President Obama’s “Senior” Moment?
August 11, 2009 5:16 PM
Rachel Martin and Jake Tapper report:
President Obama today suggested that the health care reform legislation for which he’s pushing has been endorsed by the American Association of Retired Person.
“We have the AARP on board because they know this is a good deal for our seniors,” the president said.
At another point he said: “Well, first of all, another myth that we've been hearing about is this notion that somehow we're going to be cutting your Medicare benefits. We are not. AARP would not be endorsing a bill if it was undermining Medicare, okay?”
The problem?
The AARP hasn't endorsed any plan yet.
The country's largest advocacy group for Americans over 50 issued a statement after the event saying, "While the President was correct that AARP will not endorse a health care reform bill that would reduce Medicare benefits, indications that we have endorsed any of the major health care reform bills currently under consideration in Congress are inaccurate."
Today’s town hall meeting was quite tame compared to what Democratic members of Congress have been facing in recent weeks.
While hundreds of citizens outside the president’s Portsmouth, NH, town hall were very upset about his health care reform push – they carried signs, they chanted -- inside, it was an altogether different scene.
The President said several times that he wanted to field questions from opponents with real concerns and questions about reform.
After a bunch of rather genial questions, the President said he wanted to call on “somebody here who has a concern about health care that has not been raised, or is skeptical and suspicious and wants to make sure that -- because I don't want people thinking I just have a bunch of plants in here.”
Perhaps the most provocative question came from a woman who brought up concerns about medical panels that would "guide care" according to the administration, the same panels that former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin called Obama's "death panels" which, she speculated, would determine who gets care and who doesn't.
But halfway through her question, the woman, obviously flummoxed, paused. The president said something to the effect of "you're doing fine."
Then the woman turned to the crowd and said coyly, "He winked at me."
And that was from one of the only "skeptics" in the room.
The White House said time and again that they weren't pre-screening audience members. Most people we talked to got their tickets by registering with a White House lottery.

KILL THE BILL NOT GRANNY
Posted by: PEGGY CONNOR | Sep 24, 2009 4:19:43 AM
Mr president, why are you flying around the country ,using tax payers money,to try to convince the people of america that your health bill is good for them? This is not a campain, and this is not a peoples vote. It is a congress vote, and you and the democrats own it,so what are you waiting for? If youi want it so bad, get youir lieing a%% back to Washington and pass the damn bill, and take the responsibility that your were elected for.Or are you just afraid you might get the blame for its failure and then you will not be re-elected.Don`t worry about that because the way you are going, you will be thrown out of office before the next election. The truth about your past, will be displayed by the republicans before the next election. The republicans knew they would lose this election and also know how to get it back. They are not as dumb as most democrats think they are.MAN UP and make your own decissions and take responsibility for those decissions.

Barack Hussien Osama has an agenda, a dream that one day (very soon) the world will have two Frances...one in the european continent the other in north america..and I'm not looking at you canada!

I find it amusing that someone would defend England's single-payer system(i.e. govt. monopoly). It is a national joke. One can read numerous horror stories coming out of that institution weekly. They have had decades to "iron the wrinkles out," but somehow the central planners can't quite get it right. One of the greatest follies of central planning is that the bureaucrats are alwasy applying static solutions to conditions that are inherently dynamic. The problem we have here in the states is all of the govt. involvement through programs, the tax code, mandates, and state insurance monopolies created by our glorious leaders that won't allow individuals to purchase health insurace across state lines. And to the less than bright person who insinuated that everything would be better if Dr.s ran the healthcare leviathon-wouldn't it be better if Dr's weren't spending vast swaths of their time being glorified paper pushers in a bureaucratic hell?!?

A national health system can work and does work, on reason the NHS in Britain is in trouble is because in charge are men in suits not the men in white coats. with the NHS i walk in they treat me for a injury and walk out when i can without anyone telling me what i can and cant do, because i dont need a insurance company telling the doctor what to do.

Hey Winz you whiner. Dont you know that people like you have made this country go down hill because we have all had to succumb to the minority of people who cry and whine about life and how it is sooo unfare that you dont have what others do. (1.9 million dollar homes) Well the solution to that problem used to be go out and work your tail off and pretty soon you will have what others have. If everybody took that HARD WORK Capitalistic approach that we used to, then we as a whole would be a lot better off. Instead the criers and whiners have finally broken through all the way to White House and have succeeded in making people feel bad about who they are by saying things like, "You dont care about anybody but yourself". First of all how do you know if that person does'nt care about others and secondly it is our rights to not give a damn about anything if we dont want to. Thats the beauty of a Capitallistic system. It punishes you if you dont care about working hard and contributing to society. Those that dont make it are the ones who did'nt want to work hard and now those people are the ones on the sidewalks screaming and yelling at thier special interest Acorn type rallies.
By being a good worker and working on your own piece of land and home you then are doing your own part in making society a better place. That is far more valuable than walking around claiming to care about everybody else who you dont know and cant control how they live. You can control your own life and if everybody lived by that credo then believe me society would be far better off than the Liberal Politically Correct Country we have become. Hold yourself accountable before you hold others accountable. Its a much simpler solution and system for people to live under. I know I know, Capitalism is a racist, unforgiving and elitist system. Please! You can be who you want to be under it and thats that!

This message is for Barbara Lyman,
You are kidding right? Politricks in words is the most digusting attribute a President can have. The words are so misleading they are outright lies.
You are a very confused person and we need to rid our country of any voice that would mislead our Nation.
Another lawyer is something we don't need. How can this man help America?

