Obama to Veterans: "America will not let you down"
November 11, 2009 12:26 PM
ABC News' Sunlen Miller reports:
In a place which President Obama said it would be "impossible" not to be moved by sacrifice, Mr. and Mrs. Obama today marked Veterans Day at Arlington National Cemetery.
The President noted that just yesterday he visited with troops at Fort Hood and paid tribute to those who the nation recently lost as well as the lives led of those killed.
"There was something that I saw in them, something that I see in the eyes of every soldier and sailor, airman, Marine and Coastguardsman that I have had the privilege to meet in this country and around the world, and that thing is determination. In this time of war, we gather here, mindful that the generations serving today already deserves a place alongside previous generations for the courage they have shown and the sacrifices that they have made. In an era where so many acted only in pursuit of narrow self- interests, they've chosen the opposite. They chose to serve the cause that is greater than self, many even after they knew they'd be sent into harm's way."
The President said that while today is called a holiday – it has a different meaning for so many.
"For many veterans, it's another day of memories that drive them to live their lives each day as best as they possibly can. For our troops, it is another day in harm's way. For their families, it is another day to feel the absence of a loved one and the concern for their safety. For our wounded warriors, it is another day of slow and arduous recovery. And in this national cemetery, it is another day when grief remains fresh."
While it’s important to mark this day, the President said, it is "far more important" to keep the promises made to vets and noted that this is a promise the nation has not always upheld, singling out the treatment of Vietnam veterans.
"If we're honest with ourselves, we will admit there have been times where we, as a nation, have betrayed that sacred trust. Our Vietnam veterans served with great honor, and they often came home greeted not with gratitude or support but with condemnation and neglect. That's something that will never happen again."
The President said it is never too late to say "thank you" for their service. Mr. Obama thanked the Vice President’s son, Beau Biden for his service, as he just got back from Iraq.
"Our servicemen and women have been doing right by America for generations and, as long as I am commander in chief, America is going to do right by them. And that is my message to all veterans today," President Obama said, "America will not let you down. We will take care of our own."
The President said that the nation fights "in hopes of a day when we no longer need to," and during today’s "solemn remembrances" and "reminders of war," the nation also recommits "to the hard work of peace."
"There will be a day before long when this generation of servicemen and -women step out of uniform. They will build families and lives of their own. God willing, they will grow old, and someday their children and their children's children will gather here to honor them."
Beforehand the President laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns. Mr. and Mrs. Obama also hosted a Veterans Day breakfast at the White House this morning, with veterans of all era. A POW/MIA flag flies over the White House, in addition to the American flag, today.

Candyman..ditto..I agree..I was in train station watching Obama on CNN my heart broke, especially when he was giving shout outs. How could he be so disconnected from the tragedy. And what are those
soldiers thinking when no word about help...And all the news stations are praising him. Did I miss something?

He has proven over and over that he cares nothing for our troops.

Are you talking about how (among other things) Obama's administration has put in place the largest percent increase in the Veterans Administration budget in 30 years?

I want to take this opportunity to thank all our Vets for having served our Great Nation. As a disabled Vet, I know how the American people care for our fighting men and women. I am not worried about the American People letting down our troops. But I do worry about Obama letting them down. He has proven over and over that he cares nothing for our troops. He refused to go to the Heros Ball because he thought it more important to attend a Hollywood ball with his supporters. OBAMA IS THE FIRST PRESIDENT TO EVER MISS THE HEROS BALL! He loves making World Apology Tours, making America a laughing stock! He said the police acted "stupidly" when they arrested his Professor supporter but tells America not to "over react" to the Ft Hood Massacre that was clearly a Terrorist Act committed by a Muslim!
No, America will not let our troops down, but Obama has and will let them down!

The general has made his recommendations. I understand what he is saying. Odd that my post isn't here but your response to it is.
Am I the only one here who would like Jake to set this comment section up like the other ones on ABC so one doesn't have to read from the bottom of the page to the top?

tanarg Said: "what do you expect him to say publicly?"

LOL....of course, some would be more apt to examine where this was said, and never even bother to look at the context of what was said.
Some key words from what GEN Petraeus said "may" help you to understand the difficulty of Afghanistan:
"A refinement of objectives"
"Various Courses of Action"
The "civilian component" (you don't fix Afghanistan without the "nation building" effort, led by the State Department).
Too hard for you to comprehend?

Obama's message at Fort Hood was the most scripted wording of any politican, that I have ever seen. That was not any compassion in his voice. Obama could have been a robut. This man is totally incompassionate with our military. The military that makes his family safe. How could any President with a brain take this long for a decision to send more troops and place our troops in danger. SEND MORE TROOPS OR BRING OUR TROOPS HOME. I hope, that this President does not receive a phone call at 3:00 in the morning, that we are being attacked. God help us.

