Pelosi and Reid Tell President: We Have the Votes; President Wants Bill Passed Soon

September 08, 2009 6:20 PM

While White House spokesman Robert Gibbs today refrained from telling reporters whether President Obama in his speech Wednesday night will set a deadline for passing health care reform, sources tell ABC News that in his private meeting with Democratic congressional leaders this afternoon the key word was urgency.

The president told House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., that it is important for them to pass health care reform bills soon, the sources said.

Both leaders told the president that despite the difficult rough and tumble of the legislative process in the last few weeks, they are optimistic that both the House and Senate can pass health care reform legislation.

What will be in the bill remains an open question, though after the meeting, Reid told reporters that “we're going to do our very best to have a public option or something like a public option before we finish this work.”

This public option deal is a farce to show some type of victory, but is it a victory for us, or for all the other parts of the health care dilemna. When things go wrong in my house, my kids can always legitimately point the finger at the other kid, just like every one pointing at the insurance industry, but it doesn't fix what they do wrong. There is a lot of blame in this whole system, and to smash the insurance cos. without addressing all the other problems will just make things worse, at the expense of the middle class VOTERS.

Okay you cram this down my throat you better be on this coverag instantly and forever with not Ted Kenney optionn to opt out. The US citizens will keep tabs on how you voted and the next election there will be changes... 2 November 2010... This country cannot afford the program, stop spending, now. The head of Japanese banking is saying if we go forward with our spending the US dollar will lose 1/2 of its value in two years. I cannot afford this, and I am sure many more cannot either...

All of the legislators running this country need to be replaced. No one is listening to the people of this Grest Country!! It seems like all the news media is afraid to question the goverment on important issues & I'm refering to the liberal media. My wife & I are registered Democrates but not for long!! I'm a Vietnam Veteran & proud of my service to my country so I guess FOX News is the only real news media out there??? Very dissappointed!!

The only people that needs to be voting on this is THE AMERICAN PEOPLE !!!! It's our tax paying money and we should be the ones to vote with what to do with it-----NOT the money hungry idiots in Washington!!!!!!!

890 Billion dollars to pick up 4% of the population, works out to about $75,000.00 per person, yikes, a family of four $300,000.00.00, for ten years, what happens after the first ten years? To put the whole country on this plan it would cost, 22.5 Trillion Dollars. It will not matter if the POTUS is illegally in office would it?

Reid and Pelosi have the votes??? Now I might be worried if either one of them could count past 10!

Nancy Pelosi is disgusting - but then so are a lot of the people in Congress. What's their approval rating, something around 24%?

I wonder of HealthCare reform will end up Like Gitmo.- Can't change it so it's still there like always.

This serves us right for electing so many democrats into Congress and into the WHite House.

Can any of us be surprised? We knew what we were getting with Obama mixed with Reid and Pelosi and a majority in both houses.

Perhaps this will help us return to our Constitutional roots or perhaps we are on a road that can't be turned back...

This bill will lead to unemployment. Any congressman that supports it will have to find another job (and perhaps residence) at election time. BRING IT ON!

They are about to make a hugh mistake with this horrible bill, but they are not effected. The reason.....Obama needs a bill to sign for his political career and he wants it fast. For all of you that want the same thing for Obama, I hope you live long enough to explain to your children that you blindly followed, thats why their future is poor. I of course want reform, but this is not reform, this is politics at any cost.

"republicans sign up for the public option, like they do with SS and medicare"...tell me what's wrong with that statement...Bueller?? You don't "sign up" for SS and medicare, it's withdrawn from your paycheck all of your working life. I realize that many who voted for Obama don't understand what "working for a living" means, but feel free to Google it!! And as far as the "Signing Up" for the public option...in their usual, My Way or the Highway approach, the Democrats plan on fining thousands of dollars, or up to one year in jail, anyone who does'nt toe the line on Obamacare!! Oh, and Republicans not going for SS and medicare...tell me, how are those programs working out money-wise?

The best thing about me being a OLD MAN is that even with the domestic turmoil, wars, and etc of the last fifty years I have enjoyed a time in America that was always with hope. Because of our strenght economically and militarily if you had your health you could succeed. Now I see us going into the third world style debt with third world type polticians in control. We vote for a good speaker to hell with his history and we think we can recover from any foolishness that becomes law. We appoint Federal Judges who rule by convicton rather then Constition. Federal judges alone could be our demise if not for all the other crazy stuff going on. I will soon be in heaven watching you cope good luck.

We need health care reform but the bills as they are is not what we need. For all those who posted give the people what they want, only 48% want this passed as is it is according to polls. Many of us want reform but take the time to read the bills and then give majority what they want. Over half of us do NOT want this shoved down our throats.

Keep your eye on every politician who votes for this socialistic plan and make sure we vote him/her out of office!!
It is a sure fact to the American people that Peolsi and Obama have got to go!!!
I voted for this fool just because of my hatred for Bush and his agenda.....
what the heck did I do !!!!!

Congress will never reach any agreement on this issue. The american people will end up with the carnage that they leave behind. They could take one big problem though and turn it into a whole bunch of little questions. Here's a simple one: How do Canadians buy Old Republican's blood pressure medicine for $24.95? He has to pay $122.00 for it and it's made right here in the USA.

Posted by: Old Republican | Sep 18, 2009 7:51:32 AM

Anytime you have insurers, pharma and the AMA lining up to offer their help you need to think about it. Let's see...they want to help us find a way to help them earn fewer dollars. Here's one - my job sucks because because they pay me too much. I deserve a job where I make less. Same logic. Hmmm.
