Marching Down Pennsylvania Avenue

September 12, 2009 7:32 PM

ABC News’ Yunji de Nies Reports:

The 912 Marchers certainly made a splash in Washington.  With costumes, signs and a bevy of American flags, they gathered at Freedom Plaza Saturday morning, before descending down Pennsylvania Avenue.  Washington, D.C., officials estimate between 60,000 and 75,000 people attended the day-long event, which ended with a rally at the Capitol steps.

They came from around the country.  Stephanie Crise and her family flew in from Dallas, Texas.  Her elementary school-aged daughter was dressed as lady liberty and carried a sign that read “Stop Spending my Future.”  Crise wore a large “Uncle Sam” hat and had her own sign with the message “Turn back to God and our Constitution.”

“We're true hot blooded Americans and concerned about what's going on in our government,” Crise said. “We’re worried about the spending.  We’re worried the corruption that’s happening.  We’re worried the lies we’re getting.”

The groups mistrust of seemingly anyone in public office -- spare Congressman Joe Wilson -- was evidenced on signs throughout, lambasting Democrats from Senators Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, and Chuck Schumer, to the first lady and of course, President Obama himself.

“Every Democratic politician is working for the mafia,” said Charles Sherwood, as he handed out American flags. “The Democrats are destroying the country.”

Michael Gibbs, who arrived from Ohio, shouted that the President should “Go back to Kenya!” and repeatedly chanted that Mr. Obama was a “communist.”  Gibbs, who is presumably not related to the President’s press secretary, Robert Gibbs, held a large banner, declaring: “If it sounds like Marx and acts like Stalin, it’s probably Obama.”

Gibbs explained, “I believe he's not only a communist but you just have to look at the people he's brought in as czars. And look at the things he's doing. He wants to control everything.”

Some signs seemed downright cruel, one declared “Bury ObamaCare with Kennedy,” a reference to the recent death of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, who championed health care reform throughout his political life.

But most in the crowd insisted that they’re not extremist.

“We've been mischaracterized as a mob, as terrorist, as racists, gangsters, as any other negative name that you could come up with, when really we're just Americans who are fed up,” said Darren Inge of Texas.

Many seemed surprised that ABC News was there to cover the event and some asked why the “All Barack Channel” would bother to show up.

The marchers’ message was aimed squarely at the President, but his helicopter flying overhead was as close as they came to any direct contact.  Mr. Obama held a health care rally of his own, thousands of miles away in Minneapolis.

There, he told a much more supportive crowd to join him in the fight for health care reform.

“It begins with you sharing your stories, fighting for something better, that's how change happens,” he said. “I don't know if you agree with me, but I think the time for bickering is over. The time for games has passed.  Now is the time for action.  Now is the time to deliver on health care for every American.”

The White House had no comment on the rally in Washington.  An aide instead referred reporters back to the president’s own rally, “as that was the focus of his effort to reform the health insurance system Saturday.”

Isabel - again, you've provided quite a lot to comment on.
First of all, it's good to hear that you are proud to be a part of this nation. And on that much, we can definitely agree.

You have concerns about the health of those who cannot afford medical attention.
I have those concerns, as well.
And I doubt anyone here would wish ill of your grandmother, or others who are in dire need of care.

It is the law that those in need of medical attention, must be treated.
But, we are not a nation of millionaires, either.
And the costs resulting from the patient who is unable to pay their bill, is passed on to everyone.

Higher costs for everything from a simple visit to the doctor, to the price of medication, to the daily charges for a hospital stay, to the rising cost of health insurance premiums --
all are directly related to the patient who could not pay.

In California, for instance -- 84 hospitals have recently closed, due to financial difficulty.
Each of those hospitals had treated so many destitute patients -- many of which were here illegally --
that the facilities were unable to remain open.

Needless to say, there are citizens who have already died, due to a lack of timely treatment.
When seconds matter, the proximity of a hospital can be a life or death issue.

