Fourth Grader Asks Obama, "Why Do People Hate You"

October 15, 2009 4:49 PM

Abc_jaffe_090518_mn ABC News' Matthew Jaffe reports: President Obama, like any other President, has his fair share of critics. Even fourth-graders have noticed.

"Why do people hate you?", a fourth-grade boy asked Obama at a town hall event in New Orleans today. "They're supposed to love you. And God is love."

"That's what I'm talking about," replied the President.

"First of all, I did get elected president, so not everybody hates me," Obama noted, before adding, "What is true is if you were watching TV lately, it seems like everybody's just getting mad all the time. And I -- you know, I think that you've got to take it with a grain of salt. Some of it is just what's called politics where, you know, once one party wins, then the other party kind of gets -- feels like it needs to poke you a little bit to keep you on your toes."

"And so you shouldn't take it too seriously," Obama told the boy. "And then, sometimes, as I said before, people just -- I think they're worried about their own lives. A lot of people are losing their jobs right now. A lot of people are losing their health care or they've lost their homes to foreclosure, and they're feeling frustrated. And when you're president of the United States, you know, you've got to deal with all of that."
"You get some of the credit when things go good. And when things are going tough, then, you know, you're going to get some of the blame, and that's part of the job," he continued. "But, you know, I'm a pretty tough guy."
"You've just got to keep on going, even when folks are criticizing you, because -- as long as you know that you're doing it for other people, all right?" Obama concluded.
The boy's question was the last one the President fielded at his event at the University of New Orleans, his first trip to the city since being elected to the Oval Office.

That was actually a good answer, but the real answer is the title "President" seems to mean, "The person to blame when the going gets tough." The truth is it took a whole lot of people to mess things up and no one person is to blame, so in turn it is going to take a whole lot of people over a whole lot of time to get us back on course again. It's going to take more than one person, and more than eight years to get it right.

I'm actually really surprised that Obama could fund the time to answer a question from a fourth grade boy. I'm not saying that I think adults are more important than kids, I just thofht that with buisness and all, a president would be too busy.

Limbaugh & Beck don't hate Obama??

Right!! And a bear doesn't crap in the woods.

The kid has clearly tapped into the national attitude of late.

Obama has done nothing for America but perpetuate the notion that all politicians are corrupt and/or generally don't fix anything. And there's a lot that needs fixing now. Not in 2012, or 2019 or 2032 when most of these half-ass bills and whatevers are impotently passed on to one generation to another to be forgotten or ignored.

Change needs to come NOW because hope is already lost.

So what has Obama been up to these days to start mending and repairing, to get this country back in shape?

Nothing.

Thanks, kid.

People may hate Obama because he has
done nothing so far that has required
wisdom. He has persisted to anger people
with smoke and mirrors. Like Hillary
Clinton said in 2008, he gave one good
speech in 2004,his only qualification
for the presidency of the United States.

"....his first trip to the city since being elected to the Oval Office."
Interesting way to end this piece - with a completely irrelevant piece of information. I wonder if there was some point Jaffe was trying to make?

Wow. Wow that even a child can feel the negative, distructive energy being spewed in this country and wow to those who are so cynical they would suggest his question was "staged". To those who think that I can only reason that their shame forces them to seek yet another cover for their hate and ignorance and to that child I thank him for his question. Americans should be ashamed of their behavior, yes, we have freedom of speech but with resonsibility and with accountability, there is little if any evidence of that since President Obama was sworn into office. This 9 year old child asked a question that most adults who are honest with themselves know the answer to - he is hated because of who he is, first and not policies. President Obama is truly a kind and gracious man, as his response to this ernest child reflected. Ignorance breeds fear and fear combined with ignorance breeds prejudice - if this isn't a wake up call to the haters out there I don't know what it would take.

Even children know something isn't right in DC.

What's most disheartening about reading most of these comments is that not many adults seem to be concerned that a fourth grader asked about hate. I'm sure these are the same people who don't understand why our country is one of the most violent countries in the world. Our media and a great majority of our parents spew hateful and vicious thoughts not just about the President but fellow Americans as well.... there is nothing wrong with respectfully disagreeing with another person.... too bad the children of our nation can see we as adults have no idea how to do that

As Americans we should be troubled that a nine year old child of God has heard so many hateful things said about the President that he felt compelled to ask the question.

President handled the question with
class.

"President Obama knows."

Yes, he knows what it's like to get a free pass into a Prep. school and college because of social and political pull from friends and relatives.
By the way, could we now see his Prep. school, Columbia and Harvard records? Why the secrecy?

I need to go back and watch that video again was that a portable telepromter under Obamas jacket or just a hand written note.

Why didn't you run propaganda trash like this when Bush was president?

You could have filled columns and columns with this kind of "news".

I'm tired of Obama's face on TV every day several times a day trying to con his way into our hearts. He's a "redistributive justice" socialist and America does not want this!! Stop using kids, and emotions and instead follow the constitution Mr. President! We'll respect you if you do.

Chavez uses the same tactics (hour after hour on TV and his "Alo Presidente" weekly brainwashing is sickening!) I can smell the putrid sulfur although Chavez claimed not to!

Hate is a strong word. Even Rush and Glenn don't hate Obama they just detest his devious socialistic policies.

" UH ah uhhh...but that's ok cuz when I get blamed I just turn around and BLAME BUSH....i mean that's what we do, uh..uh. ahh uh Yeah, BLAME BUSH"

Posted by: the slob | Oct 16, 2009 6:33:31 PM

But, does Obama hate Fox News?

Was Anita Dunn's favorite political philosopher Mao Zedong?

Is Dunn's job to take down Fox News for Obama?

Do I still live in America, or do we already have change?

"If my 4th grader hadn't asked me the same question, I would have thought this was a set up."

If 'adults' like Limbaugh and Beck think kids don't notice the hate in their high-paid, mercenary attacks, they're (again) sadly wrong.

'Adults' like Limbaugh and Beck are creating hate in America and being well paid to do it. Very sad . . .

If my 4th grader hadn't asked me the same question, I would have thought this was a set up.

Posted by: Donna | Oct 16, 2009 3:42:07 PM

I watched it and it wasn't a question, certainly NOT a "tough" question or Obama could not have answered it with "that's what I'm talking about!"
The boy was making a statement, and that statement was "God is love". Basically the boy is saying that there is a lot of anger when God would not approve. His Bibles says, "God is Love" so come on people get happy! Typical 4rth grade logic, not exactly a tough question. He's clearly pulling for Obama, not against him. I don't assume the question was planted but it sure wouldn't surprise me if it was.
