POTUS on Health Care Reform: You'll Save Money

July 15, 2009 1:51 PM

ABC News' Yunji de Nies and Sunlen Miller report:

President Barack Obama kept up the drumbeat on health care reform, with a short speech in the Rose Garden this afternoon.  With nurses from the American Nurses Association by his side, some in signature scrubs, the President said that lawmakers can no longer "kick the can down the road."

"This is a problem we can no longer wait to fix.  Deferring reform is nothing more than defending the status quo – and those who would oppose our efforts should take a hard look at just what it is they’re defending."

The President repeated his assertion that the current healthcare system is unsustainable, and said that ultimately reform will pay off.

"You’ll save money," President Obama said, "If you lose your job, change your job, or start a new business, you’ll still be able to find quality health insurance you can afford.  If you have a preexisting medical condition, no insurance company will be able to deny you coverage.  You won’t have to worry about being priced out of the market.  You won’t have to worry about one illness leading your family into financial ruin.  That’s what reform means."

The President praised lawmakers in the House and Senate for the work they’ve done so far, as an example of bipartisanship

“Yesterday, the House introduced its health reform proposal.  And today, thanks to the unyielding passion and inspiration provided by Senator Edward M. Kennedy, and the bold leadership of Senator Chris Dodd, the Senate HELP Committee reached a major milestone by passing a similarly strong proposal for health reform.  It's a plan that was debated for more than 50 hours and includes more than 160 Republican amendments - a hopeful sign of bipartisan support for the final product,” the President said, "This progress should make us hopeful – but it shouldn’t make us complacent.  It should instead provide the urgency for both the House and the Senate to finish their critical work on health reform before the August recess."

Today, ABC's Medical Editor Dr. Tim Johnson will interview President Obama on the subject of health care.  Watch World News with Charles Gibson to see his report.

Job loss...Been there. Done that. Yep, still 'there'. My heart goes out to those still getting 'pinked'.

For me, losing my job was one of those defining moments in life. I knew I had a choice: I could choose to lose my way (my mind) or rise to the challenge and
follow what my Spirit tells me to do, always remembering that I am more than a statistic on the news.

I'll share with you what I was told the day I got "set free" (laid off) from my
job: "This is a new chapter in your life. WRITE ONE HELL OF A CHAPTER!" And I did just that! Will you?

So if you just need a break from the doom and gloom, let me send you a FREE book download...no strings attached, really!

Yes, times are tough, but it doesn't mean that we can't still 'give back' to one another. This is simply my way...

take care,
Louise

I'll quote another poster here . ..

"If the republican machine of personal destruction didn't uncover any wrongdoing you can bet there isn't any."

Exactly.

Also, Parallex View . .. you're not providing proof, you're still just making allegations.

You should not go around smearing a person without proof - didn't your parents teach you anything? Seriously.

==========================

Danita, the President has a clear OBLIGATION TO PROVIDE PROOF. Parallax isn't raising unfounded allegations or smearing anyone, he is asking that the president meet his obligations as set forth in the Constitution of the United States and in election laws.

Now, if these things were being said about a common citizen who was/had NOT run for PUBLIC OFFICE, then you would have a point.

The simple fact is, however, that the second Mr. Obama put his name in the hat, he took on that obligation. Calling for him to meet that obligation is in no way a smear or accusation. That's why its called PUBLIC office, Danita. For Obama to continue to evade his obligations in this matter is downright shameful. For people to call for him to meet his Constitutional obligation is to be commended, not castigated.

He's spent probably over a million dollars avoiding meeting this obligation by fighting multiple lawsuits, all on TECHNICAL grounds, NOT substantiative grounds. That's not only dismissive of every US Citizen, but just downright weird. For the military to revoke activation orders on a soldier, because of this issue is even more bizarre, and sets a rather amazing precedent.

So I'll say it again. Its called PUBLIC office, and this particular public office requires, by our very Constitution, proof. For Obama to continue to evade his obligations in this matter is downright shameful and is behavior far below that expected of anyone in the office of the President of the United States. For people to call for him to meet his Constitutional obligation is to be commended, not castigated or derided.

How can the democrats be so blind to the ramifications of trying to heap this burden on employers. Are people really that ignorant and incapable of thinking long-term? fixiing healthcare is important--just everybody slow down so we can do this in a way that makes sense.

You claim the proposed health care reform will SAVE us money Mr. President? Not according to the CBO. CBO has a dismal forcast of the current plan, not just up front which is bad enough, but all the way down the road past 10 years out.

Posted by: And Atlas Shrugs Yet Again | Jul 16, 2009 3:19:27 PM

EXACTLY! We are told by 0bama that this so called "health reform" is going to cut the price of health care. Well guess what? The CBO comes out today and says that the cost of health care is going to INCREASE!

So this bill will result in higher patient costs, higher national debt, crippling taxes on small business (huge job losses) resulting in the government rationing health care. WHAT GOOD COMES FROM THIS BILL OTHER THAN THE GOVT. TAKING MORE AND MORE CONTROL OVER PEOPLE'S LIVES???

THIS IS PURE INSANITY!!!

However, if you're an older citizen, you don't need to worry. As 0bama has stated: "we need to embrace hospice" and "maybe that surgery isn't the best thing, maybe the better option is that pain medication". Lucky you...you won't be around to see the carnage that 0bama will leave behind.

