Secretary Clinton to Pakistan: "I Find it Hard to Believe that Nobody in Your Government Knows Where (Al Qaeda) Really Are and Couldn't Get Them if They Really Wanted To"

October 29, 2009 1:58 PM

In Lahore, Pakistan, today Secretary of State Hillary Clinton delivered a blunt message to six prominent Pakistani newspaper editors.

Asked by Asha'ar Rehman, an editor of Dawn, why the US war on terror is so localized to Pakistan, Clinton did not mince words.

"Al-Qaeda has had safe haven in Pakistan since 2002,” she said. “I find it hard to believe that nobody in your government knows where they are and couldn't get them if they really wanted to."

Clinton allowed, “maybe that's the case; maybe they're not gettable. I don't know.''

She said that the US-Pakistan relationship “is a two-way street. If we are going to have a mature partnership where we work together," then "there are issues that not just the United States but others have with your government and with your military security establishment.''

The former First Lady and senator from New York said, “I don't believe in dancing around difficult issues because I don't think that benefits anybody….I ask in the pursuit of mutual respect that you take seriously our concerns.''

Whats happening in pakistan is so sad. No one is really bothered about the citizens. Some rough warnings and actions is a must.

Someone should have said something, now I just hope Obama will back her up.

Hillary will probably be called in on the carpet to explain to Obama why she did not apologize to Pakistan like he so often does when he travels overseas.

Rock on, Hillary.

You are tough to like but you do not offend anyone's sensibilities (a la Pelosi, Reid & Company)and - frankly, - there is no question about your competence and intelligence. Now you are showing signs that you are about to rock their world on a flat out common sense basis. We are so done with this obvious snubbing of our concerns in Pakistan because "it is way too complicated, yada, yada, yada."

These guys are harboring criminals against the United States and humanity. Let's get on with the getting on.

I think Hillary makes a good point. The terrible retribution that these terrorists groups pay out on the family of informers and police and the military who capture their members keeps much of the terrorist groups safe. It is the same thing in Mexico with the drug cartels. The cruel and vindictive actions of these thugs gives them safe haven all too often, out of fear for self and family.
Hillary is right to air the ugly truth that the government in Pakistan isn't fighting the terrorists wholeheartedly. They need to look at rounding up the terrorists as a painful necessity if that region will ever have sustained peace. They also need to help the poor immediately and sustainably to dry up the groups that the terrorists recruit most of their members from: the poor and hopeless and uneducated.

This is exactly the type of unilateralist, American exceptionalist bullying that the Liberals accused Bush of for 8 years!

really? interviews with newspapers? that's your version of 'bullying'?
invading a country like Iraq is a better example of unilateralist, bullying... maybe even the vaunted Bush Doctrine, to attack anyone that even smelled bad.

"US President Obama has been silent about the situation for far too long and European countries like Germany and France are correct to demand better American leadership on the issue of Afghanistan."

US President Obama sent an additional 17,000 troops into Afghanistan within a few short months of his inauguration and negotiated an agreement with Pakistan that American funding be contingent upon them fighting radical militant islamist.

You keep forgetting it was actually Bush and Cheney who kept silent on Afghanistan and let it slide for 7 years - not Obama.

Should we stay in Afghanistan? Can we 'win' in Afghanistan - not my field of expertise.

Good one, Tierra--but I assume you know that double-A is known precisely as the bush leagues.

Meanwhile, Der Spiegel gets the picture and describes it succinctly:

"Afghanistan and Pakistan are being shaken by attacks, and the Taliban is dictating the course of the war. US President Obama has been silent about the situation for far too long and European countries like Germany and France are correct to demand better American leadership on the issue of Afghanistan."

The Double-A ballplayer of international diplomacy:

"The controversy could overshadow Clinton’s first visit to the country as Secretary of State, especially as her remarks will be seen questioning the sincerity of the influential military, Pakistani officials said."

Posted by: Fascist Hyena | Oct 29, 2009 9:39:06 PM

This is such a bizarre thing for a Sec. of State to say to a country we are hoping will continue to support us. This is something you say in private to the appropriate leader in Pakistan, not something you muse about and then try and backtrack from in a public event. What happened to "smart power" and resetting our relations with the world? Oh wait, they have reset the relations with the world, criticize our allies and praise our enemies. Bizarre.

I thought Hillary might begin to challenge these idiots in the white house, hope she runs against them in 2012.

Independent Conservative here ... not an Obama mind-numb-follower at all. But kudos to Hillary ... keep the pressure on so we can declare victory & bring home the boys. Bury the fruit-cakes that attacked us & their brain-washed followers & bring the boys home in victory.

Thank God for Hillary. At least she has the know-how and guts to stand up and say it like it is. If I were a Democrat, she would have gotten my vote hands down. I wonder if girly-man Obama is taking notes on how this works...you go there, you tell them how it's going to work, and if they don't accept it, TOO BAD. No wavering, no apologizing, no appeasing. Give 'em hell, Hillary.

I believe she's blurring that acceptable line in the sand as well as teetering on the highwire of diplomacy --- while I agree with her assertion, I question its efficacy in diplo-speak. What's scarey is it borders on the arrogant tone of the previous admin.

i never thought i'd see the day when i wished a clinton were in the white house again, but i do. sigh.
