President Obama Attempts Reassurance on Ft. Hood Shootings, Unemployment

November 06, 2009 12:30 PM

On a chilly morning, President Obama came to the Rose Garden Friday morning to try to offer reassurance in the wake of both the Fort Hood shootings and dismal economic news, suggesting -- regarding the latter issue -- that he was considering even more economic stimulus measures.

Offering what he called an “update” on the Fort Hood tragedy, the president said he met with FBI Director Robert Mueller as well as the leaders of relevant agencies “to discuss their ongoing investigation into what caused one individual to turn his gun on fellow servicemen and -women.  We don't know all the answers yet, and I would caution against jumping to conclusions until we have all the facts.”

The president then mentioned the "families, friends and an entire  nation grieving right now for the valiant men and women who came under attack yesterday in one of the worst mass shootings ever to take place on an American military base."

He announced that from this morning until Veterans Day, the flags at the White House and other federal buildings will be flown at half-staff, what he called "a modest tribute to those who lost their lives even as many were preparing to risk their lives for their country, and it's also a recognition of the men and women who put their lives on the line every day to protect our safety and uphold our  values."

The president said, "we honor their service, we stand in awe of their sacrifice, and we pray for the safety of those who fight and for the families of  those who have fallen."

Turning to this morning's news that unemployment has risen to 10.2%, the president also announced that he signed into law a bill that he said "will help grow our economy, save and create new jobs, and provide relief to struggling families and businesses," the need for which was "made clear by the jobs report that we received this morning."

The bill, he said, "extends unemployment benefits for up to 20 additional weeks, with the longest extension for the  hardest-hit states."

The money won't "just put money into the people's pockets who are receiving the benefits," he said. "Economists tell us that when these benefits are spent on food or clothing or rent, it actually strengthens our economy and  creates new jobs."

The bill will also cut taxes for struggling businesses and extend the tax credit for all homebuyers through April of next year.

The president said that he was considering further stimulus measures, with his economic team "looking at ideas such as additional investments in our aging  roads and bridges, incentives to encourage families and businesses to  make buildings more energy efficient, additional tax cuts for businesses to create jobs, additional steps to increase the flow of credit to small businesses, and an aggressive agenda to promote exports and help American manufacturers sell their products around the world."

The president made sure to underline that "we lost fewer jobs than we did last month," and said when he first came to office his goal "was to stop the free-fall that caused our economy to shrink at an alarming rate. We've succeeded in achieving that goal, as our economy grew last quarter for the first time in a year.  But history tells us that job growth always lags behind economic growth, which is why we have to  continue to pursue measures that will create new jobs."

The president promised "that I won't let up until the Americans who want to find  work can find work, and until all Americans can earn enough to raise  their families and keep their businesses open."

GWB sucked, yes. But when he talked about the troops, you could tell it was heartfelt despite his crappy public speaking.

In addressing the tragedy at Ft. Hood, he first freaking thing out of President Obama's mouth was "don't jump to conclusions". Shouldn't he have mentioned the fallen and their families first? It seems like Obama is more worried about the shooter than those that were murdered.

Then, when he did talk about the troops, he seemed impassionate and insincere, coldly reading the prompter.

I hate to think this about the CIC, but it seems like he really could give a crap about the troops.

Absolutely disgusting.

You say that Obama is now going to roll out his Afgan stategy the week of Nov. 16th. Why not wait until Dec. 16th, or maybe Nov. 16th of next year? What is the rush? It's not like men are dying over there or anything. This Afghan strategy should have been in place months ago. McCrystal made his troop request back in August...

Actually, much of this is a canard or a misunderstanding on the part of the people who parrot it from what I understand based on chats with folks more knowledgeable and experienced on this topic than moi. If Obama had made a decision in September, four weeks, two weeks ago, yesterday or in a couple weeks, the result was likely always going to be that troops started arriving when the harsh Afghan winter was over. Moreover, McCrystal's request for was for troops over the course of the next year-- not the past 90 days or the next 120 days. So far, President Obama's timeline is perfectly in keeping with the amount of time other presidents have taken to review policy and choose a strategy, and perfectly in keeping with my expectations. (In my head I was always thinking we'd know by Thanksgiving.) Requests for troops sat on the previous admin's desk for much longer.

Stephen Metz has a good story in TNR called The Hurry Up Offense. It's a couple weeks old but check it out.

Let's raise taxes to stimulate the economy!

New CBO estismates out today:

Senator Gregg: Updated CBO Estimate of House Bill Pulls Back the Curtain on Majority’s Intent to Grow Government by $3 Trillion

Senator Judd Gregg (R-NH), ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee today commented on the Congressional Budget Office’s (CBO) more detailed cost estimate of the manager’s amendment to the House health reform bill.

Senator Gregg stated, “The CBO estimate released last night finally sheds light on the smoke and mirrors game the majority has been playing with the cost of their health care reform proposal. Over the first 10 years, this legislation builds in gross new spending of $1.7 trillion – and most of the new spending doesn’t even start until 2014. Once that spending is fully phased in, the House Democratic bill rings up at more than $3 trillion over ten years.