LOL... as 2-time veteran to Iraq (2003 to 2004 and 2008 to 2009)......and still serving.... I'm EXTREMELY ELATED that this President is taking his time to think about the overall strategy before just applying the "simplistic and brainless" method of the previous Commander-In-Chief (Bush), i.e., "just send more troops". Oh yeah, Bush was the same guy that said, "mission accomplished" a little too soon also.
There is more to winning this war than just the military solution. Joeray, suggest you look up the acronym, "DIME", in regards to National Strategy and Policy. To win in Afghanistan is going to take a new approach (as the 8 years we've been there have proven)...and the method of just feeding more soldiers/marines into the problem is not the sole solution.
Today, General Petraeus was asked this question: "Do you think this process has just taken too long?"
GENERAL PETRAEUS ANSWER: "Actually, I think the process has been very productive and very useful. I think there's been a degree of discussion and debate, indeed, that has been excellent. There has been a refinement of objectives, there's been discussion of various courses of action, there have been explanations and discussions about how the civilian component of this will complement what is done by the work of our military troops. All in all, I think this has been a very productive couple of months that we have spent on this."
Thank God we have a "thinking" Commander-In-Chief now....Now, "THAT'S LEADERSHIP"!

Take your time Mr. President, the lives of our Soldiers depend on your decision, and THAT'S no small task. Please not have an "open-ended" war, lasting decades with thousands of lost lives, and TRILLIONS wasted on Afganistan that is controlled by Drug Kingpins that are funding our enemies.

Chuck A.....well said. I couldn't help but think while Senator Coburn of OK. was standing there in a photo shot with veterans..that he voted against healthcare access for injured veterans. This is how the republicans operates...uses these American Heros when it's in THEIR interest. 14,000 Soldiers die each year from lack of healthcare, and scores of them are Homeless. This is how they have been treated for the last 8 years by an inept administration, that concoctioned a "make-believe" enemy for them to fight. Yet, at every opportunity to "use" them, they take. Wake up America

No more apologies!!! Are you going to apologize to France and Italy and England and the Netherlands for liberating them from the facists Nazi regime in WWII?--Listen to your Generals damnit! You should apologize for leaving, not your military, but AMERICA'S MILITARY BEHIND!! Like the old saying goes; IF YOU THINK TOO LONG YOU'RE GOING TO THINK WRONG!!

As a veteran and after serving my country for years to keep them safe, why should we as veterans have to pay for drivers, fishing or hunting license's. should'nt those be a part of our benefits to be able to fish , hunt and drive at no cost to us. I don't think that is asking for much, we should be able to enjoy being home after giving our lives to keep you safe. We earned it.

Why is everyone letting Obama skate on his lies about White House visitors "Ayers" and "Wright" not being the ones he personally knows? Just wondering...

He said this line while referencing how Viet Nam veterans were treated when they returned home.

When i drove across country in 2001-2002, I met homeless Vietnam vets - some living out of vans and doing the best they could with their amputations and their damaged psyches.
It's no joke. "It's never too late to thank a veteran."

Obama: "It's never too late to thank a veteran."
Shame on you if you're late to the party. Some of us have been thanking veterans our whole life. Some of us are from military families and the idea of thanking a veteran comes naturally. He said this line while referencing how Viet Nam veterans were treated when they returned home. Not everyone disrespected our vets back then, just the radicals. Where are those radicals now?

@Joeray: "As a Veteran myself I will never trust this so called President. He is all BS"
Well, there you go. Thank you for your service. As a Vet myself (U.S. Air Force, Air National Guard) I trust this president far more than the last one. This one is deeply thoughtful and strategic about the solemn duty -- his duty, not the Generals -- of sending men and women into the line of fire. No, "Bring it on!" from this president.
The array of military and political (Republican and Democratic) experts advising President Obama to take his time and get Afghanistan right is far more experienced, savvy and knowledgeable than the screeches that populate the right-wing noise machine berating him for not throwing bodies at the problem without a plan or strategy.
I hope you don't mind, but I'll trust the experts.

@sandra: "This man hates the US as evidenced by his statements regarding all he ever does is apologize for America."
You're confused. It's understandable. He is not apologizing for America. What he is apologizing for is the right-wing, war-mongering, chicken-hawk, neo-con version of America. The one that has been the face the U.S. presented to the world for the past 8 years. The bully... The cowboy... The lone wolf... The climate change denier... The liar... The torturer... The Imperial America.
Big difference, Sandra. Many of us who love America dearly recognize that we have a lot for which to apologize.

This man hates the US as evidenced by his statements regarding all he ever does is apologize for America. In addition, his statements defending Rev Wright's sermons denouncing America at every opportunity he can where he spent 20 years supporting him. It was a disgrace for him to even attend this event. Didnt Michelle even denounce America during the campain? Maybe that is why she and Mrs Biden were joking and laughing during the memorial.

Chuck A... all I have to say is this quote from the bible:
"Forgive them father, they know not what they do." ...in the case of the right-whiners, you can add to this..."say", "write", and "think"...LOL...unless, of course, they saw it on "Beck"
...hehehehe.
