President Obama to Appoint Ron Bloom Manufacturing Czar

September 06, 2009 8:12 PM

In Cincinnati tomorrow, President Obama will announce that he's appointing Ron Bloom his Senior Counselor for Manufacturing Policy, White House sources tell ABC News.

Bloom is currently Senior Advisor to Secretary of the Treasury Tim Geithner as a member of the President’s Task Force on the Automotive Industry, named to that position in February.  He will remain in that position even while he takes on his new task.

A key part of the team that advised the White House on the struggling U.S. auto industry, Bloom and team pushed U.S. automakers General Motors and Chrysler to come up with viable plans for the futurepushed the CEO of GM to resign, and pushed the U.S. government agreed to become a major shareholder in GM, ponying up $50 billion.

Working with the Auto Task Force, President Obama also supported Chrysler entering into a "short, surgical bankruptcy" and entering into a deal with FIAT while agreeing to provide the company with approximately $3.3 billion in debt or in possession financing to support Chrysler though the chapter 11 proceeding

A former vice president of Lazard Freres & Co. LLC, Bloom was a restructuring expert for the U.S. Steelworkers. In his new position, Bloom will work with the National Economic Council, and the Departments of Commerce, Treasury, Energy, and Labor.

In a statement to be released Monday, President Obama will say, “Last week we learned that our manufacturing sector expanded for the first time in 18 months and had the highest monthly output in two years.  It’s a sign that we’re on the right track to economic recovery, but that we still have a long way to go.  That’s why I’ve asked Ron Bloom to help coordinate my Administration’s manufacturing policy.  Distinguished by his extraordinary service on the Auto Task Force and his extensive experience with both business and labor, Ron has the knowledge and experience necessary to lead the way in creating the good-paying manufacturing jobs of the future.  We must do more to harness the power of American ingenuity and productivity so that we can put people back to work and unleash our full economic potential.”

Bloom's statement will read: "A strong manufacturing sector is a cornerstone of American competitiveness and a critical part of President Obama’s economic strategy.  As we meet the challenges of globalization and technological change, it is vital to have a concerted effort across the Administration to support an innovative, vibrant manufacturing sector.”

This guy is another Mao lover- he and Dunn in the last week in the news. He doesn't extol H. Ford, Bill Gates, or any other business icon. The only guy he can talk about is Mao and, on top of that, he says that Capitalism is a lie and that it's all about political power anyway. Another Fabian Socialist. The part that really pisses me off is that now they fell so empowered they come out publicly and state their real agenda and views. How many of them does obama have to appoint before Americans get off their rear ends and stop this.

Is everyone on crazy juice. The "Czar" was first used by the Nixon administration. They have long drawn out official titles. Nixon appointed the"Czar". George W Bush had at least 13 Czars, Karl Rove being one of them. Where was the outrage then? Furthermore, over half of these "Czars" have been CONFIRMED BY THE SENATE,lololol. Come on people. Yelling lil one word retorts. Socialist, Communism. Is LOGIC and REASON officially DEAD in the US. I know it's a lot to ask, but before some of you start spreading, hate, division, and fear (yeah just like the Bush years fear tactics) could you do a lil research, maybe read a book or 2, like a History book maybe!

I've worked over 20 years in manufacturing, now I'm out of a job. I am waiting patiently for my shovel ready job.

I thought American manufacturing was dead.

Bloom was a "restructuring expert" for U.S. Steelworkers, union one would suppose. Since he had a hand in gifting the U.S. automobile industry to the UAW, he is a great choice for "manufacturing czar." If, of course, your objective is to unionize most, if not all, of private manufacturing in the U.S. That will be a great boost to productivity, and thus wages, and thus the competitive position of U.S. industry vs foreign competition. NOT! They can't be this stupid, can they? Or are they really setting out to destroy the U.S. economy so they can usher in the socialist utopia. I'm not a conspiracy guy but even decisions by coin flip would give them a 50% improvement in their success rate.

I did a little research on this man.

It looks to me like another socialist.

Why do we need so many czars? These special advisers receive automatic appointment from the president - they do not go through the approval process/questioning with Congress, unlike other White House appointments. If Van Jones had been forced to go through a Congressional investigation and questioning to receive approval, I doubt he would have made the cut. It would have saved the White House a great deal of embarrassment.

We have a checks-and-balance system in place for a reason. Stop with the czars or put them through the regular Congressional approval process others in the administration must go through.

NO MORE CZARS!!!!!!! FIRE THEM ALL!

