Today’s Q’s for O’s White House

October 06, 2009 3:47 PM

DeNies ABC News' Yunji de Nies reports:

de Nies: Two quick questions. The first one, back to Afghanistan, does the president think -- yesterday Secretary Gates said this discussion should be candid but it should also be happening privately. Does the president think this is all happening too publically, this military debate?

Gibbs: Again, I’m not going to get into parsing generals or secretaries of defense… I know, I appreciate the repeated opportunity to do so. The president set up a process and we’re going through that.

de Nies: OK.  Today, Cindy Sheehan was back outside the White House.  Yesterday she chained herself to the North Lawn gate and got arrested.  Today she's back, and she said she's actually moving to Washington.  She's going to be out there until her complaints are addressed.  Is the president or anyone from the White House going to meet with any of these protesters?

Gibbs: Not that I am aware of.

Later the discussion turned to the Dalai Lama’s visit to Washington and the fact that the president is not meeting with the Tibetan leader.

CBS’ Mark Knoller:  Is he worried that he might be seen kowtowing to Chinese leaders by not meeting with the Dalai Lama on his forthcoming visit?

GIBBS:  No, again, as I said, it's important -- and the Tibetans -- Tibetan people know that our relationship -- our strong relationship with China helps them.  So I -- I think this was mutually agreed upon, and it's what's going to happen.

de Nies:  How so? How does a strong relationship with China help Tibet?

GIBBS:  Our relationship with China, having a strong relationship and a good dialogue with them, allows us to talk to them about the cares and concerns of the Tibetan people.

de Nies:  Has the president done that?

GIBBS:  I believe we have mentioned human rights in meeting with the Chinese, yes.

Wow, that's weird. For once in my life I agreed with Alyson about something, but my comment got pulled by the moderators. Have no idea why.

But anyway, the subject on which we were in agreement was that it was quite clear that Ayers was just messin' with the blogger to whom he spoke, not making a serious "confession." He was having a little fun, and no conservative blogger that I have seen (yes, I read both conservative and liberal bloggers) took him seriously. Sorry, Nephron, but that "confession" was no confession.

Oh, and Alysonita, it's "yank the CHAIN" not "yank the CHANGE"-- or were you going for a pun?

William Ayers today unprompted admitted to being the author of 'Dreams from my Father'; why would he say that?"

Posted by: Nephron | Oct 6, 2009 10:44:43 PM

Fell for it, huh? I particularly liked the part in the National Journal piece where they say" Ayers was nonplussed. Then an Abbie Hoffmanish, steal-this-book-sort-of-smile lit up his face." I like that he's saying "if you can prove it we can split the royalties.” He's double daring the ghosters (many of whom are also birthers, tenthers and so on) to come up with some tanglible proof! Hard to believe Ayers would yank the change of badge-carrying members of conservative movement that’s been after him for a decade, putting them back on the trail of a fruitless conspiracy theory. LOL!!!

Good discussion on Tibet. Hope every war in the world ends soon.

Question for Baghdad Bob Gibbs:

Why do Democrats KEEP ON funneling taxpayer money to a group which was caught in multiple cities enabling underage prostitution??

---Nearly $1 million in Homeland Security funding typically earmarked for fire departments HAS BEEN AWARDED TO ACORN, despite a clear signal from Congress that it intends to CUT OFF FEDERAL FUNDING to the embattled group.

The grant to ACORN's Louisiana office became public on Oct. 2, less than three weeks AFTER the House and Senate voted to cut off ACORN funding after employees were caught on video advising a fake prostitute and pimp on scams.

It was one of only three such grants issued to the state and made up almost 80 percent of the firefighting money earmarked for Louisiana, prompting one of the U.S. senators from the state to demand that the funds be taken back.

"I request that you rescind this grant based on a history of abuse of federal dollars by ACORN and their clear lack of expertise in this area," said Sen. David Vitter, Louisiana Republican.---

Yes We Can!

Gibby truly is useless, isn't he? What foolish double-speak on the Tibet question. I hope the president himself has a more internally consistent and logical argument for how his dealings with China will ultimately be of benefit to the people of Tibet. I am sure he does.

To be clear, I think it is Gibbs who is clueless on this matter, and unable to answer honestly the most straightforward of questions. I do not think the president is equally clueless in this particular case.

"What is clear is that the Dems don't have the will to fight to win in Afghanistan. They won't call it a loss though. They will redefine success and get out."

The Dems have finally found somebody worth fighting in Afghanistan: Gen. Stanley McChrystal. When do the MoveOn attack ads hit the NY Times (and get the family discount)??

Then, this week Obama gave a speech on al-Qaeda and counter-terrorism, without mentioning the word "Afghanistan" once! This after he came into office complaining how Bush under-resourced the "Necessary War." Now he is not sure if we need to go after the Taliban at all.

Why not ask the obvious question: "William Ayers today unprompted admitted to being the author of 'Dreams from my Father'; why would he say that?"

Posted by: Nephron | Oct 6, 2009 10:44:43 PM

What's the matter!? Was his opponent last year too old!?!? Or too much like Bush?!

Posted by: JV | Oct 6, 2009 8:49:58 PM

First he said he didn't want to be a wartime president. Then he says Afghanistan is a necessity. Who is this fool kidding. Hypocrite!.

Posted by: JV | Oct 6, 2009 8:45:01 PM

"I feel somehow Mr. Obama will lose a war."

What is clear is that the Dems don't have the will to fight to win in Afghanistan. They won't call it a loss though. They will redefine success and get out.

I feel somehow Mr. Obama will lose a war.

He Washington Post has a very clear understanding of what's at stake:

"Defeating the Taliban and fostering an Afghan government and army that can stabilize the country are daunting tasks that will require years of patience. It could be that even a concerted effort, along the lines proposed by Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal, would fail. There should be no mistaking, however, what the stakes of this conflict are. Whether or not al-Qaeda regains its pre-9/11 haven, a Taliban victory would be a catastrophe for the United States and its allies."

Let us hope that the president has the wisdom, the courage and the stomach to do what needs to be done.

The POTUS will have to spin the Dharma Wheel.

If our relationship is so strong that we can talk to China about their human rights problems, then surely it is strong enough that the Dalai Lama can stop over at the WH for a meeting with the President.

Wouldn't letting the Dalai Lama continue to come over, as he has for a decade now, be a good way of letting China know we care about the concerns of the Tibetan people?

Posted by: MayBee | Oct 6, 2009 5:15:43 PM

You have to give Cindy Sheehan credit, she's a bipartisan protestor.. I respect that she is sticking to her guns... well, not guns...per se'

Posted by: DontGet818OnMeNow | Oct 6, 2009 5:01:11 PM

Yes, great follow-up questions on Tibet. But, his answer left something to be desired..."I believe we have mentioned human rights in meeting with the Chinese, yes." And, why would he not be absolutely certain about that? Probably because it hasn't been discussed at all. The current administration is simply too afraid to confront the Chinese with that subject even though it should be an obvious issue for us to bring up.

Obama doesn't want the war in Afhganistan to end.

He loves having a reason to look like a victim and blame Bush.
How many times has he used the "my plate is full" excuse?

How many times has Gibbs used the same excuse?

It's no wonder Obama said leaving is not an option--he has an ongoing excuse that he will use the next three years.

Good job on the Tibet questions, Yunji.