CBO Chief Criticizes Democrats' Health Reform Measures

By Lori Montgomery
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, July 16, 2009; 2:25 PM

Instead of saving the federal government from fiscal catastrophe, the health reform measures being drafted by congressional Democrats would increase rather than reduce public spending on health care, potentially worsening an already bleak budget outlook, the director of the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said this morning. ....

Timmy . . .

You should learn about taking responsibility for your actions and accusations. Smearing people without proof is shoddy.

A draft of the House Democrat health care bill is out, and it's been leaked to ATR staff. There are several major tax increases in here, most of which violate the Taxpayer Protection Pledge. They include:

a tax on individuals failing to sign up for health care equal to the lesser of 2.5% of adjusted gross income (AGI) or the average individual premium amount
a tax on employers for not providing a health care plan equal to 8% of payroll. This becomes 0, 4, or 6 percent of payroll as payday totals dip below $400,000 annually
a new and undetermined excise tax on health insurance plans
codification of the "economic substance doctrine," whereby businesses would not be able to engage in legal tax avoidance techniques without demonstrating a bona fide business purpose
delay of worldwide interest allocation, a baby step toward the full double-taxation of corporate profits earned overseas
the big one--a new "surtax" on the AGI of small businesses and other high income earners. Here's the details:
1% on AGI of $350,000 to $500,000
1.5% on AGI of $500,000 to $1,000,000
5.4% on AGI of over $1,000,000
Those brackets are 50% if you're Married Filing Separately, and 80% if you're Single or Head of Household

This will result in a top rate of 45%, and a capital gains rate of over 25%. It's more than that when you factor in that this surtax is NOT on taxable income, but on adjusted gross income (AGI). Factoring that plus state income tax in means that the top rate will exceed 50%, and the capital gains rate will exceed 30%.

And it actually gets a lot worse. Employers would also be mandated to provide health insurance under the bill, and the cost of health insurance would likely skyrocket because of new regulations called guaranteed issue and community rating. The only alternative, which many companies would either be forced into by cost considerations or choose for simplicity, would be to pay a payroll tax of as much as 8 percent. That's on top of the existing 15.3 percent payroll tax for Social Security and Medicare, creating a new total payroll tax of 23.3 percent.

wow, i had not read so many ignorant comments in a while... & from highly educated people too, i suppose... embarrassing.

If you are advanced in age, you have good reason to fear the coming health care changes. The increases in cost to the government will be overwhelming and cost-cutting measures will have to occur. The easiest way to cut costs is to limit health care to older Americans. And why not? After all you've had a good life, time to step aside.

Mr. Obama said as much himself in answering a question from a woman asking about an operation for her grandmother. Without even seeking any details of the case he replied that she might be better with a pain pill than and expensive surgery.

And with a big enough pain pill, no problem...

Look for the Obama media to start hyping stories on assisted suicide... Oh they are already doing that, look at the story on the composer/director, who with his wife traveled from England (where they have national health care) to Switzerland so they could both get assisted suicide together. How romantic.

You will be told that like the "right to live", you have the "right to die". This will be billed as a great improvement to your medical care. But at some point the right to die will become the obligation to die.

Hi Danita,

So you don't know which hospital it was either. I just think it is strange that in the Internet age, in the midst of the most open and transparent administration ever, we can't find out in which hospital the blessed event took place.... What could he be hiding?

Posted by: Terry | Jul 16, 2009 8:58:48 AM

The TOTUS must think we are even dumber than him. Sorry Kenyan, nice try, but some of us actually have a brain!

Posted by: TxBoB | Jul 16, 2009 7:13:03 AM

Sorry Danita, but I'm a card-carrying Democrat.

Posted by: Jon F | Jul 16, 2009 5:28:54 AM

The Democrats are mostly filthy commiemliars and cheats and crooks and President Obamas and his team are plain stupid and uneducated - and they're Democrats after all.

If only those clean, honest and decent Republicans were in power snorting their noses around. They would bomb Iran, bomb Venezuela, bomb North Korea, bomb Cuba, bomb Bolivia - and fix this whole economy nonsense with a snap of their blessed fingers.

Such a clean lot, uncorrupted and not a criminal amongst them.

Posted by: danita | Jul 16, 2009 3:38:12 AM

And no, if you're making accusations against someone you must prove them.

----------------

Danita, you're about as badly mistaken as its possible to be. Check the LAW.

Parallex, start even earlier -- he's required to give it up on demand as soon as he asks to be put on the ballot.

There is simply ZERO justification for Obama to not have made his long form AND any associated relevant documentation (such as hosptial records) available. Now, if he didn't want to make it PUBLIC, that's fine I suppose, depending on what the election laws require in that regard anyhow -- but if law allows him to insist on sealed evidence, then give it to the Supreme Court for a ruling.

Oh, WAIT, gee, the PERFECT opportunity for exactly that just happened, but instead of giving the docs over, he had Holder order the case dismissed!!! Can we say "conflict-of-interest" here boys and girls? I knew we could! (think paycheck here, as in, who hired and who pays Holder? among other things)

Posted by: And Atlas Shrugs Yet Again | Jul 16, 2009 3:36:04 AM

Yeah and like that guy that authorized the photo-op for AF One over New York... and Mr. Obama's term has just begun, more guffaws to follow!

Obama's vaunted "Car Czar" just quit after only 6 months on the job.

Low and behold, he and the company he co-founded have been under a long term Federal investigation for pay-to-play crimes.

This has GOT to be the most corrupt and radical group of appointee's ever.
