Painting Protestors as "Partisan Mobs with Lies About Health Reform," Democrats Rally Their Own Activists to Visit Members of Congress at Town Halls, District Offices
August 09, 2009 3:51 PM
Supporters of President Obama formerly signed up as members of "Obama for America" received an email today from Mitch Stewart, the director of the group's current incarnation, Organizing for America, to show up at town halls and congressional offices as a counter to the protestors against the president's health care reform push.
Painting the protestors as "Insurance companies and partisan attack groups...stirring up fear with false rumors about the President's plan," Stewart's email tells supporters whom their member of Congress is and even provides information about town hall meetings they may be holding.
Writes Stewart: "As you've probably seen in the news, special interest attack groups are stirring up partisan mobs with lies about health reform, and it's getting ugly. Across the country, members of Congress who support reform are being shouted down, physically assaulted, hung in effigy, and receiving death threats. We can't let extremists hijack this debate, or confuse Congress about where the people stand."
Supporters are told to stop by local congressional offices to show support for health care reform with the option of a "quick conversation with the local staff, tell(ing) your personal story, or even just drop(ping) off a customized flyer and say that reform matters to you."
After participants sign up, they're sent to a webpage (an example of one for Nevadans is HERE.) where they're told to "Stay calm and positive. While some are attempting to disrupt and shut down debate, our goal is to engage in meaningful, respectful discussion. Remaining calm, positive and polite while speaking to any staff member is the best way to be heard."
Members of Congress "who are still putting insurance companies and partisan point-scoring ahead of their constituents must know that voters are watching -- and that we expect better," Stewart writes.
Democratic National Committee spokesman Brad Woodhouse said "we want OFA supporters - and all Americans - to be part of an informed, intelligent discussion about health insurance reform and the urgency of reigning in unfair insurance industry practices."
But Brian Walsh of the National Republican Senatorial Committee said, "It's interesting to see the President's political machine calling on his supporters to use their Constitutional right to free speech when the White House spent the last week criticizing others for doing the exact same thing. Republicans agree that every American should have the right to voice their opinion in a calm, respectful manner but after the 'astroturfing' rhetoric from the Democrats this week, it's hard to ignore the hypocrisy in this mass email."

I didn't mention that those doctor visits weren't free. The one in France, uh, well, yes, she was free. And the ones in Germany, the primary care physician visit was $12. And he referred me to a endocrinology clinic in Coesfeld, and they were uh, well, free. And the doctor in Holland was free.
Now that I think about it, those doctors must be paid salaries by the government.
And in China, I was able to get a diuretic from a pharmacy for 50 cents, no prescription necessary.

Is the Obama administration consulting with those people who designed and run the most successful health systems? France and Germany come to mind. I was there for a year, paid $9 for health insurance, and in that time saw three doctors the same day or week I called them. And in Holland, I was laid up in bed with a pre-existing problem and my friend was able to get antibiotics for me from a doctor who kept a pharmacy in his office. The pills cost me $3.50.
Where are the people who run those health systems? They should be at the head of the Obama decision table.

I wish Obama or someone knowledgeable bout their proposed plan would go on TV and really explain what they are planning to do. I mean cover it and explain the good side and the negative side of the Plan. Just be honest and tell the good and the bad!
If Obama would sell their plan and be honest it might go over with the public?
But we are not seeing that. We have deception. This is why the people are mad at the Townhall meetings.
If Obama and the Democrates do not explain the Plan with honesty and are able to "jam" the plan through Congress when it is put in place and if the Public sees many of the things the Right is voicing concerns. Things like, abortions paid for, rationing of care, and another cumbersome Government Agency that rules over medical care for the elderly and those who are seriously ill: THEN ALL HELL WILL BREAK OUT ON THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY!!!!
Democrates you better be trueful and honest or you will shoot yourself in the foot politically.
It would be better to not put this plan in place if the public doesn't like it. Then you can sit down and develope something else that is acceptable to the public.

Linda - you speak of the fatcats in Washington. We need to limit how many times these guys can go to Washington. Like the president - 2 terms? and how about Social Security - they say we are running out of money there - I bet their security isn't running out. Why do they have a different one than ours - they need to be on our Social Security too...while we're at it if they push through the healthcare - they need to be on that one too. We'll see what happens to Kennedy and Dodd. Do we forget that they work for us?

'the conservatives ' who exactly are they...?
are saying there never has been a bill passed by the govt. that has been changed or rescinded?

WE've got Medicare. let's clean that up and stay with it. I'm happy with that. We've got people that are suppose to be taking care of that - let them earn their money - Medicare needs to limit Drs. Drs will chg what Medicare will pay. I recently went to a Dr. He didn't know what to say about my problem. Referred me to another Dr. He would only address one thing at a time - after 3 min. he said, watch it and wouldn't answer my question about another thing. Said, make an appointment. They both charged 175.00 for the office visit. I went away not knowing anything except to watch the spot on my chest and make another appt for the other thing. What's with that? And pills - I won't take pills - I'm not sure we need all those pills.

Anybody who thinks that GOVT HealthCare works should stop by the VA Office. Waits of 4-8 months for what should be a routine examination are the NORM. Not to mention the complete comprimise of SSNs, Dates of Birth, and other information protected by the Privacy Act of 1974 impacting several million Active Duty, Retired and dishcarged VETS. I should know, I deal with the VA as a 20 VET.

No heath care with a public option? what is medicad? Are you denied that "public option"? Look at all the plans you can choose from, they are falling all over themselves to get your business. Sr.s probably have the highest occuring health costs, yet our family of 4 are charged $2500 a month that covers no meds or pre-existing conditions. A high price for some well controlled asthma. Pills are another $1000 a month and when the deductible sets in they spend more money trying to disallow everthing. If you take your car to a body shop are you charged 200 times more than the insurance company? Why not? They are not allowed to get away with it, if they were they would have billions to spread lies about how it will hurt us to be treated the same as you with the public option get now!

