Biden on 2010: If GOP Succeeds, It’s ‘The End of the Road for What Barack and I Are Trying to Do’

ABC News’ Karen Travers reports:

Vice President Joe Biden said today that if Democrats were to lose 35 House seats they currently hold in traditionally Republican districts, it would mean doomsday for President Obama’s agenda.

Biden said Republicans are pinning their political strategy on flipping these seats.

“If they take them back, this the end of the road for what Barack and I are trying to do,” the vice president said at a fundraiser for Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) today in Greenville, Delaware.

Republicans need to pick up 40 seats next November to take back control of the House.

There are 49 seats currently held by Democrats in districts that Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz) won in last year’s presidential election.

Biden said these House seats are Republicans “one shot” at breaking the Obama administration’s agenda. But if Democrats can hold on to those seats, “the dam is going to break,” he said, and a new era of bipartisanship will begin.

“All the hidden Republicans that don’t have the courage to vote the way they want to vote because of pressure from the party … it will break the dam and you will see bipartisanship,” Biden said.

Republicans welcomed the vice president’s assessment of the 2010 landscape.

“What didn’t seem possible just a few months ago, appears to be the topic of conversation even within the upper echelons of the Obama White House,” said Ken Spain, spokesman for the National Republican Congressional Committee. “It is interesting to hear Vice President Biden admit that the administration’s effort to double down on a partisan agenda of government takeovers could possibly mean the ‘end of the road’ for their political viability.”

Knowing that 2010 is going to be a tough year for defending their own turf, Democrats are hoping to stay on offense in several House districts held by Republicans, including Jim Gerlach of Pennsylvania, Mike Castle of Delaware, Mary Bono Mack of California and Joseph Cao of Louisiana.

“From day one, Democrats said this is a challenging cycle but we're aggressively tackling that challenge with outstanding Frontline Members and by putting additional Republican seats in play,” said Jennifer Crider, spokeswoman for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, referring to the most vulnerable Democoratic incumbents. “Republicans have banked on failure by opposing common-sense measures to get the economy back on track and health insurance reform.”

Biden’s comments came at a fundraiser for Giffords, a Blue Dog Democrat who was first elected in 2006 to represent a district that had been Republican since 2000.

As an American living and working overseas -- I find it appalling and disturbing to witness the "Uncivil War" that is occuring within the US between the extreme left and the extreme right. Surely there are a few sensible people left who recognize the solutions are to be found more towards the center.

Reducing taxes and regulation are not going to cure the economy. For those of you ideologues who believe this and the free market will self-correct, time to do your homework. If you liked what the financial industry has done to you, you will love what the pharmaceuticals and private health organzations will do without adequate reform. No allowing companies to compete across statelines is not the answer - eventually one of the competitors will "win", and then look out.

For those of you ideologues who believe that government can solve all of societies major problems you need to look closer to home. There are many things, that no matter how much money and effort are thrown at the issue, they will not be resolved. Take drug addition, STD's, over-extension on credit, etc., etc. Continuing down this road on spending levels will result in US workers being the preferred "oursouce" destination for cheap labor by rising Asian corporations and economies.

Wake up middle America -- you need to get your republican representatives to fire Frank Lund and in incendiary use of language that polarizes the needed dialogue necessary for democracy to work.

Similarly, for those of you (me included) on the left -- it is time to have our democrat representatives stop squandering our children's and grandchildren's future.

Gee, Obama campaigned on the basis that he is a consensus builder. He could reach across the aisle and the Republicans would be thrilled to partner with him. Bull! A giant in his own mind, Obama pulled the wool over the democratic intellectuals and now he can't produce Republicans in any number. He boasts about one republican who crossed the aisle after the healthcare vote was won. Big freakin' consensus, Mr. President - I bet you think that's a mandate too. Can't wait to hear him describe the benefits of deficit spending again.

Power? Do we want people to suffer? Why is war an alternative? Is there a country that we are at war with? I think it's more like a group of people. Where is the money coming from to pay for the war? We don't have money in America. We owe a lot of it to China.

Should we want our people to have health insurance? Maybe we should spend money against Russia and build defense systems to protect Europe.

Should we put our soldiers in harms way when there is no assurance of victory?

Do you know someone who's been to war and back? Do you know someone who can't afford to see a doctor? Should your tax money go towards more war or towards a system that can lower health insurance? Are you an American? Maybe your a Democrat or a Republican? Are we one nation united or divided? Do you feel angry? Don't allow hate to be your identity. America will remain the country of the free. You and Me. I'm for Obama. Do you hate?

Joe - dahhh....you mean you finally get it? You are absolutely right. It WILL be the end of the road for what you and Barrack are trying to do. Which is exactly what, again??? Ruin the country?

No one wants increased debt or deficits! I guess that means the current administration (like the ones in the past) are over. Time to get real America.

If it puts an end to the ridiculousness now occurring ... GOOD!!!

Obama and Biden are heading America at breakneck speed down a DEAD END road!. We can all see the "NO OUTLET" signs as we speed by.

A GOP victory in 2010 would be a swerve back on to freedom highway.

So, Mr. Biden, the end of the road for you and Barry simply cannot come too soon.