And just what are we as a nation going to manufacture after all the small businesses are run out of town by this administrations policies and taxes. Nobody in their right mind will want to endure the penalties they will get by opening or staying in business. Most are already getting out of the country!

Ron Bloom, a former Steelworker union operative charged with running the American auto industry from Washington. Now that car manufacturers are doing so "well," Bloom is about to get a promotion:

The Obama Administration may elevate Ron Bloom, head of the government's auto task force, to a job that would set U.S. manufacturing policy more broadly, people familiar with the matter said.

Bloom's responsibilities at the new position? They're extensive, to say the least:

As the chief policy maker on manufacturing, Bloom would be charged with reviewing U.S. competitiveness in the global economy. His job would likely encompass trade, taxes and other economic issues . . .

Just what American industry needs: another "czar" whose relevant work experience involves running struggling companies into the ground and exploiting their workers. We're sure industry leaders across the country are thrilled at the prospect of taking orders from a UNION CZAR.

The result of this personnel move seems likely to be more forced unionism, less American competitiveness, more job losses, and ultimately more bankruptcies and taxpayer-funded bailouts of corruptly run union pension plans.

It seemed like a good time to google "how to catch wild pigs" and see how close we are to having a gate close.

With each czar appointed and each bill in the house we draw closer.

Does anyone know where H.R.45 stands?

RED ALERT!

It appears that Obama will soon (if not already)have a czar in place for every major discipline of an industrial nation.

These czars appear to be unconstitutional (but no one seems to care, not even congress!

Czar originally meant emperor , a ruler with the same rank as, or with the approval of another emperor or king.

It seems that all is needed for a complete socialistic coup is a crisis large enough for Obama to take complete control!

OH MY GOD--after Obama gave us a new health care program that will cause all seniors to have to march down to the local hospice prior to having an anal probe by space aliens prior to being turned into spam, and after his brainwashing speech to the children where he forces our little babies to pledge allegiance to the kenyun sun gods, now this? We all know that the new czars are worse than commie pinkos--they also eat wheat-grass inflected yogurt every day. EVERY DAY! Beam me up, Scotty,I am sooooo afraid....

communism.

Since we are still presumably in America, can all of the supposedly high-IQ types in the current administration work on finding a better word/title than "czar"? Yes, they can.

Posted by: s | Sep 8, 2009 11:39:09 AM

This just proves what change really is, more czars?

Do these czars replace our representative government?

Does the congress have any control or authority?

Transparency? Yes, it's clear we are heading into the pit of socialism!

Posted by: Ed Taylor | Sep 8, 2009 11:37:03 AM

Another Van Jones appointment? Does he have a criminal background? Has he paid his taxes?

This administration wants to bypass congress by appointing Czars. Congress gets no say in these matters and so we end up with another Chicago crony. This appointing of czars stinks of cronyism and I hope the media gets their head out of their arse and starts doing some investigating on their own.

And you wonder why Obama's poll numbers are going south! ABC please do your job and vet this guy.

Not to knock the Bloom off the rosey picture that Obama would like us to see....but:
Bloom is heavily entrenched with oprganized labor, specifically the UAW. I suppose that, because Obama paid them off (quid pro quo) by siezing the equity in GM and Crysler and gifting his "special friends", a UAW hack shpould be running the industry.

My guess is that GM is dead, only the life support from the Feds is keeping the up the appearance of life. The union has not penalized themselves, taken no action that would indicate that they understand market forces (such as reducing their wages and benefits), and why should they? They fully expect an open credit line back to The Fed for ever.

Organized labor is not about making new jobs for all Americans. They are gate keepers. Theu are there to keep their member's jobs intact and to attempt to deny them to non-union working stiffs. No matter what they say, you can see the truth of this assessment based on what they have done, what they are currently doing and what they intend, under this god forsaken administration and congress.

We should stop calling these people Czars, under the Obama label. We should call them what they truely are; commissars, in the Stalin tradition.

In other words, Mr. Bloom helped screw bondholders, stole $50 billion from taxpayers and gave it to the thugs at the UAW. His time as the head of the Steelworkers Union is why there is not steel industry in the US. His goonish stupidity drove manufacturers overseas, his union boss/Boca Condo/payola is why unions are hated by Americans.

To praise Ron Bloom, and not point out that he is a millionaire thugs is like saying Tony Soprano was in the waste management business.

To effectively overthrow a government you have to have an effective shadow government that will step in. So how powerful and big does Obama's shadow government need to get? Are we losing our representative for of government to czars under the direction of ?
