Robert Gibbs Mocks Sarah Palin from White House Podium...When Imitation Isn’t Flattery
February 09, 2010 3:10 PM
ABC News’ Karen Travers reports:
It may not have been as dead-on accurate as the Saturday Night Live impression by Tina Fey, but today White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs mocked former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) for seeming to rely on crib notes for a speech last weekend.
Answering a question about the Obama Administration’s stance on health care negotiations with Republicans, Gibbs stopped and looked at his left hand and said coyly, “Oh I wrote a few things down.”
“I wrote ‘eggs, milk and bread,’” Gibbs said. “But I crossed out bread, just so I can make pancakes for [son] Ethan if it snows. And then I wrote down "hope and change," just in case I forgot.”
Gibbs of course was referring to the heat that Palin took on the Internet this week for what appeared to be crib notes on her hand during her address to the Tea Party convention on Saturday night.
Photographs show that written on Palin’s left palm were the words “energy, cut taxes and lift American spirits.”
The word “budget” also was visible but was crossed out.
Palin tried to play it off the following day while campaigning in Texas for Gov. Rick Perry (R) with another message on her hand – “Hi Mom.”
Critics charged Palin with double standards after she poked fun at Obama Saturday for his frequent use of a teleprompter for speeches.
"This is about the people," Palin said Saturday, referring to the Tea Party convention. "This is about the people, and it's bigger than any king or queen of a Tea Party. And it's a lot bigger than any charismatic guy with a teleprompter."
In her address, Palin also questioned Obama’s progress after one year in office. “"Now a year later, I got to ask the supporters of all that, how is that hope-y, change-y stuff working out for you,” she said.

At least Sara Palin isn't using a bunch of "uuhhhs"in her speaches. This man is the worst excuse of a press secretary.I'd a hell of lot rather have Sara Palin looking at her hand and getting the facts right than Gibbs idiocy any day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hear that Gibbs is tweeting now. How appropriate for such an enormous TWIT.

Even when the republicans act like complete hypocrites and make an ass of themselves, their voters will find some way to call the dems "mean spirited" for pointing it out.
Let's review for the slow republican voters. This whole issue is that Palin tried mocking Obama for "using a teleprompter", only to prove that she can't remember even basic concepts like cut taxes and lift spirits. That somehow makes Gibbs "mean spirited", by throwing it back in her face? Honestly, lay off the lead chips.
Posted by: EcoVolunteer | Feb 16, 2010 1:29:08 PM
Thanks Sarah for being who you are. Gibbs mean spiritedness showed a lack of judgement which reflects again on the current level of leadership from the WH. Make a mental list of those they demeaned this year, and add the American electorate and your name to the list. The post adolescent arrogance respects no one. Perhaps Gibbs couldn't think of an issue he disagreed with so he had to get his jollies with this silliness.

I am embarrassed this clown used OUR white house podium to make an ass of himself. He had no business using that podium for this sort of thing. If he wants to go on some sleazy talk show to engage in this banter (although I would still think he him an ass for mocking someone who gave a great one hour speech using only six words to organize her thoughts - while Obama needs a complete teleprompter every time he opens his mouth), that's one thing. But using the White House podium is something quite different.

juvenile.
Mr. Gibbs, you work for the President of the United States. Act like it.
Posted by: jenna | Feb 12, 2010 6:09:25 PM
Well if that aint the pot calling the kettle black.
You boss uses a teleprompter for everything and hes making fun of a few crib notes?
These are professionals? This is juvinile crap you see in high school.

All you need to know about Obama is the man he chose as his press secretary, Rob -errr - Gibbs. If that's the best he can get as a front man, God help America. The most inarticulate putz I have ever seen occupying that role.

