Today’s Q's for O's WH – 11/9/2009
November 09, 2009 2:24 PM
TAPPER: If President Obama's having the Sit Room meeting (Wednesday) on Af-Pak…should we then expect that his announcement will come after the Asia trip?GIBBS: I've not been told when it's going to be, but I think it is doubtful that it will happen prior to Thursday.
TAPPER: And is -- would it -- is it conceivable that it would happen during his trip to Asia?
GIBBS: Not likely, I wouldn't think.
TAPPER: OK. The White House reached out specifically to Congressman Cao during the health care negotiations, before the vote and right before the vote. What -- what did the White House tell the congressman?
GIBBS: Well, look, this wasn't -- those conversations didn't happen just this weekend. Nancy-Ann had met with him many weeks ago, obviously, as somebody who was interested in talking about what was in the president's health reform proposals, and obviously made a decision that it was in the best interest of his constituents.
TAPPER: Is there anything that -- in terms of stimulus money going to New Orleans, or is there anything beyond the health care reform bill that the White –
GIBBS: Not that I know of.
TAPPER: And, in terms -- just one other thing on the meeting. Originally, I know, you guys had been for...
GIBBS: Meeting?
TAPPER: I'm sorry -- the announcement about -- about the Af- Pak decision --
GIBBS: OK.
TAPPER: Originally, you guys had been shooting for before the Asia trip, and certainly that was not an official deadline, but you guys had been shooting for that. What's the reason for taking a little bit more time?
GIBBS: Well, I mean, I think the president wants to make sure that, as I've said numerous -- on numerous occasions, take the time necessary to get the decision right. We're -- we're at a pivotal moment, and I think the president wants to ensure that he has all that he needs and has heard from all that have equities in this, in order to make a decision moving forward.
TAPPER: Well, what has -- what could he not have gotten already? I mean, what could he not have already gotten?
GIBBS: Well, suffice it to say, if he'd gotten everything he needed, we probably wouldn't be meeting on Wednesday.
TAPPER: Could you give us an idea, though, of the kind of thing you're talking about?
GIBBS: No.

tierra is blaming Bush for Obama dragging his feet? Of course she is. tierra, Bush left office 1o months ago, you CAN NOT blame him for Obama not making a decision now. How silly you sound. Your blind devotion is scary.

Both Bush and Cheney can certainly still be blamed for ignoring Afghanistan for 7 years while the Taliban and al Qaeda regrouped.
Allowing the Taliban and al Qaeda to regroup has had terrible consequences for our troops - and for the people of Afghanistan.

Worth reminding the Obama demonizers on here . . .
It was Bush and Cheney who put Afghanistan on the back burner and let it simmer for 7 years while the Taliban and al Qaeda regrouped and became strong enough to AGAIN be a threat against our soldiers and the people of Afghanistan.
Oh course, none of the right wingers cares about that piece of history - it's very inconvenient to their attempts to try to smear the President.

shouldn't the president of the united states be able to make a decision in a short amount of time? he has all the information he needs and he has all the people he needs to help make the decision. he just can't because he's indecisive! in the meantime, a few soldiers get killed, oh well!
the idea that this is some sort of business or political decision where you want to wait and see, and "let me think about it some more...", is absolutely sickening. Does he not realize this is life or death to many soldiers on the ground??
he's an embarrassment...

McChrystal has requested possible increases in troops that will take place over a long period of time. This is not a 'quick, jump in the water and rescue the swimmer from the sharks' situation - much as it suits the right wing purposes attempting to demean the President.
Have any of you read his report? Or the options he presented?

Ah. Lurking about waiting to pounce on something in the comments. How brave.

what will their excuse be after his trip to asia? He is a sorry excuse for a president. If you ask me he won't send the troops asked for by his hand picked General. Anyone wanna bet the general is replaced by Van Jones.

"We're at a pivotal moment..."
Really? How nice of them to notice that. But what makes THIS pivotal moment any different than any other pivotal moment since the beginning of this war?
Let's put this in context...
Say I'm a lifeguard at the beach. My job is to protect the swimmers and make sure they are not harmed, or worst case scenario, die. So, an innocent swimmer is out there, and suddenly is surrounded by man eating sharks. I need to make a decision ASAP. I KNOW I have the equipment to take out the sharks, and I know I can summon the extra man power to take with me to save this swimmer. The people still on the beach have mixed feelings. Some of them want me to go NOW. Some of them say, ah, let them get eaten by the sharks, they shouldn't have been there anyway. But since I am in charge, and I know my job is to protect and save, my decision will not linger. I get my equipment together, get my extra man power, go out and save the swimmer. Did it matter if the swimmer was one of "choice" or "necessity"? NO. It mattered that I did the job I needed to do.
I would hope and pray Obama can follow this very simple reasoning, and quit dragging his feet. We don't have the time for it.

Hey!
Is there any response from the President, regarding Hugo Chavez accusing Mr. Obama of trying to provoke a war with Venezuela?
So what does it take to make friends with a radical left wing government?
That's Venezuela, not the US!

It's 3 o'clock! It's Thursday. It's December!
"I will support our troops, that are in harms way, with every resource that they need."
It's 2010, please leave your name, number, and a brief message, and I will get back to you after the mid-term elections.
Who would ever accuse the President with being weak on the military, or national security?

Re: Cao and WH contact.
Clearly they have time to talk with Repub who support their radical agenda, but what about the effort by Republicans who have been trying for months to schedule meetings to discuss the HC Bill and related issues. So much for bipartisanship. This is just an example of the partisan nature of this President and his administration.
The real question here is what was the 'bribe' to Cao?

"WhiteHouse Bob" (Gibbsy-poo) strikes again... for a guy who talks a lot, he sure doesn't say a lot.

What drivel from the WH.
When do you see through this smoke screen.
On Afghanistan: It is inexcusable for a CinC to be so out of touch and lack obvious leadership qualities.
We are at war!
Where is his head? Clearly not focused on the right issues!

Hmmm. Thanks for trying, Jake. I liked your questions today (although I know you always say on twitter that you don't read our comments on the blog so I'll tweet ya, too.) Also, nice post on Kelly Clarkson at Newsweek.
