ABC News’ Yunji de Nies reports:
Michelle Obama now holds a new title – Pesident. Not of course of the country, but the new honorary National President of Girls Scouts. Mrs. Obama accepted the post, following in the tradition of every first lady since Edith Wilson in 1917.
“It is my great pleasure to serve as Honorary National President of Girl Scouts,” Mrs. Obama said in a written statement, “With their innovative new programming, ground-breaking research, and emphasis on service and leadership, Girl Scouts is preparing the women of tomorrow to be a positive force for change – in their own lives, their communities, and across the globe.”
Girls Scouts spokeswoman Michelle Tompkins told ABC News the First Lady’s commitment to healthy living and healthy eating, along with her stated interest in promoting women and girls, makes her ideal for the job.
“Since her goals are similar to ours, we can’t think of a better person to take this role,” Tompkins said, “It’s incredibly important. Girls love Mrs. Obama. She’s an accomplished women. We want our girls to see what they can aspire to be.”
The Girl Scouts have plenty of notable political alums – including Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and First Lady Laura Bush. Clinton’s daughter Chelsea was also a Girl Scout, though First Tweens Malia and Sasha are not. The First Lady’s office said they were unsure whether Mrs. Obama had participated in the organization as a young girl.
Several Girl Scouts of America executives, along with a handful of local girl scouts went to the White House last week, to participate a night of star gazing, put on by the Administration and NASA. The group was taken into the Oval Office for a photograph with the First Lady, and the President surprised the group and joined the photo.
Tompkins say Mrs. Obama will tape a message for the organization more than three million members. Her involvement after that is up to her, though they are hopeful she will be a very active honorary president.
**There is a nice group photo from the Oval Office that we are posting to the Punch blog – it’s too big to send out but if anyone needs it, let me know.
