because the only spot I could find this accusation is on rabidly unreliable Newsmax) the first family is receiving clothing at no charge, IMO, it should be listed in the annual financial disclosure.

Did Michelle wear her new $5800 purse and $540 dollar running shoes for the excursion?
There is nothing more that drives me bananas then seeing/hearing a liberal politician make a career out of blasting rich people, only to have them turn around a live the kind of lifestyle that they have been railing against for years.

Limousine liberals should be kicked out of power immediately.

Whether it's al gore in his private jets, yachts, mansions, or john edwards' 28,000 sq ft mansion, or the kennedy's billions, or nancy pelosi's 30 million dollar net worth, or reverend racist/wright's 2 million dollar 10,000 sq ft mansion, they are all hypocrites and the idiotic masses keep voting these swindlers into power. The most millionaires in congress today are democrats and they have somehow been branded the "poor person's party", when in actuality, all the democratic party does is make people poor.

I see the Obama's are setting a good example of belt tightening--they are so in touch with us commoners.

Hundred dollar steaks, chefs flown in to cook pizza, $500 sneakers, $6K purses, flying to NYC for date night.

But why should BO worry? He thinks his supporters are too in love or dumb as rocks.

Some of us saw this coming. He is a fraud.

How much Did Oscar De La Renta pay Laura Bush to wear his clothing. Oh, Oh, stupid me it's a double standard isn't it. You people need to get a life. It's ony okay if your side is doing it RIGHT??? Let's not forget the Cindy McCain $70,000 outfit for his acceptance speech oh and how about all that money you pumped into the Republican Party to pay for Sweet Sarah's wardrobe. Talk about hypocrites, I haven't seen one remark here that indicates you people are any but the biggest hypocrites ever. I just can't imagine what your comments would be if she wore jeans and a T-shirt. Who are the hypocrites???

Posted by: annec | Jul 9, 2009 1:08:37 PM

As she said during the campaign, there is still 'a hole in her heart' over the economic downturn, and she feels our pain.

What a hypocrite.

tychisum...We make a six figure salary and I would NEVER NEVER buy a $540 pair of shoes nor a $6,000 purse, or a $895 purse for that matter. Such behavior demonstrates a lack of understanding for your fellow Americans in these hard economic times..I just could not do it...Don't care what political party you are talking about..just a classless thing to do..

Beat me to it! :-)

Posted by: drjohn | Jul 9, 2009 10:45:06 AM

Why is Michelle Obama touring earthquake zones with her $6k purse, $500 sneakers, and "free" J. Crew clothes?

Posted by: afkbrad | Jul 9, 2009 10:39:18 AM

J. Crew isn't new to America. It has been an American brand for decades. I wear their modest priced clothes because I am 6 feet tall, and they fit well. Investigate what. I have 4 coach purses, and I worked for them. Because I likes Coach....what is the problem with a pair of sneakers or purse. She isn't wearing a 300,000 dollar outfit. Or a "custom made suit" that cost 4,000 dollars. Stop already! She's one of the most modest First Ladies, not glamourous, but really on the same level as Ms. E. Roosevelt.

Posted by: tychisum | Jul 9, 2009 9:28:09 AM

Our FLOTUS has always represented us across the globe. And if she is wearing something different than just a "stiff suit", as no one does anymore, why don't tell us. It makes us proud.
