Obama Political Arm Says GOP House Members Caved to Insurance Lobby Pressure
November 08, 2009 5:18 PM
President Obama's message to supporters on the "Organizing for America" email list may have been positive (if financially solicitous), but the director of his political arm was under no such apparent guidance.
Today OFA supporters in congressional districts represented by Republican Members of Congress who voted "No" last night received an email from OFA director Mitch Stewart lauding the "220 courageous representatives voted in favor of reform, moving it forward."
"Unfortunately, your representative," Stewart says in the email, which names the Member of Congress, "caved to intense pressure from insurance industry lobbyists and voted against health reform."
A Democratic official says the email is not being sent to constituents of the 39 Democratic Members of Congress who voted against the measure Saturday night.
"It's our belief that all Democrats want reform and we believe some if not many more Democrats will support a final bill," said DNC spokesman Brad Woodhouse. "We believe that Republican opposition is political - intended to curry favor with the insurance industry and to break the President politically."
Stewart in his email says that "After this major decision," Republican Members of Congress will "be watching their district very closely to see how constituents react. Before health reform can become law, it must pass one more time through the House of Representatives, which means" the congressman in question "will have one more opportunity to reverse course and support reform. So we must publicly show that the voters in your district support reform and are counting on" the congressman "to deliver."
The OFA email then asks supporters to "write a letter to the editor of a local newspaper telling" the congressman "to stop standing in the way of reform."
The OFA website connects supporters to local newspapers, providing them with "helpful information about the House bill and health reform," though it asks for the "best content" to come from their own "personal story about why health reform matters to you, your family, and your community. You can write about how important it is that our representatives stand with their constituents and not the special interests. What matters the most is that you write from the heart and speak out as a concerned citizen at this crucial time."

It is the platform of the modern Democratic Party to lift up the impoverished, salute the failure, reward the takers, applaud the indecisive and elevate the self-centered to assure us more of these in the future. In giving away the treasure of the nation, they increase the line for hand-outs beyond all ability to satisfy. The downward slope increases its steepness and slip each moment. The result is to assign a willing dictator the control and management of what remains. Is this the future of America, once the greatest nation in the world for individual freedom and prosperity? The 19th century Democrat was the libertarian following Jefferson, cited in THE CHANGING FACE OF DEMOCRATS on Amazon and claysamerica.com. The 20th century Democrat follows Rousseau and Marx and condemns individual freedom, the free market and American exceptionalism to the ash heap of history, all at the hands of Obama and his cadre of communists. Khrushchev was right, that we will impose communism on ourselves, and we are doing it right now.

"Also, dream-- it depends on the national insurance exchange."
I took these figures from the letter the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office sent to Rep. Charles Rangel, the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, on Nov. 2, 2009.
(I cannot post a link here or I would do that to help you find the letter, but I think you can locate it if you do a search.)

And the choice that's not there: Liberty

Real liberty comes through responsibility and compassion not by running and avoiding and throwing other people under the bus. Without equality, there is no liberty.
I'll get to your other question later. Just got home and have to work tonite-- but you're claim isn't accurate.
Also, dream-- it depends on the national insurance exchange. I have to look something up, but I believe what the situation you describe in your post isn't completely accurate either. It's definitely an issue that should be addressed, and could very easily be addressed.

Soooooo. What does happen if you don't buy the insurance or pay the tax?

Wow, lots of misinformation in these comments.
The health insurance industry spent over $300 million dollars in the last three months fighting health care reform. Common sense tells us that means they see health care reform as bad for their over-spending ways and good for us. Don't believe those comments here that say the insurance companies wanted health care reform. They have been fighting it tooth and nail.
This bill will be a good thing for the American people, small business and our economy.

Alyson from Chitown:
I believe there is no allowance in the legislation for WHERE one lives in the country, so a person earning, say, $42,000 and living in the very expensive Boston to Washington D.C. corridor would have to buy the same $7,300 insurance policy as someone living in the far cheaper Midwest. If the person who earns $42,000 and lives in New York City (for instance) cannot afford to pay the $7,3000 insurance premium, he will be fined $5,000 -- which he also cannot afford. Rent costs more in the NYC area, food coats more, everything costs more to live there.
This bill is a giant gift to the insurance companies, and their executives are already doing fist bumps of joy at its passage in the House. They donated to Obama's campaign as they donated to the campaigns of all the major players in Congress -- and it is paying off for them.

not a one of them have answered why it is that you have to criminalize people to coax them into a plan that’s so fabulous...
Posted by: People's Komissariat of Health Care | Nov 9, 2009 12:41:15 PM
The problem lies in your question-- and it has been answered. "Criminalize" means to make (an action or activity) criminal or to treat (a person) as a criminal. What will be "criminalized" possibly, is "willfully refusing" to pay the tax if you choose to forego insurance. You have a choice-- tax or insurance. You're not forced into a system or criminalized for choosing to be taxed. There are also several exemptions based on income.
Also see my previous response:
"Actually, the bill does not impose criminal penalties or steep on people merely for failing to purchase health insurance; rather, people who do not buy health insurance AND also willfully refuse to pay the tax imposed on them for such actions can face civil or criminal penalties."

Obama is hilarious.
This House-approved bill is a HUGE gift to the big health insurance companies, and it has Obama's blessing.
This is a standard Obama trick: he accuses someone else of doing exactly what he is doing (but hopes we won't notice).
Obama is a fraud.

To label seniors, or others, who attend these tea party rallies simply because most are afraid of losing what little they already have as "anti-government people" is more than just discomforting it is frightening..Last time I checked, we still have the right of assembly without government harassment or intrusion..Democrat or Republican or other, if you are not the least bit uncomfortable with this type of rhetoric, I seriously question your comments as an American citizen...As we will not always have a liberal Dem in office...

“Does anybody think that the teabag, anti-government people are going to support them if they bring down health care? All it will do is confuse and dispirit” Democratic voters “and it will encourage the extremists.”