I am a 77 year woman, and I;m telling all of you, I'm worried about our great USA. The things all of you consider important are frightening. Who cares about what Sarah Palin or Robert Gibbs comment on about "hands or Teleprompters" Gibbs was trying a little humor, and Sarah is vying attention and money.
Her remark about the teleprompter didn't mean a thing. What worried me was her remark about her thoughts of the two wars we are fighting. Her answer was: "We win," They lose."
Brilliant!! Scary!!. Get serious people, thinks on things that matter.
Posted by: kayv | Feb 11, 2010 6:48:37 PM
Sarah is an "ass clown". I have'nt seen anyone write notes on their hands since elematary school.
The woman is plain STUPID!
Posted by: Kay | Feb 11, 2010 12:48:35 PM
Maybe Gibbs should try it!
It couldn't hurt.
He is the most ignorant,inarticulate,
"bottom feeder" who has ever been
White House Press Secretary.
Gibbs is a Disgrace to the president
he serves and the American People.
He should be fired A.S.A.P!

Are these people really running our country? Gibbs is one of the most unintelligent speakers of our time, to mock anyone shows his lack of depth.
Posted by: Wheatie | Feb 11, 2010 11:15:39 AM
JimVgirl First, I'm not a democrat, I'm an independent. I've voted for candidates from both parties, and I look for a candidate who can see both sides of an issue and who I believe will vote for what is best for our Country, not for their party.
Second, I reread my posts and am saying publicly that I should have worded some things differently. I want to talk the talk and not say things that are not constructive and which do not add to the conversation and put forth constructive ideas. For that I apologize.
None of us wants the debt load that we are carrying. But the truth is, most of that debt was there when this administration came into office on January 20, 2009. The bank/mortgage company fiasco started years ago when the regulations were removed and these companies were allowed free reign to practice risky lending and other poor business practices - and it all came tumbling down around them before the election. This administration didn't create the problem, they inherited it. Yes, the banks (and AIG - which insures our deposits) were bailed out - it was that or they were going to fail - and millions of people would have lost their retirement funds and savings and checking accounts. What would you have done? Bailing out the automobile companies was tougher for me to swallow, except that I realized thousands of good manufacturing jobs were on the line - job that are held by Americans. Not bailing these companies out would have had a snowball effect - parts manufacturers and suppliers, dealerships and their service centers, and any number of other companies would have meant more untold jobs lost.
The stimulus funds were a good idea in principle, but Congress (both sides) got their greedy hands on it and managed to waste at least a portion of it. It was intended to create jobs, which we sorely need. It not only benefits individuals and families, it also helps our government by bringing in additional taxes that we need to pay for the Country's business.
Health care is a sticky subject. There are many rumors about what it does and doesn't do. Hopefully the republicans will add their wealth of knowledge to coming up with a bill that will provide the most benefit to Americans. I'm sure that they have good ideas to contribute and that they can look at what's been put together with fresh eyes and find the shortcomings in the bills. Continuing to vote no will do nothing except let the insurance companies bankrupt all of us.
As for Sarah Palin, I watch a fair amount of tv - I'll admit it's mostly CNN and MSNBC - and I have never heard any of the moderators or their guests say anything untoward ABOUT her children. They have played clips of Glen Beck and Rush Limbaugh saying things that I would have washed my kids' mouths out for. But the moderators I listen to have collectively said that both Beck and Limbaugh had, in so many words, crossed the line. So I'm at a loss as to who you're referring to when you accuse "democrats" of saying despicable things about Sarah Palin's children. I really want to know, so please respond to this. "They" must have names.
As for Sarah Palin herself, you and I will always disagree - so it's probably best to just leave it at that.

The point is Sarah showed she didn't need a teleprompter! She gave a great speech with just a few notes on her hand! She doesn't need to rely on a teleprompter! She also doesn't need to have her entire speech written out before her!