“Additionally, this bill cuts critical Medicare and Medicaid funding by $628 billion, accounts for nearly $1.2 trillion in tax and fee increases and will explode the scope of government by putting the nation’s health care system in the hands of Washington bureaucrats. The $3 trillion price tag defies common sense – we simply cannot add all this new spending to the government rolls and claim to control the deficit

So what does Odumba think is encouraging economically? The rapidly rising unemployment? The massive loss of wealth in this country? The best encouragement he could give me is simply shutting the crap up!

Economists tell us that unemployment benefits improve the economy and create jobs? Fabulous. Why don't we all go on unemployment and really get the economy cooking? Then we can all go out and get one of the new jobs we've created.

Despite some of the very cynical comments on here, I noticed that the President devoted his weekly address to the horrible shootings at Ft. Hood, and to the military and veterans.

That's right Obama, just keep negotiating with our enemies. While the thought might be nice, what an idiot the president is. I guess he thinks he can change human nature. I so dislike this man and everything he is.

"I'm not sure why the remark about not jumping to conclusions by the President is so much more grating to some than similar remarks by those in the military."

It is a euphemism which assumes the listener isn't capable of "correct" thought and is therefore patronizing and offensive. The source of the remark makes a big difference.

bobc;
"I saw more passion in Obama's words when he speaks to the SEIU and ACORN, than he did about our fallen soldiers in Ft. Hood!"

Fired up, ready to go!

mmm mmm mmm

Alyson, you say that Obama is now going to roll out his Afgan stategy the week of Nov. 16th. Why not wait until Dec. 16th, or maybe Nov. 16th of next year? What is the rush? It's not like men are dying over there or anything. This Afgan strategy should have been in place months ago. McCrystal made his troop request back in August, and Obama has been dithering about what to do ever since. This man couldn't make a decision to save his life. But it's not his life that is on the line in Afghanistan now is it?

Despite some of the very cynical comments on here, I noticed that the President devoted his weekly address to the horrible shootings at Ft. Hood, and to the military and veterans.

It's unclear to me whether the shooter is still in a coma, but the investigation continues and I'm not sure why the remark about not jumping to conclusions by the President is so much more grating to some than similar remarks by those in the military.

Images from the candlelight vigil last night really touched my heart and soul, and I continue to pray for those injured and those who lost loved ones. So senseless.

Meanwhile, I read at the Cable blog at Foreign Policy Mag's site, that all signs point increasingly toward the conclusion that the administration is wrapping up its Afghanistan strategy review and planning a rollout the end of the week beginning November 16, immediately after President Obama and other top officials return from Asia.

"Reliable sources tell The Cable that the review has entered its final stages, with Defense Secretary Robert Gates and National Security Advisor Jim Jones now taking the lead and putting on the final touches."

To read the post you can google "Afghan strategy rollout imminent."

Pres. Obama and the mainstream media should point out that the Ft Hood incident is just a copy of the London massacre several years earlier, which was carried out by a group of native born Muslim terrorists. In the latter case, the British prime minister Tony Blair had immediately paid visit to their Muslim neighborhood and warned them to have tighter control of their kids. Obama needs to do more besides ordering flag lowered. I think the mainstream media here is wrong in giving too much sympathy to the murderer by stating he was harassed by others and he was against the war in mid east.

Why does anybody care what this clown says anymore? Everything out of his mouth is either a lie or political spin. I personally can't stand to look at him.

Just check out CNN.
You will see a lot of excuse making for the killer.
It is fascinating how left wingers are quick to defend a killer such as this, but bash GWBush who kept us safe from these same type killers.
And the dems wonder why independents and conservatives think they are not on our side.

Five more banks failed yesterday (120 total this year). Thank goodness this recession is over. Whew!

Posted by: Chuck | Nov 7, 2009 8:49:51 AM

For a minute I thought he was going to blame George Bush for the Fort Hood incident - Bush lives in Texas, failed Bush policies, 8 years of more of the same, Bush started the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, Change we can believe in, torture technique and all the rest of it.

At least he didn't blame Bush.
_________

My bet is that the conversation is not over about Ft. Hood. Maybe not from the President but from the left. Somewhere in the insanity that resulted in this senseless shooting there is a connection between something we did as a nation and what led this goofball to committing this horrific crime.

Or, better yet, maybe there is a conspiracy in there someplace? Then they can tie Cheney and maybe even Rumsfeld to this too.

tierra - Just because we're critical of the moron we have in the White House today, that doesn't make us right "wing."

It's just that 90% of America stands somewhere to the "right" of Obama... he's so far left, he's sitting in the nose bleed section, right next to Pelosi.

Obama says "We don't know all the answers yet, and I would caution against jumping to conclusions until we have all the facts.”

Gee.... that didn't stop you with your good buddy, Gates.