Both the Democrats and Republicans practice Fascism. Obama is merely Bush on steroids. Both have pretty much used the Constitution the founding fathers gave us as a snot rag. Let's give the Constitution Party the vote in 2010 and 2012. Please, stop telling true conservatives "where were you" when Bush was in power? I was seething with anger over prescription drugs, illegal immigration, no child left behind, etc. My question to you is, where were you stupid liberals and why didn't you support Bush when he expanded government and did your bidding for you? He was stupid in that he tried to reach out to Democrats and basically gave them what they wanted and they still hated him. That tells Conservatives, when we get back power, and we will because these things go in cycles, no need to reach out to the 20 percent cook liberals. No need to.

The is nothing more frightening that Republicans with power. They will wage religious war. They will destroy the environment. They will set women's rights and race relations back 200 years. They'll be lucky if they don't start a race war in America."

I know of no conservative who has racist views. You voted for a candidate because he was black, face it if Obama were white, Hillary would be president.

As for women, all conservatives as a rule admire powe3rful intelligent women, but its conservative women who are attractive as well. Liberal women, being jealous of this fact make up claims of racism and sexism. Idiots like you parrot their lies.
Race war ?? Get over it. Obama has divided us along racial lines and has set back race relations 150 years.

Frightening ? frightening is the illegal firing of CEOS, illegal takeover of corporations and banks, attempting to put Fox News (the ony fair and balanced news network in existence) out of business, gun control, etc. Hugo Chavez, Hitler, Castro and Mao would have and are certainly proud of Obama.

I like the way Biden says that if the Democratic/Socialist party keeps control, THEN we will see bipartisinship. They have control of both houses AND the White House and all we are seeing is a quagmire of debt.....In the midst of a recession. As for you Bush blamers out there....SHUT UP! Good God! The man is out of office. It just shows how ignorant you people are to continue with the Bush bashing. As for both sides of the fence, you are both idiotic if you do not see the necessity for both the liberal and conservative view. They balance each other out and insure freedom. A one party system only insures a different kind of totalitarianism. There will NEVER be bipartisanship as long as there is such an animal as a career politician. TERM LIMITS!!!!!!

I thought the new age of bipartisanship was supposed to begin when Obama was sworn in?

Posted by: Tracy | Nov 13, 2009 8:41:20 AM

End of the road for them but, the next regime will pick up right where they left off. It seems that no matter who the President is or what party is in office, the same crap would be going on.

I believe there's a lot more at work here. Call it conspiracy if you want but, it's becoming quite apparent.

@mike - no, you obviously don't know what fascism is. you may think you do, but you don't. yes bush, is a fascist. his entire family is connected to the british royals, and are involved in a number of treasonous activities. his grand father, prescott bush helped organize the bailout of the nazi party with his british counterparts.

the following are some examples of fascism so you understand it better: fascism is $25 trillion bank bailouts, fascism is allowing media companies to merge and merge and dominate public opinion, fascism is cap and trade, carbon tax... taxing a harmless gas, fascism is allowing unbridled speculation and supporting that over our physical economy, fascism is letting these hedge funds, investment banks in london and wall street make all the shots and derail our efforts at recovery. fascism is this green nonsense, fascism is global warming... fascism is population control, fascism is world government, i can go on but i choose to leave it here... take this quote as my parting gift.

"Fascism should more properly be called corporatism because it is the merger of state and corporate power." -- Benito Mussolini (Former Italian Fascist Dictator, words right out of the horse's mouth).

Congress Controlled the purse strings and money since 2006... not Bush. Learn basic govt, maybe we can talk after that. You cannot intellectually argue that Bush (or any sitting President) could really cause, or stop for that matter, a housing bubble/bust.

Posted by: Landin | Nov 10, 2009 10:50:12 AM

all democrats have been doing since s*** really hit the fan is blame bush for everything. not one has mentioned that obama is the first president to raise taxes during a recession since herbert hoover (the man who caused the great depression) and don't think he hasn't taxed the poor either. all the cigarette taxes, cap and trade, alcohol taxes, and the soda tax thats trying to be pushed through all affect the poor class way more than the upper class. And as far as Bush goes, yes he was listed as a republican but he did not follow standard republican principals of strong conservatism, low taxes and as little government intervention in our lives as possible. And also, quit calling them fascists because you obviously don't understand what a fascist is. Fascism is strong government control such as the nazi's which bush wasn't. the only strong government he ever did was the patriot act which has actually saved lives on several occasions and you were only targeted by it if you were a suspected terrorist which isn't an insult that is just thrown around by the government. you have to do something to be linked to terrorist activities. Other than that there is not one example of him being a "fascist".

I'm hopeful that the tea party movement will lead to the Democrats actually picking up votes in the House.

Also, this article says there are 49 Democratic congressmen in districts McCain won... but there must be Republicans in districts Obama won too, right? How many?

There are two types of sensible people, the first is a rich person who is conservative, and most likely Republican. The second group is made up of people who might be wealthy and possess a social conscience, most of these are Democrats and Liberals.

Then there is the group that is too darn stupid for their own good. These are mostly nuovo less than middle class working people, mostly Southerners who dont have a pot to pee in, much less a window to pitch it out of, but, decide that they need to support consevatives and republicans.