I saw that speach and she looked down at the podium every 3 seconds. Of course she had note cards.
At least the crowd got to look at the same thing the boys who dated her or her daughter did.... THE TOP OF THEIR HEADS!!!
Posted by: dk | Feb 11, 2010 4:47:15 AM
redapplelady No I didn't misinterpret you any more than you misinterpreted my message. I understood you completely but I just don't agree with you! You are wrong! We do want hope and change but we don't want to put our country into so much debt that our decendants will still be paying our debts hundreds of years from now. That is exactly what Obama is doing with his spending. We also don't want the fiasco of a health care reform bill that Obama is trying to force upon us. Our country may need health care reform but not the bill that's being forced on us. We are fighting that tooth and nail because we know that there has to be something better. And about your opinion that we are hate filled. I guess you haven't been paying attention for the past 17 or 18 months. NOBODY has been treated more hatefully than Sarah Palin by you democrats! You democrats have been attacking her like a pack of wolves since the minute John McCain announced her as his running mate! Even her children have been attacked, including her little boy with Downes Syndrome. Her daughter Bristol has been called every filthy name that there is and has been accused of sleeping with just about every man in the world. You can't get more hateful than to attack someone's children! That's is something Sarah Palin has never done. She has never attacked anyone's children!
Posted by: JimVgirl | Feb 11, 2010 3:18:54 AM
JimVGirl - you completely missed the point I was making when I typed "enough said". That was going to be my only post, but I won't let you get away with misinterpreting the point I was making, which was "I can't imagine being as hate-filled as most of you are. And for what? Do you not believe in hope and change? Oh, no, call me wrong. I just got out "Roget's Thesaurus", and #3 under conservative says, "Clinging to obsolete ideas : backward, reactionary, unprogressive. See POLITICS". Enough said." Get it? You chose to mangle my post the same way so many of you mangle or ignore facts - I guess they're just not convenient or conducive to your ideology. What many of you don't understand or even care about is that you are hurting our Nation - The UNITED States of America - your home and mine. Many Democrats are just as guilty. We must work together in order to repair our economy and tackle many other pressing matters that affect the lives of each of our families. Think with a reasoned mind, speak with a civil tongue, and do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

No, redapplelady, it is not enough said! The point is Sarah showed she didn't need a teleprompter! She gave a great speech with just a few notes on her hand! She doesn't need to rely on a teleprompter! She also doesn't need to have her entire speech written out before her!

The more you democrats mock Sarah Palin and the Tea Party, the stronger and more popular they become. Go ahead and mock them! You are mocking them right into the presidency and the white house! Go Sarah!
Posted by: JimVgirl | Feb 11, 2010 12:32:09 AM
For a president's mouth piece to resort to childish mocking instead of bringing something of substance shows how out of touch these people are. Sarah wants the people to know that she intends to keep the promises she makes and realizes how close these issues are to the hearts of the people who are looking to her for real hope and truth. Not a carefully crafted teleprompter snake oil pitch.
Posted by: Rigid Finger | Feb 11, 2010 12:25:44 AM
Palin is an hypocritical oaf. She rakes one person over the coals for using the word retard and then gives Rush Limbaugh a pass, cause he's "different". She scribbled notes on her palm with a marker like some teenager cheating on a test. Reading from a teleprompter or notes is not a bad thing. Most intelligent people that have ever given a speech of any kind, would realize that. Her folksy diatribe is nauseating. She makes the Republican party look foolish, and herself look ignorant and stupid.
Posted by: Bea | Feb 10, 2010 4:37:01 PM
Bea I guess you don't know that politicians routinely use their palms for their notes. Even the democrats, you know, the ones you consider to be smart! The only difference is they get by with it!
Posted by: JimVgirl | Feb 11, 2010 12:23:41 AM
It's funny to hear/read Palin supporters try to defend the use of her hand with "duh... but the president uses a teleprompter."
Yes, he does. But it was Palin that kept driving that point into the ground.
Guess what; all kinds of people use a teleprompter. All kinds of people use notes. It's not a bad thing to use notes.
It is hypocritical, however, that Palin supporters join in her chorus about the ad-hominem approach to Obama's teleprompter, but then use that same point to defend her.
People that live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.
You know, I don't think it would have been as big a deal if Sarah hadn't latched on to Obama's teleprompter as a talking point.
Maybe if she had layed off the teleprompter from the beginning, she would have saved herself the embarassment of having to use her hand for crib notes.
All politicians use notes, queues etc., because it's such a pressure to talk to a mass audience.
Palin's learning this the hard way.
One thing's for sure, Palin will never be able to bring up teleprompters again, for everytime she does, the response will be the same; TALK TO THE HAND, Sarah...
Posted by: Joe_in_CA | Feb 10, 2010 6:59:04 PM
Joe you don't get it! What we Palin supporters admire her for is that she only used a few notes written on her hand for her speech. She didn't even have a written speech and she did great without one and she gave HER OWN speech, not one that someone else wrote for her! Obama doesn't write his own speeches and he doesn't just have a few notes on his teleprompter. His entire speeches are uploaded on the teleprompter for him to read. All he has to do is just stand there and read them! Palin showed that she is quite capable of giving a speech completely on her own without having it on a screen or printed on paper in front of her.

