School Districts in Six States to Refrain from Showing Presidential Address Next Week

September 03, 2009 7:22 PM

Jake Tapper and Karen Travers report:

White House officials seemed to be caught flat-footed by the response to what they say was a simple back to school address by President Obama to students across the nation -- and has turned into a firestorm.

The White House now admits that one of the lessons plans surrounding the speech was written clumsily, subjecting it to misinterpretation, and had to be re-written.

Some parents are talking about keeping their kids from school on tuesday to avoid the president's remarks. The White House says it will release a copy of the text of the president's address on monday so parents and educators can see that the message is entirely about learning, staying in school and taking personal responsibility.

What seems to be drawing the most ire are optional preparatory materials from the Department of Education asking students to "Write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president."

That has now been changed for students to "Write letters to themselves about how they can achieve their short-term and long-term education goals"

But that has not stopped concern and even outrage in some school districts across the country.

In the Douglas County School District in central Colorado, the phones have been ringing off the hook with with upset parents.

"We've probably had about 40 to 50 calls today and probably about 10 or 12 emails today from parents," said Susan Meek of the Douglas County school system.

Some school districts in Texas, Illinois, Virginia, Wisconsin, Missouri and Minnesota are even refusing to show the president's address.

So what did that original statement mean?

Heather Higginbottom, deputy director of the White House Domestic Policy Council, said it was "inartfully worded."

"We changed it. The whole lesson plan speaks to setting goals in increasing their educational achievement," she said.

"The goal of this speech is to encourage students to set goals for themselves," said Higginbottom. "We have a 30 percent drop out rate in this country. We want that reduced."

There is some historical precedent for presidents speaking to students in nationally televised addresses. President George H. W. Bush did so in 1991 and President Ronald Reagan even talked politics with students in 1988.

Nonetheless charges from Republican officials that President Obama is seeking to indoctrinate students -- unsupported by any real evidence -- have been flying.

Florida GOP chairman Jim Greer, who this week called President Obama’s planned speech to school children an attempt to “indoctrinate America’s children to his socialist agenda,” told ABC News' Steve Portnoy that  he’s pleased with the change in the Department of Education document.

Greer said "this administration has been very aggressive and very vocal of their vision of what America should look like in the future and that is not my and my wife’s vision of what America should look like.."

He said "this White House has been very diabolical in creating outlets to communicate with young people."

White House officials call such charges baseless.

"We need to be rising above this," said Higginbottom. "When the president goes out to talk to students about education, this shouldn't be a tool for the right wing."

I was not aware that Jim Greer and his wife could use the chairmanship of the florida gop as a platform to espouse their personal views on national television. Florida needs new republican leadership.

J Danino, did Democrats across the country threaten to keep their children out of school when Bush gave his speech? Did Democrats accuse Bush of attempting to indoctrinate America's children? And when you say "hearings" just how many are you claiming were held?

It is interesting how quickly we forget. When President Bush (the first) gave a speech to Junior High students, the Democrats (with a majority in Congress) denounced the speech. Not only that but they had the GAO investigate and held hearings questioning administration officials. When Democrats do it, it is proper however if a Republican does it we need to oppose it. This is hypocritical, and worse the news media is mum about this.

Steve, why stop with the Pledge of Allegiance? Put up a few more hoops for him to jump through next time. Perhaps lead the kids in singing The Star Spangled Banner – all four verses of it! Then, follow up with America the Beautiful. For the finale, Obama could stand on his head and whistle Yankee Doodle Dandy. Would that prove to you he’s a real, bona fide POTUS?

The lesson plans were probably trying to satisfy the schools, because since
NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND (alias, ALL kids LEFT BEHIND WITH NO-FUNDED POLICY) every little thing has to have a curriculum standard. For instnce, children can't go see the symphony on a field trip without elaborate "curriculum standards" written in the lesson plan. The speech was not re-written, the original version is posted online. The rude screaming minority seems to be sorry losers. Obama did win the election, HE IS OUR PRESIDENT!! The speech encouraged children to do their best, set goals... if that's socialism.....go figure.
Our country is in real trouble when ignorant, prejudiced, religious zealots are given so much press and news attention. Yes they have a right to their opinion, but they do not have a right to control schools. The fanatical Republicans claim to love their country more than the liberals, yet they hate the government??? go figure

Much of this problem could have been solved by saying that the President would begin his speech by leading children in the Pledge of Allegiance. A prayer would have been nice as well, but I guess those days are gone.

