President Obama Accepts Wilson’s Apology, Says He Hopes the Political "Fever Breaks a Little Bit"
September 10, 2009 1:04 PM
Jake Tapper and Sunlen Miller report:After what he called an "excellent and informative Cabinet meeting," President Obama told reporters that he accepts the apology of Rep. Joe Wilson, R-SC, who shouted "You lie!" during the president’s address to a joint session of Congress last night.
"Yes I do," the president said. "I’m a big believer that we all make mistakes. He apologized quickly and without equivocation. And I’m appreciative of that."
Mr. Obama then turned to use Wilson as something of an example – making this a teachable moment, perhaps – saying that "we have to get to the point where we can have a conversation about big, important issues that matter to the American people without vitriol, without name-calling without the assumption of the worst in other people’s motives."
The president suggested that while Democrats and Republicans have "different ideas…for the most part we have the same aims, which is to make sure people who work hard…and act responsibility, are able to get good jobs, good wages, raise their families, make sure those kids have a good education, that they are protected from misfortune or accident by having health care and retirement security in place." He also said keeping the American people safe.
He said when it comes to party affiliation, "most Americans don think about those labels that much. They are turned off when they see people using wild accusations, false claims, name-calling, and sharply ideological approaches to solving problems. They want pragmatism."
The president said he hopes "some of the fever breaks a little bit," and he admonished the media to be helpful by "not giving all the attention to the loudest and shrillest voices."
The cabinet meeting was largely about health care reform, the president said, though Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates briefed the president on national security, while Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner discussed the "promise and peril of our current economic situation."

The hypocrisy is stunning. I would call it disappointing, but my expectations are not that high.

Someone on the right points fingers about demonization and hypocrisy??? I find that pretty darned funny. My point was, really, would the right, or more specifically people like Glenn Beck, be hypocritical and defend or praise him despite radical associations or be every bit as concerned about him and his associations as they are about those on the left with radical associations. Guess we've found out-- and that hypocrisy doesn't surprise me either. Why do I have the feeling you haven't called those on the right for the same sorts of things? I personally don't believe in guilt by association. I think he's a jerk, but he certainly wouldn't be the first in Congress. He'd get royally ripped in a presidential run, however.

"And I came across THIS bit of information about Joe the Wilson"
And so the "Joe the Plumber/Sarah Palin Demonization" begins... Classy...
BTW, Joe Wilson says two words ("You lie") and it is as if this type of behavior (speaking out against sitting president in address to Congress) is completely unheard of... I guess y'all are just conveniently sweeping under the rug THE BEHAVIOR OF DEMOCRATS AT THE 2005 STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS.
The hypocrisy is stunning. I would call it disappointing, but my expectations are not that high.

@ Ryan C
"You just posted that our total tax rate ranked 67th out of 129 countries claiming our taxes were too high. But I see you're flailing about now."
Sure, if all we want is an "average" economy rather than a world leader. #67 will do just fine.
Your hero Obama and his cronies doesn't believe in American exceptionalism, so it is not a surprise that you do not either.

The central fact that Obama is a liar seems to have been lost.

Joe Wison should have thrown his shoe at Obama......the "Master of Deception".

who were the 2 guys with the hate on their faces to Wilsons left and right?

Does Rep Wilson reside at CStreet? I don't think he shouted in a heat of the moment. I think he had other motives.

TPM also posted how he blasted Strom Thurmond's illegitimate (and African American) daughter for being a liar then after apologizing for that he still said she should have kept quiet.

TPM also posted how he blasted Strom Thurmond's illegitimate (and African American) daughter for being a liar then after apologizing for that he still said she should have kept quiet.
"Rep. Wilson, a former page of Thurmond's, immediately told The State newspaper that he didn't believe Williams. He deemed the revelation "unseemly." And he added that even if she was telling the truth, she should have kept the inconvenient facts to herself:
"It's a smear on the image that [Thurmond] has as a person of high integrity who has been so loyal to the people of South Carolina," Wilson said."
Those Southern Republicans really miss the segregation days.

"Wow. That's awesome. I didn't expect that in such a consistently red state though I'm unfamiliar with the district."
Its a very red district.
Wilson has run unopposed and virtually unopposed (his Dem opponent raised all of $12K against him).
Miller was the first to really give him a run.
Is Wilson in trouble? Not yet but half a million in a Congressional race is nothing to sneeze at.
Also I agree with you on the energizing of a base that seemed uninterested in a fight.

And I came across THIS bit of information about Joe the Wilson:
Looking into the background of Rep. Joe Wilson, R-South Carolina, after his heckling of President Obama last night, I came across this, he's a member or has been a member of Sons of Confederate Veterans. Per David Niewart at Crooks and Liars, "This is an organization that, as the SPLC has detailed assiduously, has been taken over in the past decade by radical neo-Confederates who favor secession and defend slavery as a benign institution. Leading the takeover is a radical racist named Kirk Lyons, who's been an important legal figure on the far right for some years."
Interesting. Wonder if Glenn Beck will consider that "radical" or praise him for his associations.

I also read a great quote from independent Bruce Bartlett, a conservative economist and former Republican who is sick of the GOP and their misplaced rage:
"No doubt, right wing publishers like Regnery and Crown will be beating down Wilson's door today to sign a book deal that will put him at the top of the New York Times bestseller list along with drivel from the likes of Michelle Malkin, who has probably already started writing her biography of Wilson, titled, "The Man Who Spoke the Truth." By the end of the day a Wilson for President web site will be fully functioning if it isn't already. Watch for the announcement on Glenn Beck’s show this afternoon," - Bruce Bartlett.

Wow. That's awesome. I didn't expect that in such a consistently red state though I'm unfamiliar with the district. Maybe the Sanford dramedy HAS turned a lot of Republicans off. What's also awesome about Wilson's lack of decorum followed by an apology (which turned out to be a faux apology based on his ungraciousness since) is that in addition to the ever-growing fundraising totals for Miller, he's energized the Democratic base. Which is important!
Posted by: Alyson | Sep 10, 2009 6:34:31 PM
"By all means, have Rob Miller take that windfall of his and plow it into attack ads with the theme “Joe Wilson thinks Barack Obama’s being less than honest about health care!” See what that gets you."
Tie it in with Mark Sanford's embarrassing of South Carolina.

-So taxes rates aren't too high.-
I'll ask again. How much additional do you send in?

"Why? Because they offer the moderates nothing but insane right wingers."
Wrong. Again. Thinking like this will lead to big surprises come 2010."
Not really.
Dems will lose 5 to 10 seats.
Or about the historical average for the same party as the President in an off year.
Which will leave them still in firm majorities.

"What do Dems/Left do when they want to spend more money? Propose to raise taxes!"
Shocking that one would seek to pay for one's spending increases.
You would think this would be an issue people could find common ground on.

"Even as Democrats have lost some points in approval, the Republicans have not gained anything.
Why? Because they offer the moderates nothing but insane right wingers."
Wrong. Again. Thinking like this will lead to big surprises come 2010. It's coming, my friend, it's coming. Count on it. Broaden your social circles and you'll see what's going on (tho' if you live in CA - which I think you do - it may be difficult!)
Wilson by 15%-20%...Book it!