Neither of us could make the argument that one life is more important than another.
In my case, at least, I would consider that a decision best left to God.

Still, we are often required to make some pretty tough decisions, ourselves.
And as we are also human, our decision-making skills are not perfect.

And that's why we have "laws."

Because, laws are the very closest that man can come to making the fairest, and most just decisions for all involved.

In this country, anyone in need of medical help should, and will receive it.
And your visiting grandmother is no exception.

But, as for the illegal immigrant worker who has been injured -- were that worker here legally, state compensation would have covered the costs of the injury, and loss of wages.

Yet, that worker will still get medical treatment, even though he or she has broken the law, and are here illegally.

And, although I agree that those employing illegal immigrants are taking advantage of the worker -- the illegal worker is also taking advantage of the situation, and a country where all are expected to abide by the law of the land.

Isabel, the world is full of good people, many of whom would love to come to America.
And many do, through legal immigration.

So, what if we abolished all of our immigration laws, and just invited everyone to move here?
Wouldn't that be a great opportunity for so many good people, who deserve a better life?

Think about that.

That's exactly why we have immigration quotas, and why a certain number of people, from various parts of the world, are allowed to come here, each year.
Otherwise, our country would quickly become far worse a place to live, than the place most immigrants had left.

Of course, that would make the U.S. equal to those other countries, wouldn't it?

But then, where would you and I go...for a better life?

Finally, regarding your closing comments about the pending Medicare Prescription Drug legislation -- sadly, I doubt that the extension will be passed.
And even if it does, the "Obama Plan" would actually cancel most, if not all of Bush's prescription drug benefits....and perhaps, the entire Medicare program.

Obama has already stated that he intends to cancel the Medicare Advantage program...one in which nearly 55% of our Medicare recipients currently participate.

Otherwise, the money just isn't available for the "Obama Plan."
Even he has admitted that his "Plan" might require cutting as much as $500 billion from Medicare benefits.
And raising our individual income taxes an average 16%, is also being considered.

Politics aside...Obama's "Plan" is simply not affordable.
And that's not even the worst of it!

The rallies and marches aren't just about money.
People are much more concerned about our country....
and where those in power are taking us.

You have it all wrong.. I am 100 percent proud of my nation.. I was born here, and like you my family ""They were proud, hard-working people, and were happy to just be able to live in freedom!"

My family luckily was able to stand on their two feet, and never needed any sort of assistance from our government....

However, I made that comment based on U.S. CITIZENS... who don't go to a doctor because they lack insurance and can't afford being sick.....

I made the comment on the illegal immigrants that get hired by companies to work for nothing.. but i'm not hear to get into the labor conditions of our nation...

i ask you and anyone else who is reading this..... does an illegal immigrant who does the "dirty jobs".. not deserve to be taken care of if htey get hurt on the job? If they get sick and just want to get better to get back to work....
or should we just send them back home because they got injured on the job...

I live in a district where everyday i see people waiting on a corner for a job.. for construction companies to come by and pick them up .. to not have to pay minimum wage....most of the Illegal immigrants in our nation have the SAME mentality your parents did and my parents did.....

I also wanted to ask you this... what about U.S. citizens that are on unemployment that don't go out looking for a job everyday, because they have that safety net from my taxes, while I'm lucky to work a 9-5 job... what about the people that will turn down a job because their pay doesn't match up to their unemployment and so it doesn't benefit them to get off unemployment... so instead of letting hta tmoney go to people who REALLY need it.. they just abuse it.

and on a side note.. most illegal immigrants do not go to doctors, or hospitals in fear of being caught and deported... in a case of an emergency i would assume they would go to a hospital.. but by law.. NO ONE is to be turned away.. citizen or not...

I'd like to share a personal story ... my grandmother became ill and needed a peacemaker... she is not a U.S. Citizen ...My family and I are... she was visting got ill and needed a peacemaker... I ask .. What do you think would of been the best course of action .....I'm curious...

