Obama on Health Care Reform: 'Let’s Go Finish the Job'

October 10, 2009 6:01 AM

From Jordyn Phelps and Sunlen Miller:

“Let’s go finish the job,” President Obama said in his weekly address focused on health care reform.

Saying that debate in Congress is approaching its final days, the president drew attention to Republican leaders who have come out in support reform -- California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, and the secretary of Health and Human Services under former President George W. Bush, Tommy Thompson.

“These distinguished leaders understand that health insurance reform isn’t a Democratic issue or a Republican issue, but an American issue that demands a solution,” the president said.

The Senate Finance committee is set to conclude its debate on the legislation next week. The Finance Committee’s legislation will then have to be merged with the other versions of the bill that have been produced by other Congressional committees.

The president said there’s no doubt that the reform package has been strengthened by all the debate over “the better part of a year.”

Again, he said that he believes the legislation includes bipartisan ideas.

“The approach that is emerging includes the best ideas from Republicans and Democrats, and people across the political spectrum,” Obama said.

Citing a report by the Congressional Budget Office, Obama said the Finance Committee’s bill will not add to the national deficit and will bring about greater health care security to insured and uninsured Americans alike by slowing the growth in health care costs and putting new insurance protections in place.

He also addressed those in Washington who, the president said, are still working to score political points by maintaining the status quo even late in the debate.

“A status quo of rising health care costs that are crushing our families, our businesses and our government,” the president said. “A status quo of diminishing coverage that is denying millions of hardworking Americans the insurance they need. A status quo that gives big insurance companies the power to make arbitrary decisions about your health care.”

The president added that this sort of status quo is unacceptable.

“That is a status quo I reject," he said. "And that is a status quo the American people reject.”

The president concluded his address by saying that reform is in the near future and, in essence, he called on Congress to reach the finish line.

“That future is within our grasp,” the president said. “So, let’s go finish the job.”

mjishernameo, when you made the comment 'The U.S. economy is almost dead.....now lets go finish the job !' were you ignoring the fact that insurance premiums have been and will continue to rise at a much faster rate than our paychecks. In the last 5 years my family's insurance has doubled. This is unsustainable for my family and millions like us. These insanely high premiums, for less coverage, does have the ability to cripple our economy. It is just like the high oil and gas prices a year ago. Suddenly middle and low income people saw all their spare money after essentials going toward their gas and oil bills. With none left for buying much else, the economy started its nosedive.
A public option is the only way to give these greedy companies true competition that will keep our premiums down. This, in turn, will help the economy by making sure our next raise won't all go to a health insurance company.
This is about what is best for our country, not what is best for the profits of the health insurance industry.

If that's what he said he may have been quoting the 1796 Treaty of Tripoli put together and enacted by George Washington, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson. Article 11 begins: "As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion..."

Single payer will be part of the health care bill. Watch and see.

jr-ny...NOT a Obama supporter by any means; based upon his politics, however, President Bush invited gay groups to also participate in the WH Egg hunt and why not, egg hunts are about the KIDS not the adults.............

Hey jhw539, help me out here. I need a better understanding of who is going to pay. The smoke and mirrors are taking up too much time to wade through.
1. Hospitals secured a 10-year exemption from cost-cutting recommendations that would be made by an independent federal commission charged with controlling spending in the government's Medicare program.
2. Coal miners, firefighters and others in jobs deemed high-risk are more likely than others with high-cost insurance policies to avoid a new tax.
3. A $750 million annual tax on clinical labs was dropped after trade groups, including the American Clinical Laboratory Association, objected.
4. Obama has already made a quiet deal with the pharmaceutical companies.
5. Pelosi is going to slip in a 'value added tax' on everything on top of current taxes.
6. Obama already plans to take $500B away from Medicare.
7. Congress has killed COLA raises for federal folks.
Who is left to pay the health reform bills over the next decade????? Guess.

America has a very unique Christian-Muslim President, Obama.

On the National Prayer Day, Obama had skipped to celebrate National Prayer Day, but attended and addressed on the spot of Gay Rights Advocate.

On the Easter Sunday which Jesus Christ resurrect in the White House in 2009, Obama had invited gay and lesbian group on Easter hunter games.
During the White House’s celebration of the Muslim holiday of Ramadan this evening, President Obama highlighted the contributions of Muslim Americans, talking about how much the Muslim community has enriched American culture “in ways both large and small.”