Among other things, it might show that our President doesn't hate the country he alledgedly leads.

I cannot believe the ediots in this country not letting their children watch this speech. It's not hard to see why this country is so screwed up when kids can't hear the president on just good common sense. Maybe its because so many have none.

I hate politics! I think Polititians are a bunch of liars. I think We The People should take control of our country. It's not even about the people anymore and that is a crying shame. I did keep my child home today.

Haven’t you heard, Arrow? The party’s over. The goofy GOP chairman from Florida has thrown in the towel and admitted that the speech is fine and dandy. Send the kiddies off to school; the Obamamonster isn’t going to gobble up your offspring.

All,

Keep your kids home. Do not let this administration ruin the minds of free thinking children. We are not a Socialist country and the speech had to be re-written because it stated just that. I was born a Free American and have served 30 years in the Military. I will this countries right to free religon, FREE SPEECH, and Right to Bear Arms. GOD BLESS THE CHRISTIAN Country of our. KEEP YOUR Children Home during the brain washing speech that had to be re-written. Enough of the LIES. ENOUGH!!

For anyone who is interested, I think there is something parents of all parties can learn from all this hoopla. Posted here:

Specifically, I think we should remember who has the MOST influence over our kids. (Hint: it's not the President.)

With all that is going on in this world I cannot beleive there is controversy over our President speaking to children. I am a senior citizen and this world just gets more ridiculous. These protestors banned the President speech in Il without even knowing what the content is. And I am sick of this communist and socialism stuff they are laying on Obama....read the newspaper instead of blindly listening to your preacher. Bush bailed out the banks and Bush took over GM...yeah this was all done before Obama. Children need to be taught respect for adults and their President. How about after the speech at dinner you can discuss, you can find the speech content online. I am really sick and tired of these Republican religious nuts effecting my rights. If I wrote this when Bush was in office I would probably be arrested. I for one am hoping my president succeeds and will do whatever I can and certainly give him some time to correct all the wrongs from the past 8 years..no small task.

Right wing-nuts don't want their children to go to school and/or be educated. So what else is new?

Posted by: Common Sense | Sep 7, 2009 11:26:59 AM

Here is a thought.... Air it on primetime so the parents can sit and watch it with their children. So the parents can ask them questions and encourage them. Shouldn't we a parents be doing this, what a perfect opurtunity to visit and dicuss with your child. Don't go into the schools and try this. Not a good

It's just plain prejudice against the President. He hasn't even given his Address yet and ppl are complaining. Give him a chance.

“Americans do not trust Obama to speak to our children.”

Not all Americans. Not even the majority of Americans. Obama’s unfavorable rating is 33% - and of those 33%, even fewer believe that the White House is home to a child-eating monster.

“Obama has proven himself to be a lying, racist, communist who works tirelessly to divide and destroy America.”

It’s the right wing politicians and commentators who are out to frighten, divide, and destroy America with outrageous lies:
•Obama was born in Kenya
•Obama wants to mandate circumcision
•Children will be indoctrinated and grandchildren may be aborted
•Forced abortions plus sterilants in drinking water to control population
•Mandatory euthanasia counseling sessions
•A VA manual encouraging vets to commit suicide
•Death Panels

The explanation is obvious: Americans do not trust Obama to speak to our children.

Obama has proven himself to be a lying, racist, communist who works tirelessly to divide and destroy America.

He is the worst president that we have hired in my lfetime.

We all laugh at Obama when he preaches and apologizes to his muslim and communist buds. Such an incompetent fool!

But LEAVE OUR KIDS ALONE!

ritzau wrote: “The problem that I have is with the lesson plan. That is not his job. It is the job of the Education Dept. If a school wanted to do a lesson plan after the president spoke, then that should be up to the school. Not the president.”

According to the DOE website, the president didn’t create the lesson plan:
“We also encourage educators to use this moment to help students get focused and inspired to begin the new academic year. The Department of Education offers educators a menu of classroom activities—created by its teachers-in-residence, the Teaching Ambassador Fellows—to help engage students in the address and stimulate classroom discussions about the importance of education.”

Also, from the DOE FAQ:
“Q: Is it mandatory?
A: No. The Department is inviting schools to show the address. The choice is entirely up to schools and their communities.”