Obama has no idea how to help america. and frankly I don't think he is interested. I will not be participating in aarp if they support this.

The guy lies so much he can't even remember what he lied about.
Pathetic.
We're screwed people!

You are right, the middle class is very much fed up.
This is the middle class that Ms. Fudge is talking about. The premiums for many in the middle class would go up, and quite a few of them don't even make 100,000 thousand a year. Get rid of this bill now. We'll all either be on the public plan or out of a job, because us or employers can pay for this expensive of a premium.
Ms. Fudge
Congressional Record July 20,2009
"Effective in 2013, assistance will be available for individuals and families that fall below the 133 percent to 400 percent of the Federal poverty level. Financial assistance will limit individual and family spending on premiums from a minimum of 1.5 percent of income for those with the lowest income and maxing out at 11 percent of income for those at 400 percent of poverty or more."

"We own 2 homes worth 1.9 million"
You are absolutely, positively the exact class of people that NONE OF THIS DISCUSSION affects. You own 2 homes worth nearly 2 mil and you want to believe you're middle class? Come to my neighborhood and I'll show you REAL middle class. And then you're going to say AARP is too expensive... you ingrateful and out of touch idiot. Try telling that to the couple who barely make $100K combined, have kids and still live in an apartment... and why? Because the entire system is set up to reward the rich and feed the poor and screw everyone else inbetween. Guess what? $100K combined is MIDDLE CLASS.
Poor people get damn near free, albeit less quality, healthcare.
Rich people could give 2 craps because whats a $100 mammogram to a person who has $2 mil in assets?
Screw you and your ignorance. I don't care if you're for or against Obama, what's becoming clearer and clearer in this country is that there is a class war brewing where the wealthy don't give a crap about anyone but themselves; the poor keep taking and taking; while the middle gets nothing. We're supposed to be prideful citizens of the same nation who will do what it takes to take care of each other... well why am I gonna give a crap about your $2 mil homes when you don't give a crap about anyone else? Here's to higher property taxes, I hope you choke on it.

One more comment.
I just signed up for " long term insurance for my husband & I which isn't cheap through AARP and if I find out they back O bama, I'll dump AARP. I'm 62 & he's 58 yrs old. We own 2 homes worth 1.9 million. Our baby boomers aren't dead. We have money! We aren't going to stand by and not protest or just sit in a rocking chair & believe O'bama
He's a " puppet" President with no balls.
He's need to take a long holiday
( 4 years to be exact.
When they do their polls, why am I never asked what I believe??
Where do they get their polls from?????
If they went from house to house, they would find that O'bama is gone!!!
If AARP has ANYTHING to do with BACKING this health care reform ( as it is now ) not only will I dump them but 1/2 of the country will!

I just want to mention that for the first time in my 62 years I am prepared to not only vote ( against the Democrats ) but am ready to get a petition started to oust all of thr greedy, absent minded democrats who don't give a dam about the American people. I'm a member of the DAR and won't stand by to see our rights, freedoms & liberties destroyed!

Which bill Jake?
The President never said the AARP endorsed a bill. The President himself has not endorsed a bill because a completed bill does not exits.
The AARP said the President was correct. Again the AARP said President was correct. Because people contacted the AARP after the townhall, the AARP released a statement clarifying that the Presidents statment was indeed correct and that those thought he implied the AARP endorsed a bill were mistaken. The AARP went on to praise the President and provided a link to their site which supports Health Reform and dispells the myths. Check on the site and you will see that AARP is on board. www.healthactionnow.org.
That does not mean they endorse a specific bill. The President did not say they did.
AP was worse yet, AP ommitted this
“While the President was correct that AARP will not endorse a health care reform bill that would reduce Medicare benefits,
AP intead quotes the second half of sentence below and captilizes the word initiliazation as if it were the begining of a sentence.
"indications that we have endorsed any of the major health care reform bills currently under consideration in Congress are inaccurate."
Highly misleading to say the least.
Perhaps link should be provided to the AARP statement.
AARP Reacts to President’s Health Care Townhall
WASHINGTON – AARP Chief Operating Officer Tom Nelson issued this statement following remarks by the President at a townhall event in New Hampshire on health care reform.
“AARP has been working with Democrats and Republicans to fix our broken health care system.
“While the President was correct that AARP will not endorse a health care reform bill that would reduce Medicare benefits, indications that we have endorsed any of the major health care reform bills currently under consideration in Congress are inaccurate.
“AARP supports specific measures that would help older Americans and their families – including bipartisan proposals to create a new follow-up care benefit in Medicare that would help prevent hospital re-admissions, as well as to address the Medicare prescription drug coverage gap known as the ‘doughnut hole.’ We also support the need for lawmakers and the Administration to act this year to fix what doesn’t work in the health care system.
“We share the President’s commitment to act this year, and our members appreciate his insistence that any final reform package will not reduce Medicare benefits for the millions of people that literally depend on that program as a lifeline.
“We look forward to working with leaders of both parties, including the President, to build a final package we could endorse that addresses the concerns of the 50-plus population and brings quality, affordable health care choices to every American.”

If this health care bill is so grand, how come the house shot down the idea that if the bill passes, then they too will use the same insurance as joe everyman? You think they want to give up their sweet a** insurance? No and i dont either. The insurance benefits i get from my job are part of my salary, i earn them when i work. If we get socialized health care do you think i am going to see that extra 8k a year that my employer pays so i can have nice health care? I dont think so. I hate career politicians, they just dont know what the real world is like. You cant see it from your pedestal. And you cant see it going into a ghetto in chicago twice a year. Come live in it for a couple years then tell me whats good for me.