Three days later the lavish Inauguration, Obama signed on "Mexico Policy" which aids "ABORTION" that 43,000,000 of American babies have been killed since Roe v Wade in 1973 to Foreign Countries.

On the speech in Turkey, Obama said that American was not considered "Christian Nation"…….
Most of Christian and God have counted on what Obama has done so far.

"898 billion dollar cost won't add to the already beyond belief national debt.
Another lie from a professional liar."

I really hope the Right is just *playing* dumb... The Finance Committee bill clearly calls out the new sources of funding (the tax on 'Cadillac' healthplans pushed by Republicans targeting unions, elimination of the private insurance middle man on a Medicare option, etc.). More money would be brought in than paid out, hence the CBO analysis predicting it to actually reduce the deficit in the next ten years with additional savings predicted beyond that.

There is NOT going to be a significant change in cost. The medical folks, and medical supply producing folks will still earn money.

The reform consists of having the government force your neighbor to pay your medical bills, while you pay his. It's called taxes. Well, in some case the Dems are trying NOT to call it taxes.

"Even Rasmussen with their Republican house effect has Obama at about 50% right now, his best rating for months actually."

Yes, and that's his job approval rating. His favorability ratings tend to run higher than his job approval ratings.

"To those that are in high praise of this administration, haven't you wondered why no TORT reform?"
bailedout | Oct 10, 2009 12:45:42 PM

You do realize that "this administration" and the Congress critters you cited ARE NOT THE SAME ENTITY, right? Anyhow, tort reform is a state power. MANY STATES HAVE INCORPORATED STRICT TORT REFORM WITH LITTLE BENEFIT. If you want tort reform, move to Texas where it is literally written into their state constitution. And try to tell us why Texa's health care costs are on par with the states that do not have tort reform...

I'd be fine with tort reform being in there, but for the same reason as I was fine with dropping the 0.0002% of the stimulus bill allocated for refurbishing the National Mall's infrastructure - if Republicans are going to throw a tantrum over a trivial and irrelevant item, may as well give it to them. (Not that they'll then stop whining and get to work, but they're petty politicking will be shown for what it is.)

Posted by: jhw539 | Oct 10, 2009 12:53:12 PM

My favorite item has been that the Democrats voted to keep the final bill off the internet until after it is voted on. You got to love that transparency..

"And that same Public Opinion that has DROPPED 26% to only a 48% favorability for Obama?
Posted by: liberals drool | Oct 10, 2009 12:12:25 PM

Which Public Opinion poll has Obama with only a 48% favorability rating????
Posted by: Numeros | Oct 10, 2009 12:41:23 PM"

Arguing polls is a bit pointless, which makes it even more amusing that the Right feels the need to lie about them. Even Rasmussen with their Republican house effect has Obama at about 50% right now, his best rating for months actually.

I find the line about "no other president has fallen so fast!!!" particularily amusing, seeing as how Obama has now stabilized above the levels seen by such failed Presidents as Reagan and Clinton at this point in their terms...

"Most Americans aren't ready for the public option as of yet"

The polls say most Americans want it.

"The Democrats are just paying lip service to "bi-partisan".... the 100% Democratic controlled committees are voting down ALL substantial Republican ideas......."..... Actually they'll incorporate a boatload of republican items and then every republican will vote "nay" knowing it will pass. Then they'll say they were ignored and had nothing to do with it. They put a wad in the stimulus bill as well, and then pulled this. So they could act like it was only dems spending that money. Check it out. This is a game all of congress plays. In fact this is how McCain's really done pork. Gets it put in a bill that he knows will pass with dems, and then votes nay. Trust nothing any of them say.

" the 100% Democratic controlled committees are voting down ALL substantial Republican ideas......."
Vet1973 | Oct 10, 2009 12:34:27 PM

Citation please. You know, a real fact. Like the FACT that the finance committee dropped the public option to appease Republicans and protect insurance companies. Or the FACT that the tax on 'Cadillac plans' in the Finance Committee is a Republican idea (aimed at union's who have fought and compromised for great health care).

Any reality behind your charge?

Posted by: jhw539 | Oct 10, 2009 12:43:05 PM

Vet1973: 21st century digital age, the republicans can easily post their version of what they want in a bill instead of using lame lip service...