We are subsidizing medicaid for those who are retired, that new drug plan was not paid for! Bush fired those who put a number to it. We have been paying for a lie of a war at a billion a month that only created new terrorists to train on our troops. Our Drug companies sell drugs developed in our country to Canada, Germany, and France. at a huge discount not offered to Americans. They spend twice on advertizing than they do on research. And many drug studies are conducted at public Universities with tax=payer support. Why can't working families pay what a goverment employee or a retired person pays. Why are we bailing out banks when the leading cause of bankruptcy is due to medical problems not covered by insurance. Insurance companies will insure you until you need it: and then deny coverage or raise rates so high it is more than your salary.
As more and more people are screwed by this practice those who have and deny those who don't look very petty and evil. How do we pay for the bail outs, the war, and your medicad? You aren't covering the costs, you aren't fighting the war and you aren't paying for it either are you?Our kids are! At least let them see a doctor like you can!

Liberals listen up...
Remember, the power in this country constantly flips from one side to the other. Do you really want to give the current government a ton of power, knowing that the conservatives will just inherit that huge power the next time they take office?!?... Think about it!!!
Limiting government power and allowing the citizens to make their own choices is the only way to keep your freedom!
Posted by: RN | Aug 10, 2009 11:20:49 PM
If the government would provide more answers, rather than their over-the-top anti-protest rhetoric, then maybe the citizens would be more open to listening. Instead they try to brainwash us with the same-old talking points - You can keep the coverage you have, blah blah blah...
Well, my question is - what if you try the government program and you don't like it??? Can you get back out of it??? From what I can tell from the very limited information out there, the answer is NO. Once you're in you're in for good (talk about mob mentality). That just isn't OK with me. No choice means no competition, NOT more competition!!!
If you go to their health care site, they have 5 whole questions answered in their FAQ - for a 1000+ page bill!!! What do they think is going to happen if they dribble out tiny amounts of info - all of which is meant to put a positive spin on their plan? They must really have a VERY low opinion of American Citizen's intelligence if they think we are just going to accept their perky little promises, no questions asked!!!
Don't forget, once this bill is passed, there is no going back. They better get it right if they want us to support them!!!

"The only "mob" involved in this debate
is the Chicago Mob of President Obama!
The president and his operatives
Rahm Emanuel, David Axelrod,
Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid better
get this straight!
You will not silence us with your
dictatorial tactics and there will be
No Healthcare Reform that includes a
Public Option!"
------------------------
America's healthcare is ranked 37th (behind Morocco)in the world according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Only someone completely frightened by change of any kind would allow himself to be clouded on the need for real healthcare reform. Dictatorial tactics? This president was overwhelmingly elected by the American people who were mortified by the ignorance and corruption of years of GOP rule. Just because McCain/Palin lost and your loud ilk didn't get their petulant way in November...this doesn't mean there is something nefarious going on here, genius. Just think how often you've been wrong over the past nine years (the wars, two terms of Bush, climate change) and realize this: as usual, you're wrong again. Maybe you just weren't made for these times, Mr. GOP dinosaur. Lead, follow, or get the hell out of the way, whiners.

WHO IS GOING TO PAY FOR THIS, some say they worst of times are over, oh really. These places that say they are now making a profit, have they hired those that were laid off. And will we have jobs for the Military when they come home. I understand everyone needs medical plans, but, WHO IS GOING TO PAY FOR THIS? I'm retired, I pay for my med insurance, I can not afford to have them come back and say we spent to much and now we have to raise taxes. And they will, I just can not trust Congress, look at all the garbage they put in the budget 15M for an airport in a town of 150 people, then these jets, give a break, Congress does what Congress wants they don't care and we the people of this country have to pay they way for their spending habits. IT'S COMING, JUST BE WARE.

"So, if I stop by my local Congressional office to express my opposition to the health care "reform" proposals wending their way through Congress, will I have the option of a "quick conversation with the local staff, tell(ing) [my] personal story?" Or is that a courtesy extended only to supporters? "

I dunno, KJo. I can't even get mine to respond to an email inquiry as to whether or not my Representative plans to hold any town hall meetings. Maybe he's having them in an undisclosed location.

It's been along time since congress looked after the needs of America's people. We all know, democrat, republican , and independent alike that those we vote for and hope for become a part of the good ol' boys in DC. Out to protect themselves. I'd like to have all my health needs taken care and my salary for the rest of my life, wouldn't you?

I think this new feature on ABC News Truth Check, I think its called, is a great idea! However, since we can't trust the media anymore than we can trust our government, what's the point?

All of our elected representatives HAVE nationalized healthcare (that WE pay for, by the way). Not to mention the military and medicare healthcare plans. Those seem to be working too. Besides, you can still opt. to have private insurance if you choose to. It is outrageously expensive for a woman like me, who is self-employed.
I think the competition a public option would provide is essential and possibly the only way to slow down the ridiculous profiteering of the Insurance and Pharma. industries. Anti-monopoly laws are clearly not working...

The money will come partly from not having to pay for people who come to the emergency room for treatment with no coverage. It will come from updating patients records so doctors can see at a moment's notice what had been treated before and it will make the insurance companies be more competitive. They made 12 million dollars last year. Also, I am seeing in my mailbox offers from many health care carriers offering me lots of things to sign up with them. Actually, if you look at this, Obama's plan is starting to work. Insurance companies are getting competitive and offering wonderful things to sign with them. Imagine how much more competitive they will be with health care reform which will not be run by the government just subsidized.