I found Gibbs' mocking of Palin beneath the office of the President of the United States as well as a waste of taxpayer dollars. There are plenty of other issues in this country worthy of discussing.
Posted by: Keith | Feb 10, 2010 8:41:12 PM
I get inscensed when I read comments about Obama's "socialist agenda." Look between the lines, people. Almost all his appointments are those who trained under Bush and even Reagan. Is that socialist? He's bailed out the auto industry and Wall St. Is that socialist? He's ignored your needs and mine. Is that socialist?
All those people who think so are just echoing what someone else had said; they haven't been thinking for themselves.
Get off your duffs, go to the library, and read up on what socialism is. It can't be explained in a small paragraph any more than any other system can be. Try to learn with an open mind. THEN, if you disagree, do it coming from a place of knowledge.
For the record, I started out as an extreme Republican, but slowly, as I saw what was being done under their aegis, I shifted over to the Democracts. And now I'm not happy with them because they don't live up THAT MUCH to the promise of a better future for everyone. The Republicans only promise a better future for the moneymakers. It doesn't trickle down, and the beautiful concept of "less government interference" promises, among other things, less inspection of foods, less improvement of roads, no controls on medicines, and I could go on, but you have to do the thinking.
Their concept of rugged competative individualism sounds wonderful; but it's meaningless.
Posted by: Mike Varady | Feb 10, 2010 7:18:35 PM
Palin would have saved herself a lot of trouble if she would have dropped the teleprompter bit earlier on, swallowed her pride and used a teleprompter.
Let's not forget it was PALIN who lost respect for the president by driving the teleprompter point into the ground.
People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.
I'm sorry, but no matter how hard you try and defend it, using your hand for notes is not professional at all; it makes you look like a re-t-ard. ~Signed, Rahm Emmanuel

OK. If that's the case, why didn't he do that then? He didn't counter anything Palin said ... just poked fun at her public speaking memorization techniques, which for some reason, so many folks are finding hilarious. What you are actually, is that he did not do his job.

If Palin was capable of using a teleprompter, she would. After all, she reads anything and everything that's put in front of her, right? Her notes would have fit on a 3x5 card, which would have been more professional than writing on the palm of her hand like a teenager cheating on a test. Then again, I don't expect any better of her since she quit on Alaska half way through the governership in order to make $ on a book that was written for her and even more $ speaking in front of people who don't seem to know how government works best any better than she does. Read people - find out what life was like for the elderly and disabled before Social Security and Medicare. Do you want to defend our Country yourselves, both in our nation and overseas - without pay and proper equipment? Then slash the military budget. Your ideas of smaller government and little or no regulation will let the fat cats bankrupt us all. This will be my one and only post on this, since I know that you will attack me with your venom. I can't imagine being as hate-filled as most of you are. And for what? Do you not believe in hope and change? Oh, no, call me wrong. I guess they truly fear her, it shows.
Posted by: SFC Hadley | Feb 10, 2010 4:17:33 PM
I honestly don't think Sarah Palin planned this out in any way - I think she wanted to remember some points to make, so she wrote them on her hand b/c nothing else was handy at that moment.
However, the way this whole thing has played out is incredible - Muhammad Ali couldn't have pulled off this "rope a dope" any better. Again, I don't think she planned it this way - but by opening herself up to what appeared to be a litte weakness, Sarah has made her opponents look small and foolish. Again, incredible.
