Wave After Wave of Bad News
November 07, 2009 2:50 PM
The White House announced today that on Tuesday the president and first lady will travel to Fort Hood, Texas, for a memorial service.
It’s been a rough week for the country and so it’s been a bad week for the man in charge of running the country. As of Friday, the president had not yet called any of the wounded victims, or any victims’ families, because the notification of next of kin is not complete. But he will go to Texas next week for the memorial ceremony, where he will comfort families and speak. He will do this even if it means delaying his long-planned trip to Asia.
The Fort Hood tragedy is just one of many crises on the president’s plate.
Last night the president was in the Oval Office discussing what happened at Fort Hood with Secretary of Defense Gates, Joint Chiefs chairman Mike Mullen, FBI director Robert Mueller and Homeland Security czar John Brennan. It was an intense discussion about what could have motivated this attack, whether this was an act of domestic terrorism, the morale of the Armed Forces given the fact that a fellow soldier did this, all the possible ramifications.
Then those four advisers left and an aide brought the jobs numbers to the president -- another round of bad news: Unemployment is up to 10.2 percent. If you factor in those discouraged from looking for a job, it's 17.5 percent.
The next day, of course: the shooter in Orlando. Earlier in the week: complications regarding the elections in Afghanistan. For Democrats on Tuesday, two big gubernatorial losses in New Jersey and Virginia.
One White House official compared it to standing on the beach with wave after wave of bad news coming in.
There is growing recognition in the White House that the stimulus package wasn’t enough. The White House is considering further stimulus measures -- a combination of more infrastructure investments, more money to weatherize homes and businesses, more tax cuts for businesses, and/or more steps to promote lending. This will be a matter of weeks not months. They know they have got to turn this job cycle around.

Hey Tapper, why does your colleague Martha Raddatz "wish Hasan's last name was Smith?" I was offended beyond words when she said that. Until she explains that I will never watch your trashy network again. And yes, it is relevant because she is your colleague.
Verbatim quote from ABC's broadcast immediately after the Ft. Hood shootings:
"As for the suspect, Nadal Hasan, as one officer's wife told me, "I wish his name was Smith."
I know a Smith family that lost a son-in-law at Fort Hood in 2004. I hope they never read or hear Raddatz's wishes. I don't believe for a second that an officer's wife would say that just hours after a massacre like that. Raddatz likely masked her own opinion with an uncheckable source. She and ABC sicken me.

Have you not heard that bad news travels in bunches? The press and many American, however seem to have a hard time focusing on more than one thing at a time.

The House approved ObamaCare. Mission Accomplished! Good time for a vacation to Asia, where Obama will suck up to the murderous regime in Burma. Senator Jim Webb paved the way with his own glorious appeasement. Will Barry give a big "Shout-out" to Aung San Suu Kyi??
---President Barack Obama plans to meet with the prime minister of Myanmar along with other Southeast Asian leaders Sunday, in a high-level affirmation of the new policy by Washington of engaging the military-ruled country despite its dismal human rights record.---

The stimulus was not enough??? The money from the last stimulus went to: $300,000 for a GPS equipped helicopter to hunt for radioactive rabbit droppings at the Hanford nuclear reservation in Washington state......$30 million for a spring training baseball complex for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Coloroda Rockies.......$2.3 million for the U.S. Forest Service to rear large numbers of anthropods, including the Asian longhorned beetle, the nun moth and the woolly adelgid......$3.4 million for a 13 foot tunnel for turtles and other wildlife attempting to cross U.S. 27 in Lake Jackson, Fla. ......$9.38 to renovate a train depot in Pa. that has not been used for 3 decades........Our taxpayer dollars wasted on nonsense when our economy and unemployment is the worst it has been since 1983. NO MORE TAXPAYER DOLLARS WASTE.

Its too early for speaker Pelosi, a person with high taste of self celebration, to announce " I am going to Disney ..." or preferably " Let take a big air force jet to fly to my motherland Italy for a great state visit" as she did at the beginning of the year when finishing writing her version stimulus spending bill.

"Regardless of the old adage; knowledge and experience of the chef are two of the best ingredients for a 'good stew'"
That adage is almost as well known as the old saying "A dirty cook in a clean kitchen will be paid in crowns for soiling his apron baking humble pie for the loyal courtiers of a horseless kingdom."

Regardless of the old adage; knowledge and experience of the chef are two of the best ingredients for a "good stew"; the American voters prefer somebody "sexy", young and glib. Now it's time to pay for dinner and the entertainment...

Amazing how the press and half the country have gone from "everything is the president's fault to nothing is the president's fault and excuses" in less than a year. I guess it helps to be a thin skinned whiner, although not very dignified.

His handling of the Fort Hood shootings has been insensitive and inept, at best. His "comfort" won't be worth a bucket of warm spit.

No question this week has been a beating for this country. Seems to me that a big part of this is the direct result of policy decisions made in haste and in most cases slammed through Congress because, well, they can be right now. Our system of government is designed to move slowly so that the full ramifications of our direction can be scrutinized and debated before setting on a course.
Most notable among the slam-Bills is the Stimulus Bill. Forget the promise of transparency this Bill was written by Pelosi and Reid and slammed through Congress because they could slam it through. Obama approved it and signed off on it - he owns this Bill and he owns the results. It was and is a spending Bill and the bulk of the spending is for projects that simply does not stimulate the economy.
That said, Obama owns the results regardless where they go. Obviously, he does not own the tragedy at Fort Hood - that was the actions of a mad man and I am glad he is going there, as the Commander In Chief and as the leader of this nation to engage in the great sorrow this nation feels as a result.Even on the best of weeks the shootings at Ft Hood would put a cloud over everything. The President is saddened like everyone else and rightly so.
But he owns the 10.2% unemployment. He owns the state of the art of this economy in general. And, if unemployment goes up higher, he owns that as well (and it will). He is all focused on this Health Bill and, no question, reform is needed. But, just like everything else this President does he runs off half cocked and starts spending money and then deceives us into thinking there will be great results. We are paying for his slam-bamming ways and it is my guess this is the beginning of a series of bad weeks and months.

Any Islamic community within the US (or outside of the US) expressed their shock and outrage at the gunman's killing of US soldiers while shouting "Allahu Akbar!"?