One final note, I am greatful and PROUD to be from the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. I just battle moral standards against politics everyday of my life.

A little extra info...

"The Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement and Modernization Act of 2003, which contained Sec. 1011 authorizing $250,000 annually between 2003 and 2008 for government reimbursements to hospitals who provide treatment for uninsured illegal immigrants. The program has been extended through 2009 and there is currently a bipartisan bill in Congress to make it permanent."

Well said!
We held a HUGE local 9-12 Rally, with live video feed to the bigger ones.
And the latest count of the D.C. attendance I'm hearing is about 1.7 million!
That number has been comprised from a combination of a) the 2+ hour long video of the crowd streaming up Pennsylvania Ave.; b) statements made by at least 3 different Park Service agents -- who claimed the march was the largest crowd ever to gather on the grounds of the Capital; and c) a computer calculation of the crowd's size, reported by one of our university research teams.

So, yes....the 9-12 Rally may well have been the biggest gathering, so far!
LBJ Inauguration.(1.2 mil)
"Million Man March" (838,000)
Even the Obama Inauguration fell short of previous estimates. Although NPS has yet to release an official count, it was well under 2 million.

So, if another D.C. rally becomes necessary (plans are already in the works)....it could go down in history as the "50 Million Mad March." ;)

Isabel, you are not being fair in your comments about this country.
My grandparents came here as immigrants, and were given nothing.
But then, they didn't expect their new host to feed, clothe, house, educate and medicate them, either.
They were proud, hard-working people, and were happy to just be able to live in freedom!

And that is exactly what this country was founded upon -- the hunger to live free!
And the true immigrant is one who comes to the U.S. in order to contribute to this great country --
NOT to turn it into a facsimile of the very place they had fled!

The LEGAL immigrant is offered the same benefits that poor American citizens receive (welfare, food stamps, subsidized housing, etc.) -- and in some cases, even more benefits than poor Americans can get.
Certain social programs we offer provide the immigrant with a free college tuition, for instance...or, interest-free loans for starting their own small business.

Ask the next American-born citizen you meet, if they've ever been offered such assistance?!

So, even though most proud Americans can sympathize with your comments, Isabel --
you've conveyed a very warped assessment of who Americans really are, and what Americans really do.

As one who has worked with "green card" immigrants, myself, since back in the early 1970's --
helping them to secure solid employment, and decent housing --
I can attest that your comments are not based upon an accurate accounting of America, and what we've provided to those who come here through the proper channels, following the very same dream upon which this country was first founded!

To be honest, Isabel, your criticisms smack of someone who despises this country, rather than someone who has come here to become an asset to it.

There's an old proverb --
"Give a man a fish, and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he eats for a lifetime."

Many different groups have recently come together, from across this land, in order to make the very same statement.

Americans are a teach a man to fish" people.
Yet, Obama, and those of his ilk are the "give a man a fish" people.

And even that difference might go unchallenged, were Obama not also trying to take total control over the whole damned fishing lake.

Even if only 75,000 people were marching on 912, that only represents a portion of the people that feel the same way the protestors in DC did! I mean, come on, there were 200 other tea parties just THAT DAY ALONE across the country... what about all the people who have families and jobs and can't make it, but wish they could have! You doubters fuel our fire, so keep it coming!

Posted by: alisdre6as | Sep 16, 2009 11:21:10 PM

People protest over the USA helping groups of people who happen to not be from this country.... yet they were happy to stay at home while the USA threws away plenty of more money in Iraq this past 9 years and counting...while the american death toll climbs to five thousand and the number of Iraqi dead has eclipsed two hundred thousand..

I ask this why not help those who need it and stop playing hyppocrite, because in the end we all live and die together on this world!

"One thing I learned in psy ops training is that when you are doing well the opposition starts sputtering, name calling, marginalizing, ranting and generally running out of meaningful vocabulary."

I'll bet Ed doesn't see the irony in this statement at all. :-)

I hate to burst some bubbles, but those people marching weren't just republicans.

