White House: No Af-Pak Announcement Likely Until After President Returns from Asia
November 09, 2009 2:57 PM
Though the White House had been shooting for the president to make an announcement about his new strategy in Afghanistan and Pakistan between November 7, which was to have been the date of the Afghan run-off election, and November 11, when the president was to have departed for his trip to Japan, China, Singapore, and South Korea, that window now appear to be all but closed.
After the President asked Pentagon officials for some additional strategic options and information a couple weeks ago, it became less certain that he would make the window. The cancelation of the Afghan run-off election likely didn't help matters, as it made President Karzai and even more obviously less credible partner.
Now the Fort Hood memorial scheduled for this week has pushed a War Council meeting in the White House Situation Room to Wednesday.
White House press secretary Robert Gibbs says it’s unlikely that the President will announce his strategy before or during his trip to Asia.
The president wants to make sure that he takes "the time necessary to get the decision right," Gibbs said today. "We're at a pivotal moment, and I think the president wants to ensure that he has all that he needs and has heard from all that have equities in this, in order to make a decision moving forward."
The president returns to Washington, DC, on November 19.

Yes, President Bush could have increased the size of the force under U.S. command.

And he didn't.

Yes, President Bush could have increased the size of the force under U.S. command. But if the force under NATO command had been a full fighting force, they could have prevented the Taliban and al Qaeda from regrouping within Afghanistan.

Some NATO countries refuse to fight and are acting only as peacekeeping forces. THAT is what led to the regrouping of the Taliban and al Qaeda in Afghanistan.

Nonsense, Bush and Cheney had the option of increasing the troops and the effort in Afghanistan same as the current President does.
They didn't.
Allowing the Taliban and al Qaeda to regroup has had terrible consequences for our troops - and for the people of Afghanistan.

My apologies to the NATO peacekeeping forces in Afghanistan. I should have said: "...to do the job that many NATO troops are prohibitied from doing."

"It was Bush and Cheney who put Afghanistan on the back burner and let it simmer for 7 years while the Taliban and al Qaeda regrouped and became strong enough to AGAIN be a threat against our soldiers and the people of Afghanistan."
Tierra, you are either not aware or simply conveniently neglect to mention that NATO controlled portions of Afghanistan until October 5, 2006 when it took over eastern Afghanistan from the U.S.-led forces and extended its role to the entire country. Some NATO countries refuse to fight and are acting only as peacekeeping forces. THAT is what led to the regrouping of the Taliban and al Qaeda in Afghanistan.
In addition to the several thousand American troops under NATO command, we have thousands of troops that operate outside NATO--under U.S. command--who have been tracking al Qaeda, helping train Afghan security forces and performing reconstruction work. This force needs additional troops to fight the Taliban and al Qaeda--to do the job that many NATO troops refuse to do.

You may think it's a joke, but for our troops it is not a joke . ..

"Where are his staunch defenders?
The silence is deafening?"
We'll let that right-wing sage and oracle George Will defend Obama. He has repeatedly stated that careful deliberation is completely warranted in this case. You aren't going to kick him out of the party next are you?

Oh that evil Obama - trying to help people in the military again establishing a Council on Veterans Employment that will be chaired by the Secretaries of Labor and Veterans Affairs AND a Veterans Employment Program office within most Federal agencies. Next thing you know, he'll be going to Ft. Hood, or overseeing the arrival of the coffins of fallen soldiers, or visiting the wounded at Walter Reed, or making it easier for the veterans department to lay out their budget a year ahead and organize better, or attempting to better fund health care for military veterans. I tell you the man is evil.
And it's worth reminding the Obama demonizers on here . . .
It was Bush and Cheney who put Afghanistan on the back burner and let it simmer for 7 years while the Taliban and al Qaeda regrouped and became strong enough to AGAIN be a threat against our soldiers and the people of Afghanistan.
Oh course, none of the right wingers cares about that piece of history - it's very inconvenient to their attempts to try to smear the President.

While our men continue to die, this poor sap has become a caricature of drift and indecision. Pathetic and terribly sad.

Dithering on the economy, dithering on Afghanistan, dithering on Fort Hood...
Do you know what rhymes with dithering? Blithering! The two things President Obama is good at rhyme! Now that it cosmic convergence.
