First Lady’s Surprise Birthday Bash

ABC News' Jeunée Simon reports:

Though the first lady’s birthday is today, a private birthday celebration was held for Mrs. Obama on Saturday evening. While rumors about the Obamas’ destination for said festivity swirled amongst the reporters on scene; it turned out the pool weren’t the only ones in the dark. When the motorcade arrived at its destination both the pool and the first lady were surprised—literally.

Friends of the Obamas gathered at a surprise party held at local Dupont Circle establishment, Restaurant Nora, to wish Mrs. Obama a happy early 46th birthday. Nora’s is known for their organic meals and focus on sustainable agriculture. While the menu for the night was kept hush-hush, Nora’s features dishes like homemade gnocchi, Sake Glazed Alaskan Black Cod, and veal with fragrant cashew curry.

Amongst the guests were Mrs. Robinson, the First Lady’s mother, Eric Holder and Elizabeth Alexander, the Inaugural poet. Friends of the Obamas’ from Chicago, Dr. Eric and Cheryl Whitaker, also joined in on the surprise. Last month President Obama notably rushed from a Hawaii golf course when Whitaker’s son sustained a minor injury.

The party lasted about three hours — Mr. and Mrs. Obama said their goodbyes to guests outside of the restaurant and were greeted by a raucous rendition of “Happy Birthday” by a crowd of onlookers that had gathered across the street.

This birthday celebration was drastically different from the way Mrs. Obama celebrated her 45th — aboard a rail car on the Whistle Stop Tour from Philadelphia to Washington, D.C.

To this producer’s knowledge, there were no restaurant crashers.

FLOTUS Fashion Watch: The First Lady was demure in a classic black frock and sleek patterned coat with hints of black, white, and gold.
