The Presidential Planner

October 22, 2009 7:00 AM

ABC News' Sunlen Miller reports:

President Obama will meet with Lt. Gen. Karl Eikenberry, U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan, via videoconference in the Situation Room this morning.

The president has not had a full meeting with his national security team this week. White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said there are smaller meetings of National Security Council principles and there will be a full meeting early next week.

On Tuesday, President Obama also spoke with Eikenberry and thanked him for his “exceptional work” after Afghan President Hamid Karzai agreed to a run-off election.

Later, the president will have a private meeting with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi in the Private Dining Room.

In the afternoon, the president will sign into law the Veterans Health Care Budget Reform and Transparency Act which “guarantees a timely and predictable flow of funding for Department of Veterans Affairs medical care,” the White House said.

An administration official said it would make the money for Veterans Affairs dependable by taking that portion of money out of the “beltway budget battle”  and allow the agency actually to plan for medical accounts.

As a senator, Obama co-sponsored the legislation with Sen. Daniel Akaka, D-Hawaii.

“We are very excited because it is a promise kept,” an administration official said.

The president will be joined by Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki, members of Congress, and leaders from various Veterans Service Organizations in the East Room ceremony.

On Tuesday, first lady Michelle Obama paid a visit to the Department of Veterans Affairs and thanked employees for their service. She said the VA act her husband will sign will provide better care to veterans.

“This legislation guarantees a timely and predictable flow of funding for VA medical care,” the first lady said, according to ABC News’ Karen Travers, “because that's what's required to guarantee better care to the men and women who serve this country.”

Later today, the president will meet separately with Secretary of the Treasury Tim Geithner and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in the Oval Office as part of his weekly meetings with each.

Nonsense. Obama ran his campaign with the specific position of increasing the effort in Afghanistan.

"He's had a consistent seven-day drop in the polls. When was it that the WH started their war with Fox?"

Rasmussen

7 days ago 48% approval. Today 47% approval

Gallup

7 days ago 52% approval. Today 50%.

Note the Gallup poll showed a brief Nobel bounce.

The lesson as always? Right wingers lie.

"So how's that attack on free speech/Fox News working out for Obama?"

Yet again right wingers think free speech is for them only and that no one should be allowed to respond to their garbage.

Of course the last decade has seen them portraying all dissent as unpatriotic even treasonous.

But I guess they only act that way while in power.

Note to America, never let the right wing in power again.

So how's that attack on free speech/Fox News working out for Obama?

How's the waffling and foot dragging on Afghanistan working out?

He's had a consistent seven-day drop in the polls. When was it that the WH started their war with Fox?

=== Or at least that's how it is in Right wing fantasy land, right?===

You mean I missed another meeting he held with McChrystal?

Obama can't find the time to make a decision about Afghanistan.
His plate is way too full.

He's got salsa dancing, a war with Fox, TV appearances, basketball photo-ops, campaigning, and Obamacare that takes a top priority.

Obama probably served Maddow and Olbermann milk and cookies for being good little cheerleaders.

Only Obama/WH could stand being around that obnoxious Olbermann for 2.5 hours.
They are all alike.

Who is Obama trying to fool?

He isn't sending troops because he doesn't want to tick off his base.

It's not about our troops and the fact that they are in limbo everyday.
It is about him always.

Those journalists who will not even air this bit of drama between the White House and Fox News are fools to think that it won't happen to them if they deign to disagree with their chosen administration. When one can be the target of invective and bullying then any news organization can....and will. Shame is the only descriptive term printable.

25 minute meeting with your commander in Afghanistan. 2-1/2 hour meeting with left leaning "journalists". Tapper wasn't invited. Priorities.

Right, because Obama hasn't spoken to a single other person about Afghanistan (the Pentagon chain of command, Gates, even Kerry) or reviewed any documentation (hundreds of pages of reports and regular briefs). Or at least that's how it is in Right wing fantasy land, right?

"Wait, what? This is the legislative session that got stuck on Obama Agenda Item #1 in July and still hasn’t finished chewing on its trillion-dollar cost."

So averting a second Great Depression is nothing I guess? Fine - then I expect to hear no more whining about the stimulus, or as you refer to it "nothing". We'll also ignore stuff like Lilly Ledbetter; the March omnibus bill (as that is nothing too, I also expect no more whining about the earmarks in it); cash for clunkers and extension; Kerry-Lugar; the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act; Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility, and Disclosure Act; Children's Health Insurance Reauthorization Act; Weapons Systems Acquisition Reform Act; Fraud Enforcement and Recovery Act;...

Well, that's a partial list of legislation passed by this Congress and signed by Obama. This is all documented and very public information. I encourage anyone who cares about reality to look around a bit.

Here are a couple of interesting excerpts from that new USA Today/Gallup poll on the issue of health care reform.

“The percentage of Republicans saying they will oppose the final healthcare bill is higher than the percentage of Democrats who will support it, 62% vs. 47%, largely because more Democrats than Republicans are reserving their final judgment until the details of the legislation are worked out.”

What does that say about partisan fair-mindedness? You be the judge.

“Obama and Democrats in Congress command significantly more confidence than Republicans on the issue. More than half of Americans say they trust the president to change the system, compared with 37% expressing the same for congressional Republicans.”

News Flash: Most Americans are un-American.

---Most Americans do not believe President Obama should have won the Nobel Peace Prize, and are divided on whether the award is a good thing, according to a new USA TODAY/Gallup Poll.

Sixty-one (61%!) percent of respondents said Obama DID NOT DESERVE TO WIN the prize announced on Oct. 9, according to the poll; 34% said he did deserve the honor.

When asked if they were personally glad that Obama won the award, 46% said they were and 47% said they were not glad.---

So, while many people thought it nice that he won, most do not believe he earned it. Which makes sense, in that most people like Obama--but do not respect him or take him seriously.

On Tuesday, Obama really said this:
"If we stop now, if we didn’t do anything else for the next three months, we would have had one of the most productive legislative sessions in decades — already."

Wait, what? This is the legislative session that got stuck on Obama Agenda Item #1 in July and still hasn’t finished chewing on its trillion-dollar cost. In fact, with a 70-seat majority in the House and 60 seats in the Senate, Obama and the Democrats couldn’t finish doing the budget on time — which Republicans cannot filibuster under Senate rules. They had to rely on a continuing resolution to keep the federal government operating in October....and they still don’t have a budget passed. If they take any longer, they’ll have to pass another CR.

That’s not a productive legislative session. It’s an embarrassment.