One thing I learned in psy ops training is that when you are doing well the opposition starts sputtering, name calling, marginalizing, ranting and generally running out of meaningful vocabulary.

I think we are starting to be heard, keep up the good work patriots! Just say no to Obamacare!

"The White House had no comment on the rally in Washington. An aide instead referred reporters back to the president’s own rally."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As if the W.H. isn't well aware of the 9-12 D.C. Rally, and the sheer numbers involved!
That's probably why Obama was off to Minneapolis, speaking to yet another of his captive audiences.
Indeed, it's quite telling that Obama is touring the country, preaching to only his already singing choir-boys and girls.
Unions? The AFL-CIO? C'mon!
How can they even raise a legitimate question? They've already received their "stimulus!"
But, whenever 1 million+ private citizens of all colors, all ages, and from all walks of life, should gather for one specific purpose --
that of having their legitimate concerns heard by Congress, and the W.H. --
you can bet your behind that Obama is paying very close attention!
Yet, he'll continue to schedule countless more of his "preaching to the choir" events.
He needs those cheering audiences for the media coverage, and to include in his health care ads.
And he deserves them, too.
After all...we, the American taxpayers, have already bought those groups for him.
Not to change the subject, but....
I've trained my dog to bark for a biscuit.
Isn't that neat? :)
No spin. The most staunch conservatives who post on these blogs consider Rasmussen the most accurate pollster. The information I provided was copied verbitim from the Rasmussen website.
Obama’s Approval Index at Rasmussen (the choice pollster of conservatives) was at -3 yesterday; the best in 2 months. Today’s overall approval rating was evenly split at 50% Approve and 50% Disapprove.
The RCP average currently stands at 53.2% Approve, 44.2% Disapprove.
A reporter from Florida had a professional camera crew that documented the crowds as they filled Pennsylvania Avenue, the side streets and the mall. The report was that 450 chartered buses (50 passenger) which had to register for the event were there, plus the church vans, private vans, the private vehicles that came into the metro lots, locals that came in by metro and those that flew in and used metro.
This reporter estimates 1.5 million and has interviews with park police about it. The reporter is going to release a DVD so all will be able to see the camera pan over the crowds and the various interviews with people. Apparently the Nazi sign was a freak and the event was much more orderly that the Obamedia would have us to believe.
The president pretended he wasn't aware of the event and spent $400-$500K of our dwindling money to go to a union picnic in Minneapolis. ABC had a story on that, but it was mysteriously pulled???
We'll see if he appears at the upcoming Muslim event!!!
I don't know how to call attention to the DVD when it is released so that all that want it can find it. Any suggestions out there?
Every other network has finally admitted there were HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS who marched on 9/12. I wonder why ABC is having such a hard time admitting it?
Posted by: jennifert7
it's a lie........ msnbc, cnn, abc, I heard them call the amount in the 10's of thousands, around 60 to 70k........ are you folks that desperate and insecure that you need to radically inflate the turnout and use images from other events to claim as your own?
This was your 'big event'... what happened?
Posted by: 007 | Sep 15, 2009 1:12:13 AM
The story that cracks me up is the one at Politifact titled "Tea party" photo shows huge crowd — at different event (twelve years ago!) It cracks me up that there is this incessant need to lie about the numbers.
Pants on fire!
I was soooo happy with I was one of 75,000 Marchers who are main stream American in the 912 march. Even though I had to wake up 3:00 am to arrive at 10 am in the Capital in DC. My Rally's Sign was;
"STOP PRINTING US$1,000,000,000,000.00″
"STOP BORROWING MONEY FROM COMMUNISM COUNTRY,CHINA"
"STOP AIDING HAMAS TERRORIST GROUP, US840,000,000 AND ABORTION TO ABROAD US100,000,000.00″
"STOP SPENDING TOO MUCH MONEY"
I don't expect any more to have hope for America from Obama's rhetorical speech, but I could realize that real hope for America would come from 75,000 Marchers.
