The Presidential Planner

November 12, 2009 7:00 AM

Abc_sunlen_miller_090309_mn From Sunlen Miller:

President Obama today will make his first trip to Asia as president, departing this morning for a four-country, weeklong tour of Japan, Singapore, China and South Korea.  Mr. Obama is leaving for his trip one day later than scheduled so he could attend the memorial service at Ft. Hood on Tuesday and hold a meeting with his national security team on Wednesday. More from ABC’s Karen Travers and Yunji de Nies here.

Before he leaves, the president will make a short statement about the economy in the Diplomatic Room.

En route to Tokyo, Air Force One will make a few hour stop in Anchorage, Alaska. The president will meet with troops and give a short speech at Elmendorf Air Force base.

The president’s visit to Alaska has been a long time coming.

During the campaign he’d often joke that the one state that he hadn’t visited was Alaska, pausing for the imminent chuckles from the audience no doubt in reference to the former governor of Alaska and 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin.

Just last week, the president joked that he intended to visit Alaska, but because of  Alaska’s chilly climate, he said he would prefer to visit during the summer months.

“The only thing I do want to make sure you understand is when I do visit Alaska, it's going to be during the summer,” Obama joked at the Tribal Nations Conference last Thursday, “So I just wanted to be clear about that. Sorry, I'm getting old.”

The Hawaiian-born president might have a rude awakening today – the weather forecast in Anchorage predicts a high of 24 degrees.

From Alaska, Air Force One will fly overnight to Tokyo, Japan.

If Bush had been only this smart we
would not be where we are today.
President Obama is truly doing right by
our military and I could not be prouder
of our President.
Bush and Cheney never cared.
By the way the right wingers have always been insane.

Former Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara's comment on the bombing was this: (General Curtis) LeMay said that "If we'd lost the war, we'd all have been prosecuted as war criminals." "And I think he's right," says McNamara. "He, and I'd say I, were behaving as war criminals." . . . "

I was always struck by the weirdness of LeMay's horror at the atomic bombings.

I say that because LeMay had convinced command that he could defeat Japan through massive aerial bombing including fire bombings which devastated Japan's largely wooden constructed cities.

And that Senate thing? "Present! I'd like to be a Senator but I've got to start running for President in a couple of weeks, so see ya!""

US Senators can;t vote present.

The "present" vote in IL legislature counts as a no vote and is used by both parties to express their dissatisfaction with a bill.

Out of perhaps 4500, Obama cast about 130 present votes.

But beyond that common right wing lie.

Let's get into Visualize peas insane argument that Obama should have been developing an Afghanistan plan before he ran for President, heck before he ran for Senator.

By that logic George Bush should have been fully prepared to take on terrorism and Osama Bin Laden and there is no way we should have been caught by surprise on 9/11

Right Visualize peas?

He was probably too busy to follow the news and keep up with current events.

"Current events" is not the high-level military briefings required to put together a major, comprehensive strategy.

Much as you seem to think knowledge of current events might mke you an expert, that speaks more of your own shortcomings and lack of understanding - verging on an ignorance and foolishness close to insanity.

Insane might be very appropriate terminology.

Right winger now demands to know why Obama had not created a military plan for Afghanistan before he became a Senator suggesting that he could do so based on public info that anyone had access to.

The right wing is insane.

Yea, you're right. He was probably too busy to follow the news and keep up with current events. I'm sure Rezko and Wright filled him in during their quiet times.

And that Senate thing? "Present! I'd like to be a Senator but I've got to start running for President in a couple of weeks, so see ya!"

Then ten months of enjoying the good life, finally getting around to thinking about the war and liberals say, "Hey! Give 'em a break! He's only had a couple of weeks to work on this!"

Yup. Insane alright...

Time to head over to Japan & apologize for ww2

Did you know that before the two atomic bombs were dropped on civilian cities, the United States fire bombed 67 cities in Japan - cities the size of Cleveland, Miami, Baltimore, Fort Worth . .. 67 cities mostly with wood construction?

Typically at least 1/4 of the city (often well over 50%) was destroyed. This literally burned to death hundreds of thousands of civilians.

We're talking about the intentional burning to death of hundreds of thousands of civilians.

Former Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara's comment on the bombing was this: (General Curtis) LeMay said that "If we'd lost the war, we'd all have been prosecuted as war criminals." "And I think he's right," says McNamara. "He, and I'd say I, were behaving as war criminals." . . . "

I know, it's old history - 2nd world war - but is part of the history of the United States.

"Don't they see the problems they have caused in the country and the manufacturing sector?"

Yeah the unions decided to manufacture off shore using child and practical slave labor.

But as Americans we enjoy our cheap goods so its our fault as much as anything.

How quickly they forget! It was the former President George W Bush who almost bankrupt this country. Funny how no one said anything then. Now someone comes in to TRY and clean up the mess he left behind, and you're all over it. You all should feel ashamed of yourselves.

PS: I am a lifelong Republican. One of the few in the GOP who didn't drink the Kool Aid.

Nice job. You certainly sound like a lot of what I read on here-- the same old predictable stuff.

I'd wish you luck on getting the part-- since you add as much to the debate as the rest-- but eeeeew, do you really want to be an astroturf teabot? really?

(wink)

Thirty-eight percent (38%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -9. Thirty-three percent (33%) now say the U.S. is generally heading in the right direction .

Thirty-nine percent (39%) say the President is doing a good or excellent job handling the economy while 45% give him poor marks. On national security issues, the numbers are 42% good or excellent and 39% poor.

Didn't see that one coming. I predicted that he would make his announcement about Afghanistan on the way to Air Force One but never thought his decision would be to reject all options.

For those applauding and urging the President to take his time and get all the information in order to get it right, consider how much time and information the President has ACTUALLY had:

1) Access to the same public information as you and I since we entered Afghanistan
2) Time to run for the Senate and win
3) Time to be a U.S. Senator and most likely had access to more detailed information about Afghanistan
3) Time to campaign for the Presidency and win
4) Time for his transition period and to be proclaimed the most prepared President ever by the media
5) Over a year since winning the election to formulate a plan for Afghanistan
6) Since taking the oath of office, complete access to everything
7) 10 months as acting President

How much more time and input does he need? He has had time to do everything else - which has been well documented over the past 10 months - and we are to believe the war in Afghanistan - the necessary war - and the protection of our brave soldiers is a priority for him?

Obama has turned us into the country that borrows money but cannot be trusted to pay it back.

Like that friend that always bums money saying he'll pay it back later.
And you aren't sure if he's good for it.

That's the new image of America thanks to Obama.
Broken economically with massive debt.

And weak indecisive government more worried about being politically correct than keeping us safe.

Posted by: tyler | Nov 12, 2009 9:30:46 AM

Another apology tour?
It's been awhile. Obama had to build America up in Copenhagen--now it's time to tear us down.
Whatever serves his needs.

Posted by: mick | Nov 12, 2009 9:23:09 AM

Ooops- you left out "and will fail to make a decision about reinforcements to Afghanistan for yet another day, further jeopardizing the lives of the military he hollowly acknowledged in yet another empty speech yesterday."
