Michelle Obama Reaches Out to Orphans
July 07, 2009 6:47 AM
ABC News' Yunji de Nies and Sunlen Miller report:
Like many first ladies, Michelle Obama spends a lot of her time in public with children. Her visit Moscow was no different. Mrs. Obama visited the St. Dmitriy Orphanage, meeting with about two dozen children. The children range in age from four to 16, some are true orphans, some disabled, others come from so called “vulnerable families” -- those with more than four to five children, who simply need help.
Several of the children performed for Mrs. Obama -- some sang, others played piano. They presented her with handmade gifts, including a large geometrical ball made from paper, and a large framed hand embroidered flower. The young girl who presented the flower said it had taken her two days to complete.
The children asked Mrs. Obama how many children she has. She responded, two girls, including one named Sasha. Mrs. Obama explained that Natasha is Sasha’s full name, and that it is the President’s favorite name.
“How many Sasha’s do you have here?” she asked the group. There were three in all. Mrs. Obama told the children that her daughters were spending the morning with their grandmother making dolls.
St. Dmitriy’s founder, Father Shatov Arkady, led the Mrs. Obama on her visit and said he wished she could stay forever. The First Lady choose to visit St. Dmitriy’s in part because it receives funding through USAID and the United Nations Development Program. After meeting with the children, Father Arkady took Mrs. Obama to meet with nursing students, who study in the same building.
The 20 faith-based nurses (not nuns) help St. Dmitriy’s with the orphans, and do larger outreach to help the sick in the community. Mrs. Obama spoke to the students about her own work at the University of Chicago’s Hospital before becoming first lady and the importance of volunteerism. She explained that in her new role, national service is one of her “signature projects.”
The nurses also presented Mrs. Obama with a gift -- three hand-painted sets of matryoshka or “nesting” dolls. Upon request, Mrs. Obama signed a poster hanging on the wall.
Later in the afternoon, the First Lady, along with a group of the orphans, several hundred school children, and Mrs. Svetlana Medvedev, watched the Moiseyev Dance Company perform at the Stanislav and Donchenko Theater. The performance featured traditional Russian dancing and singing, with a live orchestra. First Tweens Malia and Sasha, along with GrOTUS Marianne Robinson also watched the show.

How can a woman who spends $875 on a clutch purse -- the better part of a thousand dollars -- have the nerve to counsel young people to go into low-paying service jobs?
If Michelle Antoinette walked her talk, she'd be buying clothes from Good Will and giving all of her $300,000 salary to charity.
But she lived the high life instead, first as the rich wife of a rich man and now as the pretender to the role of First Lady.

Wonder if she carried her $5000+ clutch purse to the orphanage?

michele is as phony as they come. When she doesn't get her way, she doesn't feel "proud"
The same old excuses of fixing the mess left by Bush is getting old. Personal responsibility apprently is not one of the obamas virtue.

The Dems won the majority in Nov 2006, Ryan. But you are more right than me if you really, really need to be, by 7 weeks.

"#1: for a typo - as I meant to type 2006, not 2004, as I do know the difference, but I neglected to proofread."
And you would still be wrong.
The Democrats took over in Jan of 2007.

No doubt the Obama's OTHER daughter will be pleased to know that Natasha is the President's "favorite" name, NOT Malia. Its hard to tell who is more insensitive, the President for apparently saying such a thing, or Michelle for repeating it for public consumption.

I absolutely adore Michelle and believe she is doing a fantastic job of being a representative of American women. She is showing you can be intelligent, well-educated, a good mother, and a good wife, and a role model. She is articulate, presents herself well in every situation, and the president appears to be very proud of her. She doesn't always wear what I would have her wear, but she looks good. What more could we ask of a first lady? She's fabulous! Find someone else to criticize.

I think that Michelle is doing a great job. She is not the phoney woman that I see some of you think she is. Michelle is down to earth and knows what to do in any situation. She done a remarkable job working with the kids when they did the White House garden. She seems to love children and I admire that. You people don't know a thing about being nice at all. I think that you are rotten in the things you all say about someone else. One day it will come back to haunt you. Keep up the good work Michelle.

I will take my lumps... but not as a "right wing liar."
#1: for a typo - as I meant to type 2006, not 2004, as I do know the difference, but I neglected to proofread.
#2: for espousing an opinion about Michelle's mothering skills with incorrect information. Grannie Marian only signed on in 2007 as nanny during their presidential campaign, not the girls entire lives... when I claimed she was a latchkey mother (my opinion) I must have been thinking about the New Yorker interview in 2008 when she talked about having a fulltime housekeeper.

To author: have you never heard about Stanislavky and Nemirovich-Danchenko? Google!
The theater is named after these two great Russians.

This is a traditional and appropriate First Lady activity. I am glad to see Michelle doing this with such enthusiasm. I am sure the kids enjoyed hearing that Sasha's full name was Natasha, something I did not know. A lovely Russian name and it was cute that so many in the group shared it.
I would like to hear more about Mrs. Medvedev as well. I understand that Russian First Ladies, with the glaring and enjoyable exception of Raisa Gorbachev, have never been as much in the public eye as American ones. Do the MEdvedev's have children?

"Hey Michelle, why don't you tell the children what you really did in the hospital. You know where you got your salaried multiplied by 3 after you and your hubby had earmarked tax money funneled into your hospital"
Except that the supposed earmark happened a year or so after she got her raise and the earmark did not go thru.
The lesson as always? Right wingers lie.

Oh here comes the right wing . ..
Michelle is evil, Michelle is phony, Michelle hates her children, Michelle wears too expensive clothes, Michelle wears too cheap clothes, Michelle has big hips . . . . blah, blah, blah . ..
What a creepy bunch.

"Since 2004, you can firmly lay responsibility for what is termed "the mess" on the democrat majority in congress, squarely on the congressfolks and senators (with GW siding with them a decent amount of the time)"

Michelle is a latchkey mother, with them being raised by Grannie their entire lives. She is a career woman who doesn't want to be "burdened" by her kids, that's why they keep Granny around. And that makes for a "wonderful mother"??? Posted by: BK | Jul 7, 2009 2:10:17 PM

I was with you up to this point. I'm not sure any of us are in a position to judge her this harshly. We don't know the inner workings of their family. My suggestion would be to tone down the rhetoric and exaggeration and stick to the facts. There's plenty going on in this administration to question without going this far.

Since 2004, you can firmly lay responsibility for what is termed "the mess" on the democrat majority in congress, squarely on the congressfolks and senators (with GW siding with them a decent amount of the time). Remember, the oversight of the country and new bills and legislation come from the legislature, not from the executive. Sadly, the executive did not do enough to protect us from the corruption of the Dodds, Franks, Pelosis, Reids, Conyers', Schumers, Boxers and Feinsteins... So, yes, go ahead and blame Bush. I do, he took his eye off the ball and did not do enough to ward off the policies of these nefarious characters.

Even in a posting about Michelle? B-b-b-but... B-b-b-blame B-B-B-Bush!
"btw: I wonder if the pay scale for republican tr0//s on the internet have increased."
Doncha know? We are all RICH. We don't need to be paid to post. Republicans are all independently wealthy! We post because we have the freedom to post. You are projecting if you think any of us are paid. That's the way the Democrats do it.
We are free and independent thinkers, and we are growing in numbers.
