Malia Obama – Budding Fashionista?

July 06, 2009 3:06 PM

ABC News' Karen Travers, Sunlen Miller and Caitlin Taylor report:

Is Malia Obama following in the fashionista footsteps of her mother, First Lady Michelle Obama, and flashing designer duds?

For the flight with her family from Washington DC to Moscow, the 11-year old First Tween sported a skirt that bears a striking resemblance to one by designer See by Chloe.

The skirt is available for purchase online at Intermix, retails for $345 but is now on sale for $219.

The White House does not comment on the clothing choices of the First Daughters’ and would not confirm that the skirt was indeed by the designer.

If so, Malia, who just turned eleven this past weekend, may have inherited her mother's taste in sometimes expensive clothes. Most recently Mrs. Obama, who at times is also known to wear affordable J Crew, was seen sporting a pair of $540 kicks at a community service event at a DC food bank.

Malia, as well as her younger sister, Sasha, will have many high -profile outings with their parents while on a week-long jaunt through Russia, Italy and western Africa.

Why is this even an article? I seriously doubt Malia is picking/buying her own clothes.

the money is well spent for the kids to look their best being in the public eye they have to look presiental.

what ever they spend their money or any thing else it is their money they earned it honestly.

My liberal friend were shocked that she didn't really see any posts that attacked the obamas childrens.
Kind of sad having to explain to her about class.

Malia Obama walking around Italy with a peace sign t-shirt. Whose agenda do you think she is supporting? Now that really looks tacky! I would not call that being a budding fashionista!

We didn't speak as much about the older Bush girls who were out partying while their father held our nations highest office. Get real, these are children, and Michelle is the wife of our President.

Let's admire them for their good taste, and then we can overlook your bad taste.

This story is sick. Never have a seen an article questioning the price tag of the Bush twins or Chelsea Clinton. You have no business writing this article. I know ABC is conservative, but this is too far for even you!

DISGUSTING!

Leave the Obama girls alone. Would you prefer them to look tacky? Or #### like some not to be mentioned presidential daughters?

This is news?

Edward R Murrow is thrashing in his grave.

Countrygirl: What are you talking about? Anything the Obama's spend on clothes is thier own money, taxpayers do not outfit the family. And for the record the three twits who wrote this "article" don't are speculating as to the cost of the clothes. (Speculating means that they don't really know what they are talking about.) If you want to be upset about something it makes a lot more sense to be upset about something REAL. Going off about imaginary things will have people questioning you sanity.

I think the Obama girls should be talked about as much as possible. They are not off limits as far as I am concerned. Sarah Palin's children were not off limits, President Bush's girls were not off limits. Remember what they say about paybacks. The economy going to hell in a hand basket and no one seems to care so why not focus on the President's family.

My children have clothes (mostly J Crew) that originally were (way over)priced at hundreds of dollars. But I buy them on sale at an outlet department store for pennies on the dollar. So the "$295 cashmere sweater" my 18 year old loves really only cost me $17.95. Maybe that's what Mrs. Obama does. Or maybe she has money and likes to spend it on her children just like mothers all over the world.

On the other hand, for special occasions, I have spent $200 (or more) on a fancy dress for one of my children. It's my money. I earned it. I get to spend it as I please.

This is life. Not a scandal.

She is 11 years old and nearly six feet tall, going through her awkward phase in front of the world. She will be in women's clothes, with the associated price tags, for the rest of her life. I'm sure her mother managed the selection of her outfits for this trip and all others. Be a person and just leave the child alone.

"Child of rich parents wears expensive clothes"

This may be literally the dumbest thing I have ever read.

Also, I'll bet Barack Obama has some really expensive clothes, but you'll never see an article about them: after all, men wear expensive clothes because they're important and need to look professional, while women wear expensive clothes because their second X chromosome makes them utterly frivolous.

This is so stupid....how about talking about the other politician kids. and for the ones trying to compare Malia to the teenage girl that had a baby out of wedlock baby.....Please....not even in the same ballpark....sickening.

Excellent reporting. Hardhitting, topical, and exciting. Bravo.

Did you guys really need THREE journalists to collaborate on a 150 word article about an 11 year-old's clothes?

Well, keep up the "good" "work".

Posted by: Omnissiah | Jul 7, 2009 3:58:53 PM

Are you kidding me? Peter Jennings, Harry Reasoner, David Brinkley and Roone Arledge are all turning in their graves at the myopic idiocy that passes for "journalism" from your organization. SHAME ON YOU!

Posted by: Dave | Jul 7, 2009 3:50:43 PM

Expensive taste in clothes??? Got a source for that, Mr. "Journalist"? ABC should stick to the news.

Posted by: Lynn Petersen | Jul 7, 2009 3:49:25 PM

So, mparker, thank you for explaining the rules. If a politician brings his/her children on a stage with them, those children are fair game. BTW, if you want to discuss rambling idiots, let's talk about Obama without a teleprompter or Biden almost any time.
